Some short "biographies"
In this paper I have mentioned a number of almost unknown mathematicians and other persons. Therefore I will give some biographical information here. For completeness, I also include the well-known ones. The sources I have used are referred to in parenthesis. George Anson (1697-1762) was an English admiral. Famous for his journey around the world 1740-44. M. P. for Hedon 1744-47. ( Apollonius of Perga (ca. 200 BC-ca. 100 BC) was a Greek mathematician. His famous work, The Conics , studied the conic sections in remarkable detail, and introduced the terms parabola, ellipse and hyperbola. ( Archimedes of Syracuse (287 BC-212 BC) was a Greek mathematician and inventor. His greatest contributions were in geometry. His most famous work was Measurement of the Circle Isaac Barrow (1630-1677) was an English mathematician. Professor of Greek at Cambridge, and geometry at Gresham College. Became the first Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge in 1663. Teacher of Newton. Developed a method of determining tangents, and found a geometric version of the fundamental theorem of calculus. ( George Berkeley (1685-1753) was an Irish philosopher. He studied at the University of Dublin, and worked at Trinity College, Dublin 1707-12. In 1710 he published

The Analysis per quantitatum series, fluxiones, ac differentias marks only the third appearance of Newton's purely mathematical work in print. It is significant for both its content and for its role in the famous priority dispute between Newton and Leibniz over the invention of the calculus. The Contents
As a compilation, the book contains four mathematical treatises and a sampling of correspondence, all related to Newton's work on the calculus. Two of the treatises had already been published in Latin in the first edition of the Opticks (1704). These are the "Tractatus de quadrata curvarum" and the "Enumeratione linearum tertii ordinis". A third treatise is entitled "De methodis differentialis". It contains investigations of what are now known as the Newton-Bessel or Newton-Stirling formulas, which Newton had been working on as early as 1676, but which he had not published. The jewel of this book, however, is the tract known as "De analysi per aequationes numero terminorum infinitas". It was written by Newton in 1669 in response to his reading of Nicholas Mercator's

95. Literature And Science, 1660-1834 Published By Pickering & Chatto
With a Summary Exposition of the Cartesian and Newtonian Systems, in JohnKeill, An Examination of Dr Burnet's Theory of the Earth, etc.

Literature and Science,
2 Sets of 4 Volumes General Editor: Judith Hawley Volume editors: Brian Dolan, Charlotte Grant
Richard Hamblyn Rob Iliffe, Cheryce Kramer
Clark Lawlor Trea Martyn Michael Newton and David Clifford
Advisory editors: Akihito Suzuki and Kasahara Yorimichi This collection highlights the common ground between fields that were once thought to be independent of one another. Its appearance is particularly timely because the periodisation of history, the nature of the new knowledge and the relationship between literature, history and culture are currently receiving sustained and fruitful critical attention. Science and literature were until recently two fields thought to be distinct, fenced in by special languages and cultivating different bodies of knowledge. In the long eighteenth century there were no such distinctions and there was considerable cross fertilisation between literature and scientific advancement. At that time, people pursuing a wide range of interests met socially in shared spaces such as learned societies and coffee houses, and were also united in one person, in the figure of the polymath and virtuoso. Literature and Science reproduces, in facsimile, primary texts which embody the polymathic nature of the literature of science, and the editorial matter provides overviews and extensive references. These volumes provide a much-needed resource for specialised academics, and researchers with a broad cultural interest in the long eighteenth century.
