As a part of the education in the Artistic Faculty , mathematics was, right from the beginning, an integral part of university life in Vienna. As outstanding figure of this early time we must mention , who became later known, and famous, under the name of his origin, Regiomontanus . He was perhaps the leading mathematician of his time. For example, his trigonometric tables went with Christoph Columbus on his trip to the "new world". While there was originally one professor in mathematics, over the centuries the number of professors in mathematics at the University of Vienna grew gradually up to finally three at the end of the 19th century. In this time, precisely in the year 1876, the "Mathematisches Seminar" was founded, not least at the instigation of

The number of the transcript is given first, followed by the page number for that transcript. Thus 16-23 is a reference to page 23 of transcript 16. (The designation (PMC16) 23 appears at the bottom of that page.) The transcript number is not repeated when, for a given name, there are references to several pages of the same transcript. The transcripts are in numerical order. (The name of the person being interviewed is not indexed for that interview. The occurrences of Albert Tucker's name are indexed only for those interviews in which he did not take part.) A B C D ... Z A

ROBERT E. GREENWOOD
This is a written contribution, dated 5 September 1984, by Robert E. Greenwood. Graduate student life in Princeton Joe Daly was quite friendly with Carl Allendoerfer, who worked in mathematical analysis. Carl was at Haverford College; he co-authored a successful textbook with Cletus Oakley and later went to the University of Washington. Joe Daly married in the summer of 1937, I believe. He and his wife Charlotte lived in Penns Neck while Joe continued his studies at Princeton. All of us were friendly with John H.M. Olmsted. After his marriage he stayed in the Princeton area until he received a degree. He taught at several places in the Midwest. One of Alex Mood's friends was a man named Robert Singleton. Singleton did not stay at the Graduate College, and I did not know him well. Ralph Boas was at the Graduate College in the late '30s. It is likely that he was with the Institute rather than at Princeton. I knew him, but not well. Paul Erdos lived in Princeton during some of the 1938-39 academic yea r. I met him once or twice in the time I was at Princeton for my final Ph.D. examination. I have seen him and corresponded with him many times since then.

Dazed and perspiring, very uncomfortable, I picked up the receiver, and the somberthroaty voice of my friend , the topologist witold hurewicz, began to recite
    http://www.aulam.org/stanulam.htm
Appreciations Homepage Adam Ulam's Memoir Book Reviews ... About Stanislaw Ulam
About Stanislaw Ulam At the beginning of his Adventures of a Mathematician (2d ed., Berkeley, 1991), Stan Ulam retrieves a very early memory: "When I was four, I remember jumping around on an oriental rug looking down at its intricate patterns. I remember my father's towering figure standing beside me, and I noticed that he smiled. I felt, 'He smiles because he thinks I am childish, but I know these are curious patterns.' I did not think in those very words, but I am pretty certain that it was not a thought that came to me later. I definitely felt, 'I know something my father does not know. Perhaps I know better than my father.'" This fascination carried him through a long life that reached across continents, oceans and universities; and that spanned the end of the last European empire, two world wars, and the age of nuclear weapons, which his genius helped make possible. In its notes accompanying its catalog of the archive of his papers, the American Philosophical Society summed up his achievements: "Stanislaw Ulam was a gifted mathematician who, during the course of his career, made significant contributions to set theory, topology, ergodic theory, probability, cellular automata theory, the study of nonlinear processes, the function of real variables, mathematical logic, and number theory. Perhaps his greatest achievement was the deveopment of the Monte Carlo method for solving complex mathematical problems by electronic random sampling, but he made equally noteworthy contributions in hydrodynamics (three-dimensionnal fluid flow), the development of nuclear propulsion for space flight (Project Orion), and in fields as disparate as physics, biology and astronomy. Yet despite the breadth of his scholarship, Ulam is most often remembered for the central role he played in the early development of the American hydrogen bomb."

From: Stanislaw M. Ulam, Adventures of a Mathematician (Berkeley, U. C. Press, 1991):
"At twenty-five, I had established some results in measure theory, which soon became well-known [internationally]. these solved certain set theoretical problems attacked earlier by Hausdorff, Banach, Kuratowski, and others . . . . I was also working in topology, group theory and probability theory. "In 1934, the international situation was becoming ominous. Hitler had come to power in Germany. His influence was felt indirectly in Poland. There were increasing displays of inflamed nationalism, extreme rightist outbreaks and anti-Semitic demonstrations. "I did not consciously recognize these portents of things to come, but felt vaguely that if I was going to earn a living by myself and not continue indefinitely to be supported by my father, I must go abroad . . . . "With this in my pocket, I happily began preparations to return to Poland for the summer."
