HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Hilbert, David German mathematician, philosopher, and physicist whose work was fundamental to 20th-century mathematics. He founded the formalist school with Grundlagen der Geometrie/Foundations of Geometry (1899), which was based on his idea of postulates. Hilbert attempted to put mathematics on a logical foundation through defining it in terms of a number of basic principles, which Kurt Gdel later showed to be impossible. In 1900 Hilbert proposed a set of 23 problems for future mathematicians to solve, and gave 20 axioms to provide a logical basis for Euclidean geometry.

Welcome to my page My name is David Hilbert and I am an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Illinois at Chicago . My main areas of research are color, philosophy of perception, and philosophy of mind. I also have interests in philosophy of biology, early modern philosophy (especially Berkeley) and epistemology. There are a few preprints available via the papers link above. Color
The color link above will take you to some information and links regarding color in philosophy and science. Included is a glossary of color science and a reasonably complete bibliography of philosophical work on color through 1997. Berkeley
The Berkeley link above will take you to my Images of Berkeley page which contains some scanned images relating to the Irish philosopher George Berkeley. I have also included some of Berkeley's poetry. Classes

On defining primitives I do not want to presuppose anything as known. I see in my explanation in section 1 the definition of the concepts point, straight line and plane, if one adds to these all the axioms of groups i-v as characteristics. If one is looking for other definitions of point, perhaps by means of paraphrase in terms of extensionless, etc., then, of course, I would most decidedly have to oppose such an enterprise. One is then looking for something that can never be found, for there is nothing there, and everything gets lost, becomes confused and vague, and degenerates into a game of hide and seek. David Hilbert

Presocratic philosopher and mathematician who emphasized the use of empirical methods in pursuit of knowledge. Although his efforts to trisect the angle geometrically failed, they led Hippias to the discovery of the quadratrix, a curve satisfying the modern algebraic formula y = x tan[ p y/2a] , whose construction would render trisection of acute angles unproblematic.

    Hilbert's Problems

A set of (originally) unsolved problems in mathematics proposed by Hilbert Of the 23 total, ten were presented at the Second International Congress in Paris on August 8, 1900. Furthermore, the final list of 23 problems omitted one additional problem on proof theory (Thiele 2001). Hilbert's problems were designed to serve as examples for the kinds of problems whose solutions would lead to the furthering of disciplines in mathematics, and are summarized in the following list.
1a. Is there a transfinite number between that of a denumerable set and the numbers of the continuum ? This question was answered by and Cohen to the effect that the answer depends on the particular version of set theory assumed.
1b. Can the continuum of numbers be considered a well ordered set ? This question is related to Zermelo's axiom of choice . In 1963, the axiom of choice was demonstrated to be independent of all other axioms in set theory , so there appears to be no universally valid solution to this question either.
    2. Can it be proven that the
