Emanuel Lasker 2nd World Champion, 1894 - 1921 Emanuel Lasker was born in Berlinchen, Germany on 24th December, 1868. He was taught chess by his elder brother, Berthold. As a child Lasker displayed a talent for both chess and mathematics. He attended a school in Berlin to develop his mathematical skills further and he later went on to study mathematics at Erlangen University. He achieved the German master title in 1889. In 1892 he won his first important success in a small but strong tournament in London when he took first place a half a point ahead of Blackburne. Lasker then played a match against Blackburne and when he won decisively he began to think of the possibility of becoming world champion. He challenged Tarrasch but his challenge was declined. Lasker told him that he should first win a major tournament. However, there were still doubts about who was the best player. The general feeling was that, as Steinitz was 58 years old at this time, Lasker had won the world champion match because of Steinitz's advancing years. As Tarrasch said

Emanuel Lasker studied mathematics and philosophy at several German universities and was a student of Hilbert 's receiving a doctorate in 1902. In 1905 he introduced the notion of a primary ideal, which corresponds to an irreducible variety, and plays a role similar to prime powers in the prime decomposition of an integer. In 1894 Lasker became World Chess Champion and is considered by many to be the greatest chess player ever. He held the World Chess Championship until 1921. When Hitler came to power he was forced to leave Germany and had to come out of retirement in chess to make enough money to live. Gareth Williams, writing in Chess Monthly, describes Lasker's last few years: ... the Laskers were forced out of their comfortable retirement. The regime confiscated the Laskers' Berlin appartment, their farm at Thyrow and their lifetime savings. Emanuel and Martha Lasker, in their old age, suddenly found themselves destitute, without money home or homeland. In order to survive Lasker had once again to build a career in chess. The first tournament he was invited to after nine years retirement was Zurich. ..... Lasker was invited to Moscow in 1936 to participate in another great international tournament. ... The Laskers were encouraged to stay on in Moscow after the tournament and Dr Emanuel Lasker, mathematician, was invited to become a member of the Moscow Academy of Science. The offer was accepted and the Laskers took up permanent residence in Moscow. Emanuel became absorbed with his mathematical studies at Moscow Academy.

Emanuel Lasker - 2nd World Champion
Emanuel Lasker became the second world champion (1894-1921) in the history. Besides, he was a chess theorist and a literary man (worked as an editor for “Lasker’s Chess Magazine”). As a student he began taking part in Berlin chess society tournaments, and a bit later in international tournaments as well. Among Laskers’s most important victories are: Petersburg (1895/96), Nuernberg (1896), London (1899), Paris (1900), Petersburg (1909 and 1914). What concerns matches for the world championship, Lasker defeated: Steinitz (1896/7; score 12.5:4.5), Marshall (1907; score 11.5:3.5), Tarrasch (1908; score 10.5:5.5), Janowski (1909; score 8:2, 1910; score 9.5:1.5). In 1910 he played a draw with Schlechter (score 5:5). Lasker’s way of playing chess perfectly combined logic, highly developed technique (endgame in particular) and a psychologic approach of his own toward an opponent. “Most ideas of chess art are unimaginable without Lasker… He sets an example for chess players both of the present generation and generations to come…” (Alexander Alekhine). We present the most complete collection of Emanuel Lasker’s games ever compiled. It contains 630 commented games, spanning the entire career of the 2nd World Chess Champion, who held the title for 26 consecutive years from 1896 to 1921. All the games are deeply annotated by GMs Khalifman and St. Petersburg IMs. Includes also a biography, the tournament and match records, and a number of rare photos.

A stafétabotot 1921-ben Capablanca vette át tõle.

Emanuel Lasker
(Berlinchen 24/12/1868 - New York 13/1/1941)

Emanuel Lasker
Giocatore tedesco (Berlinchen, 24.12.1868 - New York, 13.1.1941).
