EDMUND LANDAU AND THE HEBREW UNIVERSITY The story of Landau's relations with the just-founded Hebrew University is an intricate drama, in which academic considerations were mixed with questions of power and prestige. Landau found himself in the midst of a power-struggle between Dr. Magnes (the University's first Chancellor) on one side, and Weizmann and Einstein on the other. Although he was a-political, his Prussian character, and his insistence on conditions that couldn't be met by the University authorities, made negotiations with him difficult. After teaching at the Einstein Institute for Mathematics for one year (1928), Landau went back to Germany, never to return to Jerusalem. As a German patriot, Landau had a senior position in the renowned Goettingen University. He came from a rich, assimilated Jewish family. Despite that, he invested a great deal of efforts in the early 1920's in the idea of establishing a Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He served as a member of the advisory committee of the university, took care of the purchase of Felix Klein's library for the Institute of Mathematics, and was involved in the fine details of the building plan. At the opening ceremonies of the Hebrew University (2/4/1925) he delivered a lecture on "Solved and Unsolved Problems in the Elementary Theory of Numbers", and a day later he gave a speech on the occasion of laying the cornerstone for the Institute of Mathematics. Both were given in Hebrew, which he had privately learned in Germany, apparently considering the idea of immigrating to Jerusalem.

Edmund Landau Frobenius and Landau received his doctorate in 1899 for a work on number theory . Landau was always interested in mathematical puzzles and even before he received his doctorate he had published two books on mathematical problems in chess. He submitted this Habilitation thesis in 1901, only two years after his doctorate, again on analytic number theory Frobenius was somewhat critical of the area Landau worked in, and remarked at times that Landau's work would cease to become important if the Riemann hypothesis were proved. Landau taught at the University of Berlin from 1899 until 1909. During this period his publication list rapidly grew so that by 1904 his publications exceeded his age of 27. While at Berlin his ability to teach became clearly evident. He taught beginners courses, which he did not have to take, and also lectured on his own speciality of number theory and, in addition, other lecture courses on foundations of mathematics, irrational numbers and set theory. The Landau Center for Research in Mathematical Analysis and Related Areas is a center supported by the Minerva Foundation (Germany) and devoted to promoting scientific cooperation between the Hebrew University and German scientists in all fields of mathematics, with particular emphasis on analysis. The Landau Center has been in operation since 1989. It is administered by a board of six mathematicians, 3 Germans and 3 Israelis, who appoint a director to run the center's activities. The main research activities of the Center lie in diverse areas of mathematics where mathematical analysis plays a central role. This includes the traditional areas of mathematical analysis such as partial differential equations, functional analysis and ergodic theory, but extends also to differential geometry and number theory. The Landau Center's activities include the granting of post-doctoral fellowships to Israeli and German nationals, as well as fellowships for doctoral students. The Center also supports exchange visits of shorter duration by Israeli and German scientists.

Edmund Landau
Edmund Landau wurde am 14. Februar 1877 in Berlin als Sohn des Gynäkologen Leopold Landau und seiner Frau Johanna geb. Jacoby geboren.

25 years of German-Israeli Scientific Cooperation at the Hebrew University. EDMUND LANDAU CENTER FOR RESEARCH IN MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS
The Edmund Landau Center for Research in Mathematical Analysis was established in 1988 to promote cooperation between Israeli and German researchers in the area of mathematical analysis.
The research activities encompass diverse areas in which mathematical analysis plays a central role. These include traditional areas of analysis, such as partial differential equations, functional analysis, and ergodic theory, as well as differential geometry and number theory.
The Landau Center awards doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships to Israeli and German mathematicians. Short exchange visits between Israel and Germany for Center members are also supported by the Center.
The Landau Lectures, a series of three lectures given by a distinguished mathematician, takes place every year. The Center covers the expenses of the guest speakers. The Center also sponsors schools, workshops and symposia in areas related to mathematical analysis. Past conference topics include: fluid dynamics; dynamical systems, topology and analysis; stochastic dynamics; and complex analysis.
Two symposia are scheduled for 1995-1996; one on partial differential equations and mathematical physics and the other on regulators in analysis geometry and number theory.
