Von 1964-1970 konnten Absolventen/innen der Heil-pädagogischen Studienkurse (Hilfsschullehrerausbildung) der Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität Mainz eine Zusatzlehrbefähigung für Sprachheilpädagogik bei den Professoren Dr. phil. Karlheinz Berg und Dr. med. Peter Biesalski erwerben. 1971 wurde mit der Berufung von Prof. Dr. phil. Edmund Westrich erstmals in Rheinland-Pfalz ein viersemestriges Aufbaustudium der Sprachbehindertenpädagogik für erfahrene Lehrkräfte aus Grund- und Hauptschulen zunächst an der Erziehungswissenschaftlichen Hochschule Rheinland-Pfalz und ab 1986 wieder an der Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität Mainz möglich. Seit Mitte der 70er Jahre ist in Rheinland-Pfalz das Sonderschullehrerstudium nur noch grundständig (ohne vorherige Schulerfahrung) möglich, und es werden auch Diplompädagogen/innen mit dem Schwerpunktfach Sprachbehindertenpädagogik ausgebildet. Dies ist zur Zeit in Landau und auch noch in Mainz möglich, da mit Frau Prof. Dr. phil. Evelyne Heinemann eine Lehrende 1993 nicht mit von Mainz nach Landau gewechselt ist. Damals, nach über 50 Jahren in Mainz, verlagerte das Kultusministerium das Institut für Sonderpädagogik gegen dessen erklärten Willen von der Universität Mainz an die Universität Koblenz-Landau, Abteilung Landau, einmalig in Deutschland an eine Hochschule ohne Universitätsklinikum.
