In Remembrance With Love and Respect The death of Mahmud Abu-Saud on Saturday 24th April 1993 marks the end of arguably the most flamboyant and charismatic figure in the Muslim world. At the ripe old age of 79, he was here in the UK from the States on his annual lecture circuit. For members of YM he will be remembered for his instant willingness to do anything and go anywhere. His mind was forever alert and he could easily deal with questions of all complexities from persons of all complexions; there was the young man who thundered at Abu-Saud for his 'liberal' views on Islam and accused him of bringing Islam into disrepute, and there was the young lady who blushed brightly when Abu-Saud tried to charm her into marriage. Anecdotes from the life of Abu-Saud are many and profoundly instructive. On his wedding night he was called by Hasan Al-Banna to immediately come and see him. Abu-Saud protested, but he nevertheless drove through Cairo in the middle of the night thinking the matter might be of great urgency. Once he had arrived he saw Al-Banna pleasantly smiling. There was no urgent matter; Al-Banna just wanted to be sure that Abu Saud had not misplaced his priorities. On another occasion Al-Banna told Abu-Saud to take into his home a stranger who wanted to turn a new leaf in his life. Abu Saud enquired into his current background: the man was a professional assassin! Abu-Saud flared up: 'How do you expect me to take into my home a trained killer? What about my wife and children?' Al-Banna's reply was compelling: did Abu-Saud have a better suggestion? Here was a man who wanted to shun his criminal past. He required a new environment. He needed to be in constant contact with Muslims who would help him make the change in his life. Islam was not about hollow preachings and grand speeches. Needless to say the persuasive logic of Al-Banna won through and the ex-assassin became a welcome guest of Abu-Saud and his family. Because of Abu-Saud's energy and commitment to the movement Al-Banna made heavy demands upon him, and at one

Hassan al-Banna: The leader and the Movement
by Shaker El-sayed
(MAS Secretary General) After fifty-two years since he was assassinated, and seventy-three years after he established the twentieth century’s largest and most powerful Islamic movement: the Muslim Brothers, it is still difficult to write about a great Muslim giant like the late Imam Hassan El-Banna. On the one hand, we find a lot of misconceptions about the man and the movement, mostly due to a rigorous campaign of misinformation by both his foes, domestic and foreign, and the competition of other, yet Islamic movements. On the other hand, there is a massive amount of information that makes it very difficult to decide as to what to include and what to leave out. In this article, therefore, I preferred to let the Imam’s own words and work speak to us about his thoughts, beliefs, and vision for both the movement and the Muslim Ummah. After all, there is nothing more powerful in reflecting the true character of anyone than his own words and work.
Self-Awareness
O define Imam Hassan El Banna as he saw himself, I am going to use his answer to a Western journalist who asked him: “Tell me who are you?” The Imam responded: “I am a tourist who is seeking the truth, and a human who is searching for the meaning of his humanity amongst people, and a citizen who wants dignity, freedom, stability, and a good life for his nation, in the shade of the Upright Islam. I am a selfless person who, as he found the secret for his existence, called out: ‘My prayers, my sacrifice, my living and my dieing are all devoted to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. He has no partner. This is what I have been commanded, and I am the first of Muslims’. This is who I am, who are you?”

Autumn 2002 issue Breach of Faith by Patrick Gaffney, CSC Previous - Page 3 of 4 - Next But the frustration of many who feel oppressed, some of whom have also come to regard themselves as the vanguard of liberation for others, has taken a decisive turn recently as the resonant moral rhetoric of Islam was adopted by some opposition movements and employed as a vehicle of mass mobilization. This resort to a religious foundation for political assertion fits well with classical theories of Islamic jurisprudence: The Muslim tradition envisages a fusion of worldly power and spiritual authority (as exemplified by the idealized memory of the original umma or community of believers under the guidance of the Prophet in Medina).

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH THE MOST MERCIFUL THE MOST BENEFICENT Thanks to God the one, the judge who descended on his worshipper the Quran and made it the best declaration for all the two worlds . God bless and grant salvation on the best of all Adnan ancestors, on his family , comrades peace upon them all Arabs and persians. Anyhow what can I say it is of the God’s the Almighty conformation to make this nation: the nation of advice for abiding on charity and pious. From now on, I wanted to find a role and share in this advice when requesting the acceptance of His Almighty the God. The foremost duty of Moslems in the advice realm is the doctrine case which is the pivot for the maintenance of this nations. Each nation without such a doctrine is lost and deviated. It has no passage. The belief chapter is important in the world of legal incantation which is the field of our specialization. Our worthy ancestors as well as the followers and precedents wrote the books to orient the doctrine in this field. Anyhow it was noted recently that much of the books which were edited in the concerns of demon, spell and enchantments contain some violations to the pure Moslem doctrine and which were not confirmed in the pure Sunnah such as the book (a reportage with a Moslem Jenni ), etc. of the books which are edited for the purpose of financial earnings only and came in the period in which people are thirsty to read anything about the enchantment, demon and evil eye book. These books are being sold in several countries openly in the day time without any control. How much people were deceived with these books, how much people went insane as they read them. If the editors of such books can benefit from the contents of enchantment and talisman, one of them at least would be in a different situation and would supervise the world.

By Ms. Soumaya Ghanoushi
June 2001
The WahHabi movement derives its name from its founder the great revivalist Mohammed Ibn Abd al-Wahhab (1703-92). The movement this pioneer reformist established has ever since been known throughout the Muslim world as al-Wahhabiyya. The title is a neutral one, bearing no value-judgment. If it is an opinion on the movement you seek, then I say that it is to be praised and criticized at the same time.
The Wahhabi movement called for the reactivation of the revivalist heritage characteristic of the thought of the great Muslim rebel scholar Ibn Taymiyyah in the 13th century. The call to return to the original sources of the Q’uran and Sunnah in whose folds the giant of Muslim civilisation knew its birth, was revolutionary in its age, and essence. It directed Muslim consciousness away from the dry- as- dust scholastic disciplines of the fiq’hi schools and closed mathahibs. In its essence Abdel Wahhab’s salafiyyah stood against mathhabism, against blind dogmatism and imitation thus reattaching the long severed bond between the Muslim and the sources of his being. To apply itself to the wholy text and seek to concretize it in light of the conditions confronting the Muslim ummah was the banner it bore.
Abd al-Wahhab’s prominent efforts played a vital role in redeeming to Islam its rigorous monotheism, after it had been plagued with esoteric sufism and agnostic panatheism. The meaning of tawheed, the unity of God pure untarnished by human projections that render God into a mere sublimation of humanism.

Muslim influence in Spain still felt in daily life - ii
By Habeeb Salloum Besides the food crops, the Muslim brought to the Iberian Peninsula the cotton plant, which in Spanish is called algodon from the Arabic alqutn. They also developed the silk industry, to make Al-Andalus one of the major silk manufacturing countries of the medieval world. The fine fabrics of which Europe was to be proud in later centuries had their origin in this land of the Moors. The wealth generated by agriculture would have been insignificant were it not for the excellent irrigation system the Muslim constructed throughout Al-Andalus. When these former sons of the desert first came to the peninsula, they found a primitive form of a Roman irrigation network. After making a scientific study of the land, they improved this network greatly, completing many hydraulic projects for irrigating their whole domain.
