    Russian version
    Leonid Vitalievich Kantorovich
The characteristic trait of the scientific activity of Leonid Kantorovich, one of the greatest mathematicians of our century, is a natural combination of abstract and concrete things, of fundamental and applied researches. His first works concerned delicate problems of the set theory. Later he became one of the first Soviet specialists on functional analysis. In the 30s he laid down the foundations of the theory of semi-ordered spaces which constitutes now a vast chapter of functional analysis bordering algebra and the measure theory. At the same time he anticipated the ideas of the future theory of generalized functions which became current only in the 50s. Kantorovich obtained beautiful results on the approximation theory. The approach to Sobolev's embedding theorem suggested by Kantorovich and based on his estimations of integral operators is well known.
Along with these (and many other) works on "pure" mathematics, Kantorovich conducted systematically researches of applied character, which were by no means separated from the "fundamental" part of his work. General conceptions and broad outlook which were characteristic for his works on functional analysis ensured his success in applied fields. A characteristic example is a famous work "Functional analysis and applied mathematics" which is a bright confirmation of S.L.Sobolev's statement "Modern computational mathematics is inconceivable without Banach spaces as well as without computers". The works of Kantorovich on applying functional analysis to computational mathematics, in particular, on the Newton method, are well known.

    Residence: USSR
Affiliation: Academy of Sciences, Moscow Kantorovich was a professor of economics at the University of Leningrad from 1944 to 1960. He became the Director of Mathematical Economic Methods at the Siberian Division of the Soviet Academy of Science in 1960. He was appointed as the Laboratory Chief of the Institute of National Economic Management in Moscow in 1971. He shared the Nobel Prize in 1975 with Tjalling Koopmans for their contribution to the theory of optimum allocation of resources. "His first major breakthrough came in 1938 when he was consulting to the Soviet Government's Laboratory of the Plywood Trust. Asked to devise a technique for distributing raw materials to maximize inputs, Kantorovich saw that the problem was a mathematical one: to maximize a linear function subject ot many contstraints. This technique he developed is now known as linear programming." Works by Leonid Vitalievich Kantorovich:

Kantorovich Russia’s Genius: Leonid V. Kantorovich by Benjamin McMillan The Life and Achievements of Leonid Vitalevich Kantorovich ... by Sarah Campion Russia’s Genius: Leonid V. Kantorovich by Benjamin McMillan Leonid V. Kantorovich was born in the city of Leningrad in January of 1912 to a meager family. His father, Vitalij Kantorovich, died when Leonid was only 10 years old, leaving his mother, Paulina to raise him herself. Leonid grew up during violent times in Russia. During the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, Leonid and his mother fled to Byelorussia to escape the bloodshed before returning to their home more than a year later (Kantorovich). Leonid was a naturally inquisitive child with a broad range of interests including politics and modern history. Upon entering the Mathematical Department of the Leningrad University at the mere age of 14, Leonid soon realized that his main interests lay in the fields of science and mathematics. Leonid immediately excelled at mathematics and within his second year at the University he was already working on complex and abstract mathematics. By the age of eighteen, Leonid had already distinguished himself as an authority in mathematics. When Leonid graduated from the university he remained there to teach and continue his research in theoretical mathematics. By this period in his life, Leonid had begun to shift his concentration towards applied mathematics problems. His work in theoretical mathematics was quite renowned among his colleagues and he had received numerous accolades for his work in that field. As it would turn out, Leonid’s greatest contributions would not be in theoretical mathematics at all, but rather applied mathematical economics. Such accomplishments would not have been possible, however, were it not for his early work in mathematical theory (Kantorovich).

    http://alpha.montclair.edu/~lebelp/RolodexofFamousEconomists.html
The Rolodex of Famous Economists What makes an economist famous? There are two basic criteria, and which are at times uncorrelated with each other: recognition by one's colleagues and recognition by the public at large. Among economists, being famous tends to translate in terms of the number of published works, along with the number of times such work is cited by other economists. Published work and citations are what drives, for example, the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics selection process. As Paul Samuelson once said, the only coin of worth among economists is the recognition by one's colleagues. Critics of economics have pointed to the insular nature of recognition criteria practiced by economists and have contended that all too often they write with an increasingly abstruse theoretical and mathematical jargon that ignores too many real world issues. As one economist once said when the empirical data did not fit well in a standard econometric model, "So much the worse for reality". Yet economists have exerted a powerful influence on the course of events over times and they have done so by translating what seems at times as overly abstract notions into concrete tools of understanding economic events, predicting future events, and guiding public policy. As a sampler, consider the following economists. Adam Smith (1723-1790) is famous for his
