June 14, 2002 Grace Hopper Project A couple of months ago, I had committed to help with a local community outreach program at the University of Michigan's College of Engineering. This program, known as the Grace Hopper Project , is sponsored by the Women in Science and Engineering Program at the University of Michigan, College of Engineering and the School of Information (my alma mater). Participants will be introduced by researchers and engineers to various fields in science and technology. They'll tour facilities and attend classes to learn about subjects ranging from radiation oncology to automotive engineering to virtual CAVE environments, and much more. I'll be busy all of next week teaching the internet/multimedia portion of this program. Hopefully, the Grace Hopper program will help high school students make more informed decisions about studying science and technology as they prepare for college. Speaking of college and career decisions, I've been struck in recent weeks by the memory of Robert Frost's famous poem Posted by samuel at June 14, 2002 07:26 AM

What is it?
The Grace Hopper Project is an exciting one week program designed for young women who will complete the 9th, 10th or 11th grade by June, 2003. The program explores computer technology by introducing students to advanced multimedia design and development; dynamic web programming; computer-assisted virtual environments; and both hardware and software life cycle management from initial conception/design to operation/support. Projects will focus on developing practical computer skills. Each day includes hands-on computer projects and opportunities to talk with women scientists and engineers, learn about careers of the future and have lots of fun exploring the UM campus and selected high technology sites. This project is sponsored by the Women in Science and Engineering Program at the University of Michigan, College of Engineering and the School of Information . What will I learn?

"Grace Murray Hopper"
by Joanna Mack '01 GA Times
January 2, 1992 Unfortunately, we have just been informed that Grace Murray Hopper died yesterday at the age of 85. Hopper was not only a mathematician, navy officer, and pioneer in data processing, but was also a respected woman who was an inspiration to all who knew her. Hopper has lead a very successful life and has achieved many awards because of her hard work. In her honor, we are printing once again our interview from two years ago in which we asked this mathematical legend to reflect upon her successful life.
Mathematician,
Computer Programmer Interview by Joanna Mack with Grace Murray Hopper on March 14, 1990 JM: I would like to thank you ahead of time for taking the time to talk with us about your life and successful career... GMH: My pleasure. I always like to tell the story of my life if it will inspire others in any way. JM: I would like to start by asking you to tell us a little about your childhood and if it had any influence on your career as a mathematician? GMH: Well, for the facts, I was born in New York City on December 9, 1906 into a very close-knit family. I lived with my parents [Walter and Mary] and my two younger siblings [Mary and Roger]. I must say that as a child I was very different from the other girls my age. I was never interested in girl-type activities and while other girls played with their dolls, I played with motors, things with moving parts, and sets to build houses, churches, and buildings. I did actually have a dollhouse but instead of playing with the dollhouse itself, I liked to make furniture and accessories for the house. I guess I have always been curious and on the more "technical" side. But I was not always only fond of math exclusivly, I actually enjoyed reading very much.

Captain Hopper's Association with the Town of Wolfeboro and Brewster Academy Captain Hopper was among a third generation of Murrays to have lived in Wolfeboro as a seasonal resident. Her brother, Dr. Roger F. Murray, an economist and former associate dean of the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University, was a full-time resident of Wolfeboro, as are other members of his family. Captain Hopper, who traveled extensively for NAVDAC, the Naval Automation Data Command, in Washington, had often stated that Wolfeboro was her second home, the place where she planned to retire, "if I ever retire." Captain Hopper maintained a lifelong passion for teaching, for advancing her own knowledge and then sharing it with others. She was very concerned that modern technology be used purposefully, that information be tapped intelligently and that solutions to world problems be approached both compassionately and rationally using technological tools. She was dedicated to transferring her knowledge and instilling her values in younger generations. Therefore, before her death she was most gracious in encouraging computer learning and a historical perspective at our school. She dazzled our students with her seriousness of purpose and her resilient, humorous and resourceful nature. It is not only "programming" that we want to teach here, but the human and the humane factors that go into decision making and problem solving. We want to create a learning program worthy of its new name.

Grace Hopper and Cobol
Grace Hopper made many important contribution to the development of modern computing system. Her worked was concerned with the development of compilers In my essay I am going to state the many accomplishment of Grace Hopper.
Grace Hopper was born on December 9, 1906 in New York City. She went to Yale University where she received an Ph.D in mathematics. Her work led to the first practical compiler for modern computers, she helped tp invent the Cobol programming language, a computer language used by many businesses. She joined the Naval Reserves in 1943 as Rear Admiral. She invented the language APT and verified the language of Cobol. In 1969, Grace Hopper was named the first the computer science "Man of the Year" by the Data Processing Management Association. After World War II she joinedthe U.S. Navy Reserves and worked on the development of the Univac computer project for the use in the private sectors. In 1986, she retired from the U.S. Navy. She recieved the National Medal of Technology in 1991, the nation's highest honor in engineering and technology. Grace Hopper died on January 1, 1993.
Grace Hopper has affected our lives, beacuse many businesses use Cobol now, and also many school teach this form of programming. I think that next year I will learn cobol in school. I am very interested on how it works.

Taming KULL the Conquerer: Innovative CS Development in a 3D, Parallel Multi-Physics Application The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing 2002 is the fourth in a series of conferences designed to bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront. Presenters are leaders in their respective fields, representing industrial, academic and government communities. Leading researchers present their current work, while special sessions focus on the role of women in today's technology fields. Past Grace Hopper Celebrations have resulted in collaborative proposals, networking and mentoring for junior women, and increased visibility for the contributions of women in computing. This year's theme, "Ubiquity," focuses on the ubiquity of the impact of computers on our daily lives and the ubiquity of the impact women are making on this technical force.
