The Transportation Models in the field of Network Flow Programming.
Antecedents
Probably the first publication about the Transportation Model dates from 1781. By this time its author, Gaspard Monge (1746-1818), a well-known mathematician in the geometry descriptive field, worked under the orders of Napoleon Bonaparte in infrastructure works for his army. His work was published in the “ Memoires de l'Academie des Sciences de l'Institut de France and consisted in minimizing the cost of backfilling n places with surplus brash from m other places; the brash provided by m origins a , a , …, a m had to be moved to n destinations b , b , …, b m with costs c ij proportional to the distance between the origin i to the destination j . 1 Introduction
During the last years, history of science and, in particular, history of Computer Science attracted great attention all around the world.
This interest can be explained by the natural endeavour to "sum up" at the threshold of the new century. In the last decade of the 20th century, this trend could be traced in different areas of human activity. In this respect, Computer Science (and Cybernetics) deserves special observation. This young science, which appeared as late as in the middle of the century, had quite exceptional achievements. It is the real basis of what is now called "New Technological Revolution". Up to the recent time, the history of Computing in Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union was practically unknown to the computer community in the West. This situation is now changing. In 1996, on the 50th Anniversary of Computing, tne IEEE Computer Society has honoured prominent Russian computer scientists Victor Glushkov, Sergey Lebedev and Alexey Lyapunov as Computer Pioneers among other Eastern European scientists [1]. The "Computer Pioneer" Award was established in 1981 by the IEEE CS to honour those people whose efforts resulted in the creation and continued validity of Computer Science and Computer Technology. Among the 55 laureates of this Award are prominent scientists such as Arthur Burks, John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Niclaus Wirth, Heinz Zemanek.

Leonid Vital’evich Kantorovich: A Man and a Scientist. Vol. 1 [in Russian]. / Ed. by V. L. Kantorovich, S. S. Kutateladze, and Ya. I. Fet.
This book concerns one of the most striking pages of history of Russian science: the life and creative work of the great mathematician and economist, Nobel Prize Winner Leonid Vital’evich Kantorovich.
    L. V. Kantorovich devoted his life to the struggle for recognition of new scientific methods of planning and organizing economy discovered by him. The only purpose he had was to help his country.
This book presents a collection of autobiographical materials, memoirs, selected papers and addresses he could not publish at those times. The book is intended for a general reader interested in the history of science and the lives of outstanding people.

A Collection of Papers Dedicated to the Memory of Leonid Vital'evick Kantorovitch
Edited by LEV J. LEIFMAN, American Mathematical Society
With a foreword by WASSILY LEONTIEF

This is a collection of papers on the work of Leonid Kantorovich, a Russian mathematician and economist, and a leading contributor to the fields of optimization and mathematical economics. Kantorovich invented linear programming then applied this theory to optimal macroeconomic planning in a socialist economy, for which he received the Nobel Prize. The book is dedicated to the memory of Kantorovich, who died in 1986.
