Although of little importance as a mathematician, William Jones is well known to historians of mathematics since he corresponded with many 17th Century mathematicians, including Newton . He was, however, elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1711. Jones served at sea, teaching mathematics on board ship between 1695 and 1702. After his voyages were over he became a teacher of mathematics in London. He also held a number of posts in government offices. Jones published Synopsis palmariorum mathesios 1706 , a book intended for beginners which included the differential calculus and infinite series. This book is also famed since the symbol p is used in it with its modern meaning. Jones served on the Royal Society committee appointed to decide who had invented the infinitesimal calculus, Newton or Leibniz. Navigation was also a topic which interested Jones and his first published work was A New Compendium of the Whole Art of Navigation.

William Jones William Jones was born in Oklahoma, USA on the 28 th of March 1871. He was the nation’s first Native American to get a Ph.D. in anthropology. In 1908 he was working as an Assistant Curator in the Smithsonian Museum, http://www.si.edu/info/education.htm . William Jones, Fay-Cooper Cole, and Albert Lewis (all Assistant Curators) were responsible for the Smithsonian’s great ethnographic collection from Melanesia and the Philippines, with help from S.C. Simms, Fletcher Gardner and Laura Benedict. Jones was said to be a student of the Indian and Filipino races, and a friend to all indigenous peoples, despite the conditions surrounding his premature death. William Jones did much of his work in the Philippines. After Jones had spent 16 months in the land of the Ilongots, doing research, he was assassinated. This began because from a dispute over transportation. Towards the end of his study, Dr. Jones had packed all of his specimens, from research, into crates and arranged it with the Ilongots for the crates to be brought down the Cagayan River on bamboo rafts called balsas. The shipments for the field museum were to be brought from Dumobato to Echague and then to Manila. The date of his death isn’t definite, many report the date of March 28

pornographic yet chaste, distanced yet mesmerizing, reticent yet moving
Introduction "God alone is great." So began the humbling eulogy for Louis XIV, delivered by Jean-Baptiste Massillon . Nearly three centuries later, this statement still haunts a pair of films by William Jones: the first, about a town in the grasp of religious fundamentalism; the second, about a man who mistook himself for a messiah.
    Filmography
    Massillon
(16mm, color, 70 minutes, 1991) The filmmaker of Massillon knows "you can't go home again," and yet he does. He photographs beautiful scenery and makes political commentary; he recounts childhood betrayals and discusses the etymology of the word "sodomy" - all this and more in an unconventional début. Massillon was included in the 1993 Whitney Biennial Exhibition, and was also shown at Los Angeles Filmforum, Pacific Film Archive, New York's Artists Space, and Toronto's Pleasure Dome "The best of the documentaries screened [at the Ninth Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival] is William Jones'

JONES, M.—JONES, T. R. commissary. In the confusion during the following years the burial place of Paul Jones was forgotten; but in June 1899 General Horace Porter, American ambassador to France, began a systematic search for the body, and after excavations on the site of the old Protestant cemetery, now covered with houses, a leaden coffin was discovered, which contained the body in a remarkable state of preservation. In July 1905 a fleet of American war-ships carried the body to Annapolis, where it now rests in one of the buildings of the naval academy. Jones was a seaman of great bravery and technical ability, but over-jealous of his reputation and inclined to be querulous and boastful. The charges by the English that he was a pirate were particularly galling to him. Although of unprepossessing appearance, 5 ft. 7 in. in height and slightly round-shouldered, he was noted for his pleasant manners and was welcomed into the most brilliant courts of Europe. Romance has played with the memory of Paul Jones to such an extent that few accounts of his life are correct. Of the early biographies the best are Sherburne's (London, 1825), chiefly a collection of Jones's correspondence; the Janette-Taylor Collection (New York, 1830), containing numerous extracts from his letters and journals; and the life by A. S. MacKenzie (2 vols., New York, 1846). In recent years a number of new biographies have appeared, including A. C. Buell's (2 vols., 1900), the trustworthiness of which has been discredited, and Hutching Hapgood's in the Riverside Biographical Series (1901). The life by Cyrus Townsend Brady in the " Great Commanders Series " (1900) is perhaps the best.
