More specifically Jacobi's attempts to find a simple compound angle formula for inverse trigonometric functions (i.e. arcsin(A+B) as a function of arcsinA and arcsinB). This proved fruitless despite Jacobi working on the problem for some considerable time, until Jacobi realised that a better approach would be to derive a simple compound angle formula for the trigonometric function itself (i.e. sin(A+B) as a function of sinA and sinB and then derive arcsin(A+B) from this, recall sin(A+B) = sinAcosB + cosAsinB). After this bitter sweet inspiration Carl Jacobi was moved to say (paraphrasing): '...whenever in trouble always invert..'
