Hypatia of Alexandria
Hypatia was a charismatic educationalist born in Alexandria on 370 AD. She was the daughter of the philosopher Theon, who imparted to his daughter the knowledge of mathematics. She helped her father compose his eleven part observations on Ptolemy's Almagest. She is also believed to have helped her father produce a version of Euclid's Elements which eventually became the foundation for all subsequent editions of Euclid. She wrote commentaries on Diophantus's Arithmetica, on Apollonius's Conics and on the astronomical works of Ptolemy's. She lectured on mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, and mechanics. She is the earliest woman in recorded history to have made such a profound contribution to the development of mathematics, science and philosophy. She based her tradition on the teachings of Plotinus, the founder of Neoplatonism, and presented these ideas with a greater emphasis on the importance of science than anyone before her. In 400 Hypatia became the head of the Platonist school. Her accomplishments and discoveries far exceeded those of her contemporaries. She was an extraordinary woman, who had cultivated her mind far beyond any other woman. All accounts describe her as extremely dignified and virtuous. Even though she taught many prominent Christians, and she was greatly admired by many monks, some Christians of the time began to associate her with paganism because of her extraordinarily intelligence. She was soon to become the focus for riots involving Christians and non-Christians alike.

ALEXANDRIA REVIEW
March 415 Issue 75
AR: What kind of influence did your father have on your development in the field of mathematics?
H: My father aspired to immerse me in the knowledge of many areas of study, from mathematics and science to languages, arts, and the humanities. But he also made sure that I was a well-rounded child physically and intellectually. He raised me to believe that I could achieve any goal to which I set my mind.
AR:
Hypatia: Yes I agree. But a society dominated by men does not intimidate me. I have mastered many tasks that are thought to be purely male, such as swimming, rowing, horseback riding, speech, mountain climbing, and even traveling.
AR: Travel? Where have you traveled?
Hypatia: My father sent me to Athens when he thought I had learned as much as I could here in
Alexandria. He sent me to Athens first because it is thought to be the mathematical center of the world. I learned so much there and went on to travel throughout Europe for ten years. AR : And were you not afraid to travel without a male companion?

Hypatia was a Greek mathematician who lived in Alexandria, the center of Greek intellectual life. She was born there around 370 and was killed in March of 415. Hypatia was the first woman mathematician to have significantly contributed to mathematics. Here is an interview with her conducted shortly before her death.
Q. We hear that your father, Theon, is a distinguished mathematician and a philosopher. How has he influenced you?
A . My father has had a tremendous impact on my life as a mathematician and as a person. He guided me in every aspect of my life, from education to the betterment of my body and mind. Every day during my childhood, I performed several types of exercises in order to ensure a healthy body and an inquisitive mind. My father taught me about the different religions and taught me the power of
words. He shared his knowledge with me and inspired me to search for the answers to the unknown
especially in astronomy and astrology.

Hypatia of Alexandria
A Play in Three Acts
by Gerald Everett Jones
This stage play about the famous Hellenistic teacher Hypatia tells a story of civil unrest in fifth century Alexandria, Egypt. This doesn't sound like such an old story when you consider it's filled with riots, political corruption, racial persecution, the decline of the military establishment, economic depression, a perceived decline in moral values, and vicious religious politics.
You might say it's a cautionary tale for our times.
Hypatia was the last of a long line of philosophers to head the Library of Alexandria. She spoke out against the persecution of the city's Jews, became romantically linked with the powerful prefect of Rome, and ended up being hacked to death by a mob of Christian fanatics.
And somewhere, sometime no one can really prove when someone destroyed everything she ever wrote and most of of the other books she taught. [She has just learned that there will be rioting in the streets tonight, led by Cyril, Archibishop of Alexandria, and his band of fanatical monks, the Parabolani. Although her life is in danger, she resolves to deliver her usual lesson in mathematics.] LIGHTS UP on (HYPATIA, who stands CENTER STAGE FRONT, facing the audience. She plays to us as though we were her students. As a prop, she has a large cone, made of parchment. Behind her is a chalk board, which she uses to illustrate her talk.) (Draws on the board) Let us consider the parabola. Where do we find it in nature? (No response) Why, then, do we study the parabola? Do we wish to excel at sports? By improving our aim, can we succeed in smashing more heads than our poorly educated opponents? Or perhaps we can draw a comfortable income advising generals how to better position their weapons of war?

Hypatia of Alexandria

Translated by F. Lyra
Published by Harvard University Press Anyone interested in the classical world has heard of Hypatia of Alexandria, one of the most accomplished women of the classical age, indeed, of any age. She was extremely well educated, known for her prowess in math, astronomy, and philosophy, particularly. Living in Alexandria during the end of the fourth century, Hypatia is known primarily through the letters left from her student, Synesius. Unfortunately, history has erased much of her life; we know a few details of her life and death, but only enough to fascinate readers, not enough to satisfy. Dzielska's major claim is that Hypatia, a Greek pagan, supported the "wrong" Christian political faction and ended up dead because of it. The parallels with Socrates often make Hypatia the subject of scrutiny. Both were seen as dangerous by some elements within their local governments and both lived in some ways outside the status quo, holding beliefs that would be dangerous to some. Both were also killed - Socrates executed formally, and Hypatia torn to pieces by a raging crowd and the library burned. History has never been sure who exactly was behind Hypatia's death or if it was planned or just mass hysteria, but surviving texts claim that it at least had something to do with certain of the elements in the Alexandrian government. Why exactly they would be threatened by her and which faction exactly was behind the mob is unknown. In many cases, as Dzielska points out, we have evidence of individuals with whom she

Propoganda. It's a funny thing.
Some of those things people believe Nostrodamus said about Hitler and trot out as 'proof' of the accuracy of his prophecies are actually old WWII propoganda. Hitler had encouraged occultism in his own propoganda, and had cited occult and astrological writings to jutify the supernatural mandate of his Reich. The Allies propoganda push included printing up copies of Nostradamus with altered verses regarding 'Hister' and his 'prophecized' defeat. Nowadays these verses are still trotted out by those magicians among us who wish to 'prove' the legitimacy of Nostradomus, and by extension, their own superpowers. Propoganda, if applied judiciously, can keep the truth stained for a very long time. Hypatia of Alexandria would be an extraordinary woman in any age.
She was, arguably, the last truly illuminated mind of the classical age.
She was the head of the Library of Alexandria.
This would be like being the head of Harvard, the Louvre, and NASA all at once, but even bigger...
Not only was the Library a storehouse of knowledge, but it was also a school and a museum and a laboratory.
