Christiaan Huygens (April 14, 1629 - June 8, 1695) Born in The Hague in 1629, Christiaan Huygens was a famous Dutchman for his development of advanced pendulum clocks (1659). He also invented an improved type of 2-lense eyepieces (1703), now named after him, and constructed very long air telescopes of up to 250 feet focal length. With these, he made important discoveries such as Jupiter's equatorial bulge, the polar caps of and a dark surface feature, later named Syrtis Major, on Mars. He discovered Saturn's satellite Titan (March 25, 1655) and was the first to clearly see its rings and to explain their appearance over time (1655-59). In 1656 he independently discovered the Orion Nebula M42 and made detailed studies and sketches of this object, including the discovery of three stars of the Trapezium cluster. He visited London in 1665 and was made a member of the Royal Society. On invitation of the French King Louis XIV, he came to Paris in 1666 and became a founding member of the Academie Royale des Sciences (Royal Academy of Sciences) where he worked with G.D. Cassini

Christiaan Huygens The true inventor of the magic lantern. Though there is an almost ineradicable tradition to designate Athanasius Kircher as the inventor of the magic lantern, there are some good reasons to call this in question. The evidence for the inventorship of Kircher should be found in his book Ars Magna Lucis et Umbrae (The great science of light and dark). However, in the fist edition of his book, published in 1646, we find nothing on projecting lanterns. Nothing points to an arrangement with light source, slide and projection lens, in that order. The engravings on which the argumentation is based are taken from the second edition, which was printed in Amsterdam, 1671. At that time magic lanterns were described quite frequently. Christiaan Huygens De echte uitvinder van de toverlantaarn. Hoewel het een bijna onuitroeibare traditie is Athanasius Kircher te beschouwen als de uitvinder van de toverlantaarn, zijn er toch een aantal goede redenen om zijn kandidaatschap in twijfel te trekken. Het bewijs dat Kircher de uitvinder is, zou moeten worden gevonden in zijn boek Ars Magna Lucis et Umbrae (De grote wetenschap van licht en donker). In de eerste editie van zijn boek, gepubliceerd in 1646, treffen we echter niets aan op het gebied van projectielantaarns. Niets wijst op een samenstelling van lichtbron, lantaarnplaat en projectielens, in die volgorde. De gravures waar de argumentatie op gebaseerd is, komen voor in de tweede editie, die in 1671 in Amsterdam gedrukt werd. In die tijd werden toverlantaarns al zeer regelmatig beschreven.
