Australia's Meteorological Pioneers
The foundations of Australia's meteorological records were laid at Sydney Cove by Lieutenant William Dawes who built a small observatory there and commenced regular observations in September 1788 (McAfee 1981). While participating fully in local exploration and other aspects of the early life of the colony, Dawes maintained his observations with great dedication, often making readings up to six times per day, through until December 1791, shortly before he returned prematurely to England, having incurred the displeasure of the Governor for his refusal to participate in reprisal raids against the Aborigines. Following Dawes' departure, the systematic collection of meteorological observations in the colony lapsed until the arrival of the soldier-scientist, Sir Thomas Brisbane, as Governor. He established an observatory at Parramatta where records were maintained from 1822 until 1826. The next systematic series of observations in the Sydney area was begun in 1832 by Commander Phillip Parker King, who had already, in 1822, published the first description of Australian climate

W.S. Jevons's papers comprise over 600 letters from family, relations, colleagues and academic associates, including Charles Babbage, mathematician and inventor of the Difference Engine calculating machine; Walter Bagehot, economist, political analyst and journalist; George Bentham, botanist; George Boole, mathematician and logician; John Bright, reforming orator and statesman; William Ewart Gladstone; Robert Harley, mathematician; Sir John Herschel, astronomer and chemist; Alfred Marshall, economist; James Martineau, the Unitarian divine; the philosopher and economist John Stuart Mill; Henry Enfield Roscoe , Professor of Chemistry at Owens College, 1857-1886; and Alfred Lord Tennyson. SUMMARY This article has two purposes. One is to answer the question whether Philosophy has influenced upon the economists usually recognized as those who founded the Marginalist Revolution in Economic Analysis or not. The other is to fix precisely the right sense of philosophical influence in Economic Analysis. As regards the first purpose, the considerations are restricted to William Jevons. A concise reference to Léon Walras and Karl Menger is included. About the second purpose, J. A. Schumpeter's negative opinion concerning relationship between Philosophy and Economic Analysis is discussed.

http://www.cooperativeindividualism.org/jevonsbio.html
William Stanley Jevons William Stanley Jevons was born in Liverpool, England. He studied chemistry and botany at University College. He was chair of political economy at University College until his retirement in 1880. At the age of 46, Jevons drowned while swimming. Carl Menger in Austria, Leon Walrus in France, and William Stanley Jevons in England separately yet simultaneously developed the theory of marginal utility to understand and to explain consumer behavior. As a result of their work, economics underwent a major theoretical revolution, known as the marginal or neoclassical revolution. Jevons was very influenced by utilitarianism which is an ethical theory which states that questions of social policy and individual morality should be answered by calculating the consequences of policies or actions on the utility of individuals. That which maximizes utility is the moral one. The early utilitarians were Jeremy Bentham, James Mill, and John Stuart Mill. Jevons was was a strong proponent of mathmatical economics. In 1871, he stated that," our science must be mathmatical, simply because it deals with quantities." However, he was aware that mathematical economics was not an exact science. According to Jevons," Many persons entertain a prejudice against mathematical language, arising out of a confusion between the ideas of a mathematical science and an exact science...but in reality, there is no such thing as an exact science, except in a comparative sense."

73. Coal Running Out In 1865!
iGreens. william Stanley jevons was one of the greatest economists of the 19thcentury. jevons, william Stanley. 1865, 1906 1965. The Coal Question.
http://www.igreens.org.uk/coal_running_out_in_1865.htm
Home Up Individualist Environmentalists iGreens William Stanley Jevons was one of the greatest economists of the 19th century. With Menger and Walras he was one of the three co-discoverers of marginal utility theory, the idea that as we consume more of something the value of each incremental unit diminishes. We value a glass of water to stop us dying of thirst much more than the same glass to help top up our swimming pools. However, despite his great mind he fell into the Malthusian trap in The Coal Question (1865). In this influential book he treated coal as the essential resource for the British industrial economy and argued that it was an exhaustible resource. He worried about "our present rapid multiplication when brought into comparison with a fixed amount of material resource" and feared that Britain's industrial growth would come to a halt because its coal reserves were running out. Worse still he argued "... it is useless the think of substituting any other kind of fuel for coal." "... some day our coal seams [may] be found emptied to the bottom, and swept clean like a coal-cellar. Our fires and furnaces ... suddenly extinguished, and cold and darkness ... left to reign over a depopulated country."
