C. F. M. C., Universidade de Lisboa Alvarus Thomas (fl. 1509), a Portuguese master at the University of Paris at the beginning of the sixteenth century, is still a poorly known historical figure. In his Liber de triplici motu he presented a comprehensive and sophisticated analysis of the theory of proportions and of the science of motion of his time, in the characteristic form of the Calculatory tradition. Besides some interesting criticism of contemporary physical theories, this work is also relevant from the point of view of mathematics since Thomas achieves some surprising results in the study of infinite series. In this paper I summarize the present knowledge on Alvarus Thomas. I collect all biographical information currently available and present very briefly the contents of the Liber de triplici motu adding some observations on its historical context and influence.

    http://www.mark-shea.com/pious_f.html
Pious Fantasy and the Liberty of the Believer Once upon a time, on the Internet, someone from an Eastern Orthodox background posted a little note concerning the Feast of the Holy Innocents. According to this post there is apparently an old Orthodox tradition that the number of those slain by Herod was 14,000a rather steep number for a tiny village like Bethlehem. Someone else then wrote in and asked where the figure of 14,000 came from. In reply, the Orthodox poster said the figure derives from an apocryphal book called the Protoevangelium of James At this point, a somewhat less sympathetic poster chimed into the discussion and commented (concerning the 14,000 figure) that "This is just another pious fantasy propagated by the Church." By this he meant it is one more example of myths and legends pressed down on believers like so many other false Catholic and Orthodox traditions which add to the pure word of God in Scripture. Now I found this complaint odd since the Protoevangelium of James is one of the many early works of Christian imagination which the Church specifically excluded from the pure word of God in Scripture precisely because it was not reflective of apostolic tradition. If the Church is nefariously trying to pollute the Scripture, excluding false writings from its canon is a very peculiar way to go about it. This was made even odder by the fact that, at other times and by other writers I have seen the exact opposite charge leveled against the Church: namely, that the exclusion of this and other fanciful bits of writing was done by an evil authoritarian Church bent on imposing its dogmatic spin on the canon and fearful of the free human imagination at play in the realm of the spiritual.

    http://www.ewtn.com/library/MARY/XAVIER.htm
THE "FAILURE" OF ST. FRANCIS XAVIER—1506-1552 Still more evidence have we of his own deep conviction that he was himself of little worth. By nature highly strung and sanguine, he suffered from strong reactions; endowed with talents and gifts beyond the ordinary, he was weighed down with the littleness of men around him, blocking his way at every turn; a man of broad horizons and boundless ambitions, he seemed forever tempted to depression and despair, and to surrender every task he undertook. The real greatness of the man must surely lie in this, that he did what he did in spite of every discouragement, from without and from within, and that he died with his eyes stretched forward to a yet further horizon, counting all he had so far done as nothing, probably counting it a failure. Again, the University was disappointed with him. It had given him every advantage; it had appointed him to a professorship; it had marked him out for a career which only needed his own energy to lift him up to the highest rank of the new elite of Europe. Yet all the return he made was, in a moment of enthusiasm, to throw it all up at the suggestion of one who had already come to be looked upon with reserve. Surely there was ground for the resentment of the authorities against the intrusion of Inigo Loyola; and their judgment that Francis Xavier was, after all, fickle and light-headed, a dreamer of dreams and unreliable, was not without a basis of good evidence. In Portugal again he found his place. There he had to wait for more than six months until the fleet for the Indies was equipped. The time was spent in the apostolate, the spirit of Bologna revived; prisoners in Goa were evangelized, especially the victims of the Inquisition, and even accompanied to the stake. But his chief labor was among the nobles, those whose lives and example counted for so much that was evil, whose conversion would mean so much for the world they ruled. And with these he succeeded. Such a preacher had never been known at Court before; so great a reform had never before been brought about. It would clearly be a mistake that such a good work should be cut short; king, and people, and clergy clamored that Xavier should be left in Portugal, and another sent to the Indies in his place. It was not for the first time that the report went round concerning him that here was a good man being utterly thrown away.

    By Kevin Brafford
    Knight Foundation Fellow
    Fall semester, 1998

This is an era in sport when actions sadly speak as loudly as words. Athletes routinely disrespect their opponents. Basketball players thump their chests after dunks. Football players celebrate every successful play. Baseball players stand at home plate admiring their home runs. A Ruthian blast, maybe, but a very un-Ruthian attitude. Examples of poor sportsmanship are on the rise. In the United States. The most fervent examples are found in basketball and football, high-profile team sports where attitude is no longer qualified as being either ``good’’ or ``bad.’’ Rather, if a player has ``attitude,’’ he has moxie, a swagger, a vehicle, he’ll tell you, from which to gain respect. In a Nike television commercial that initially aired last winter, a fictitious Fun Patrol, led by Seattle SuperSonics star Gary Payton, wanders up on a group of bored girls playing basketball. They decide to add a little flavor. ``We’re going to try trash-talking, OK?” Payton says to two of the girls. ``Come strong or don’t come at all!’’ one girl yells at the other. ``In your face!” the second girl screams back. The Fun Patrol drives off, accompanied with this voice-over: ``They may not remember the messenger, but they’ll remember the message.’’ That they do. But in case they don’t, reminders are often no further away than the next ESPN SportsCenter:

La historia del exilio republicano español de 1939, ha sido objeto de diversos estudios y análisis. El éxodo final de la Guerra Civil fue un hecho histórico de gran importancia. Fue una de las consecuencias mayores de la Guerra, supuso la movilización de más de 500.000 españoles y ha supuesto una herida abierta en la sociedad española, que sólo el paso de los años ha ido cicatrizando poco a poco.
