As an assistant professor at the University of Michigan in 1913, Oskar Klein invented the idea that extra dimensions may be physically quite real, though smaller than ours, and that they could lead to the observed forces beyond gravity when looked at from our four-dimensional world. (This idea was studied independently by T. Kaluza and is now called Kaluza-Klein theory.) Klein's impact on physics is much broader the Klein-Gordon equation is still used daily, and his name is associated with several additional major accomplishments. Research about critical states is currently a very active field, which is important both scientifically and techologically. The research has implications for most areas of physics, ranging from the early universe to critical fluctuations in superconductors and superfluids (my own area of research), certain models of the brain, hardening of steel, forest fires, etc etc. I will explain what a critical state is thought to be, and discuss some theory, experiments, and simulations. Oskar Klein

The Kaluza-Klein idea of extra spacetime dimensions continues to pervade current attempts to unify the fundamental forces, but in ways somewhat different from that originally envisaged. We present a modern perspective on the role of internal dimensions in physics, focussing in particular on superstring theory. A novel result is the interpretation of Kaluza-Klein string states as extreme black holes.(Talk delivered at the Oskar Klein Centenary Nobel Symposium, Stockholm, September 19-21, 1994.)

Oskar Klein was was the youngest son of Sweden' s first rabbi, Gottlieb Klein, who was originally from the Southern Carpathian. Gottlieb Klein received his doctorate from Heidelberg and moved to Sweden in 1883. He evidently instilled an interest in learning in his young son, as Oskar became quite fond of biology at an early age. This interest changed to chemistry around the age of 15 and soon after, in 1910, Svante Arrhenius, at what seems to be the behest of Gottlieb, invited Oskar to work in his laboratory at the Nobel Institute. Here he took up an interest in solubility and he published his first paper in 1912 on the solubility of zinc hydroxide in alkalis. This was the very same year that he finished his secondary education. He waited, however, until 1914 to take the University exam. Arrhenius wanted to send Klein to work with Jean-Baptiste Perrin in his laboratory at the University of Paris but the plan was foiled by the outbreak of World War I. Klein found himself caught up in the tempest and saw military service in 1915 and 1916. After his service concluded, but with the war still raging, he returned to work with Arrhenius. Their work now centred around studying dielectric constants of alcohols in various solvents. During this particular stay in Stockholm, he met Hendrik A Kramers, who, at the time (1917), was a student of
