Joseph-Louis Lagrange is usually considered to be a French mathematician, but the Italian Encyclopaedia [40] refers to him as an Italian mathematician. They certainly have some justification in this claim since Lagrange was born in Turin and baptised in the name of Giuseppe Lodovico Lagrangia. Lagrange's father was Giuseppe Francesco Lodovico Lagrangia who was Treasurer of the Office of Public Works and Fortifications in Turin, while his mother Teresa Grosso was the only daughter of a medical doctor from Cambiano near Turin. Lagrange was the eldest of their 11 children but one of only two to live to adulthood. Turin had been the capital of the duchy of Savoy, but become the capital of the kingdom of Sardinia in 1720, sixteen years before Lagrange's birth. Lagrange's family had French connections on his father's side, his great-grandfather being a French cavalry captain who left France to work for the Duke of Savoy. Lagrange always leant towards his French ancestry, for as a youth he would sign himself Lodovico LaGrange or Luigi Lagrange, using the French form of his family name. Despite the fact that Lagrange's father held a position of some importance in the service of the king of Sardinia, the family were not wealthy since Lagrange's father had lost large sums of money in unsuccessful financial speculation. A career as a lawyer was planned out for Lagrange by his father, and certainly Lagrange seems to have accepted this willingly. He studied at the College of Turin and his favourite subject was classical Latin. At first he had no great enthusiasm for mathematics, finding Greek geometry rather dull.

Lagrange, in one of the later years of his life, imagined that he had overcome the difficulty (of the parallel axiom). he went so far as to write a paper, which he took with him to the Institute, and began to read it. But in the first paragraph something struck him which he had not observed: he muttered: " Il faut que j'y songe encore ", and put the paper in his pocket.

Joseph-Louis Lagrange
Lagrange, along with Euler and the Bernoullis, developed the calculus of variations for dealing with mechanics. He was responsible for laying the groundwork for a different way of writing down Newton's Equations of Motion. This is what has been called Lagrangian Mechanics. It accomplishes the same thing that Newton's Equations provide - the path followed by all the bodies studied in a problem - but the form of the equations is actually better because the form does not change when the coordinate system used to describe a problem changes. Lagrangian Mechanics have been widely used to solve many mechanical problems. He also introduced a new variable for studying conservative systems which is now called the Lagrangian. The integral of the Lagrangian of the system has been called the "action" of a system and is given the symbol S. This rewriting of Newton's equations opened minds to new forms of mechanics. However, though this rewrites Newton's Equations, there is nothing fundamentally different - it is simply a more convenient way to write it down and solve it.

Lagrange excelled in all fields of analysis and number theory and analytical and celestial mechanics. Lagrange's interest in mathematics began at a very early age when he read a copy of a book by Halley Lagrange served as professor of geometry at the Royal Artillery School in Turin from 1755 to 1766 and helped to found the Royal Academy of Science there in 1757. In 1764 he was awarded his first prize of many when the Paris Academy awarded him a prize for his essay on the libration of the moon. When Euler left the Berlin Academy of Science, Lagrange succeeded him as director of mathematics 1766. In 1787 he left Berlin to become a member of the Paris Academy of Science, where he remained for the rest of his career. Lagrange survived the French Revolution while others did not. Lagrange said on the death of the chemist Lavoisier
It took only a moment to cause this head to fall and a hundred years will not suffice to produce its like.

Joseph-Louis Lagrange is usually considered to be a French mathematician, but he was born in Italy. He studied at the College of Turin, and his favorite subject was classical Latin. At first he had no great enthusiasm for mathematics, finding Greek geometry rather dull. Lagrange's interest in mathematics began when he read a copy of Halley's 1693 work on the use of algebra in optics. Lagrange was largely self-taught and did not have the benefit of studying with leading mathematicians. In 1754, he published his first mathematical work, an analogy between the binomial theorem and the successive derivatives of the product of functions. He began working on the tautochrone, and made some important discoveries which would contribute substantially to the new subject of the calculus of variations. After sending some results to Euler and impressing him, he was appointed professor of mathematics at the Royal Artillery School in Turin in 1755. In 1756, Lagrange generalized results which Euler had himself obtained in calculus of variations. In 1756, he was elected to the Berlin Academy. In 1757, Lagrange was a founding member of what would become the Royal Academy of Science of Turin. One of the major roles of this new Society was to publish a scientific journal. Lagrange was a major contributor to the first three volumes.

Joseph Louis Lagrange (1736 - 1813)
From `A Short Account of the History of Mathematics' (4th edition, 1908) by W. W. Rouse Ball. Joseph Louis Lagrange , the greatest mathematician of the eighteenth century, was born at Turin on January 25, 1736, and died at Paris on April 10, 1813. His father, who had charge of the Sardinian military chest, was of good social position and wealthy, but before his son grew up he had lost most of his property in speculations, and young Lagrange had to rely for his position on his own abilities. He was educated at the college of Turin, but it was not until he was seventeen that he shewed any taste for mathematics - his interest in the subject being first excited by a memoir by Halley across which he came by accident. Alone and unaided he threw himself into mathematical studies; at the end of a year's incessant toil he was already an accomplished mathematician, and was made a lecturer in the artillery school. The first fruit of Lagrange's labours here was his letter, written when he was still only nineteen, to Euler, in which he solved the isoperimetrical problem which for more than half a century had been a subject of discussion. To effect the solution (in which he sought to determine the form of a function so that a formula in which it entered should satisfy a certain condition) he enunciated the principles of the calculus of variations. Euler recognized the generality of the method adopted, and its superiority to that used by himself; and with rare courtesy he withheld a paper he had previously written, which covered some of the same ground, in order that the young Italian might have time to complete his work, and claim the undisputed invention of the new calculus. The name of this branch of analysis was suggested by Euler. This memoir at once placed Lagrange in the front rank of mathematicians then living.
