T he Casey Jones Museum at Vaughan observed the 102nd anniversary of the wreck at Vaughan on April 27 and 28, 2002. Please see our story and photos I n 1972 Gurner published his account of the accident based on Brotherhood lodge records, official I.C. Railroad records, interviews and his own years of experience as a fireman and engineer. O n the night of April 29, 1900, Casey and engine 382 with Sim Webb firing were listed out of Memphis on train #1 with six cars southbound for Canton. Conductor was J. C. Turner. The scheduled departure time was 11:15. Records indicate he left at 12:50; one hour and thirty-five minutes late. A good engine, a good fireman, a light train and away late; the perfect setting for a record run. He made that record run too, if the oft quoted departure time of 12:50 is correct, for Casey went to Goodman on time for a meet with #2.

Casey Jones Saga Relived at Vaughan, Miss.
In the October, 1953, issue of Illinois Central Magazine was coverage of a July gathering at Vaughan honoring the memory of Casey. T he lonesome call of Casey Jones famous “whippoorwill” locomotive whistle echoed once again across tin fields and down the track at Vaughan Miss., recently. T he whistle-blowing was part of ceremony, held on July 24, which saw railroad history come to life in this little village located 14 miles north Canton on the main line of the Illinois Central. On that day, more than 3000 persons gathered to witness the unveiling of a bronze marker at the spot where Casey Jones, hero of American railroading folklore, met his fate on the night of April 29, 1900. O n the speakers platform, set up for the occasion, sat two persons more closely associated with the events of that night than anybody else. One was Janie Jones, widow of the famed

Mrs. Jones, described by the newspapers as “a sprightly woman of 81 years with red hair still showing through the gray,” was making her first appearance at the scene of the accident. The other person was Sim Webb, the Negro fireman who rode with Casey on that fateful night.

Vaughan Jones' visit to Sweden, April, 2001
At the invitation of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and its National Committee for Mathematics, as well as of seven Swedish universities, Vaughan Jones visited Sweden April 4-19. His lectures were as follows:
  • Linköping, April 5: Knots
  • Stockholm, KTH, April 6: Noncommutative Geometry
  • Uppsala, April 9: Noncommutative Geometry
  • UmeÃ¥, April 10: Noncommutative Geometry
  • LuleÃ¥, April 11: Noncommutative Geometry
  • Lund, April 17, in the morning: Planar Algebras
  • Lund, April 17, at 18:30, Lund Mathematical Society: Knots
  • Gothenburg, April 18: Noncommutative Geometry
Biographical note
Vaughan F. R. Jones was born on the 31st of December 1952, at Gisborne, New Zealand. He did his prepatory and undergraduate work in Auckland, N.Z., but left for Geneva to do his graduate work in 1974. First he did a stint at Ecole de Physique but eventually wrote a thesis in mathematics in 1979 under the guidance of the well-known topologist A. Haefliger. This was also the year in which he married Martha Myers. The next year he took up a post-doc position as a Hedrick at UCLA, and after a shorter interlude in Pennsylvania he returned to California, as a professor of mathematics at the University of California at Berkeley, where he has remained since 1985. In addition to the Fields medal, he has enjoyed a variety of awards and distinctions, the complete list of which may be too tedious to list here. Suffice it to single out, among his fellowships in various prestigous societies like the Royal Society, the AASA and the National Academy of Sciences, the award of the Honorary Vice Presidency for life of the International Guild of Knot Tyers, a position he has enjoyed since 1992.

using the Real Player software. Abstract: John Conway invented skein theory as a tool for manipulating knots and links and in particular calculating the Alexander polynomial. It was extended somewhat in the 1980's when new knot polynomials were discovered. More recently it has proved useful in the theory of subfactors as a tool to construct and analyse certain exotic structures. These structures remain related to low dimensional topology as they have topological quantum field theories attached. The unifying language is that of planar algebra. In 1984 Jones discovered an astonishing relationship between von Neumann algebras and geometric topology. As a result, he found a new polynomial invariant for knots and links in 3-space. His invariant had been missed completely by topologists, in spite of intense activity in closely related areas during the preceding 60 years, and it was a complete surprise. As time went on, it became clear that his discovery had to do in a bewildering variety of ways with widely separated areas of mathematics and physics. Jones was awarded a Fields Medal at the 1990 International Congress in Kyoto, Japan for his remarkable and beautiful mathematical achievements.

THOMAS VAUGHAN "MELANCHOLY" JONES
Liverpool, England
About
"Melancholy" Jones One of Recognized for his poem, The Bank Robber
About "Melancholy" Jones: We asked "Melancholy" Jones to tell us about himself: I was brought up in Liverpool, England, the city that gives birth to sailors rather than cowboys. I guess that if you get right down to it, they are pretty much the same breed of men. Tough, yet gentle, and filled with a sense of rightness about the world and all things in it. Always ready to laugh when things seem to be going against them, always running wild and free. So why did I choose to be a cowboy rather than go to sea? Well, Liverpool was, in its heyday, the doorway to America. When European and British people headed for the United States, they passed through our port. Many of my immediate family were first in the queue. They first arrived in Massachusetts in 1638. Generation after generation followed on. The folk who made the greatest impression on me were my grandmother's older brothers and sisters, who arrived in Texas and Kansas in 1858. My aunts and uncles joined them in 1900. My life was filled with tales of ranching on the Concho and Pecos rivers. Texas Rangers, land feuds, gunfights and bank holdups, and the dangers faced by my cousins, all duly recorded in the local press. Seemed they had to overcome floods, firestorms, droughts and disaster before they made the land their own. Their descendants are still there, in Water Valley, Tom Green County, and many other areas in the West.

The humming of the bumble bee
Provides a perfect harmony
Pulsating in the fragrant air With perfumed flowers everywhere. Resplendent is the red, red rose In carmined, multi-floral pose Each budding tenor giving tongue To hold the rhythm of the song The hollyhocks and fuschias fill The treble and sopranos' trill Each bell created every year To ring in chorus, crystal clear. Begonias themselves appoint A bass profundo counterpoint While red hot pokers, breathing fire Co-ordinate our floral choir. But through the music can be found One perfect, honeyed, solo sound One note which makes the heart rejoice The violet's soft, melodic voice.
