Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
Some suggestions on the historical perspective might be:
(a) Any wars etc.
(b) Scientific breakthroughs of the time
(c) Major discoveries of the time
(d) How did this mathematician change history etc.

    Jakob Nielsen papirer
    Overordnet beskrivelse af samlingen
    Kort beskrivelse:
    Klausuler:
    Ingen.

General, short description of the collection
    A short description:
This collection of Jakob Nielsen papers consists mainly of reprints, which Nielsen has received from other scientists and sorted by authors. In addition to the reprints there is other material from some of the persons, i.e. letters, manuscripts, applications for positions etc. All the material is from the period around 1890-1959 and the reprints are in many different languages. However, the additional material is mainly in Danish or German.
    Size:
The collection is contained in 79 archival boxes of which the first 25 are standard boxes while the rest are Nielsen's original boxes.
    Handed over:
The collection was located in the basement of the mathematical library in the E block of the H. C. Ørsted Institute in the fall of 1996. It is not known when and how it was put here. Photocopies of material from the Staatsarchiv Hamburg was added to box 10 in July 1999.

    Border 100 Rally
2nd/3rd May 1999 -Welsh Border MC Top road rally stars of the Seventies and early Eighties, Derwyn Evans/John Furniss proved they had lost none of their skills by taking victory on their home event, the Border 100, on Saturday night. Despite not being included in any championships the rally attracted an over subscribed entry of sixty cars. Crews were faced with a superb 100 mile route based on the small Montgomeryshire town of Llanfyllin. Martin and Gordon Bradley were in problems immediately as they discovered an oil leak on their Escort just prior to their start time - they rectified the problem but beginning the event 25 minutes late they were forced to cut route to remain inside their maximum lateness. Jon Gwilym/Owen Dodd had a short event, a wheel breaking on the rally's first white, throwing their Escort into a tree. Moonbeam winners Adrian Hodgson/Sean Caddick were another crew not to make the Petrol halt, the alternator on the Peugeot 205 failing on Section Two. At the halfway halt the lead was held by top seeds Phil Turner/Neil Spiers, they were almost two minutes ahead of the eventual winners. Despite a failing clutch on their Escort they maintained this lead to within a mile of the finish, however they then got lost in the lanes surrounding Trefonen, dropping six minutes and five places as a result. It was therefore left for Evans/Furniss to take the win - a popular victory on home ground. Second place fell to the top Semi-Expert crew, Dave Stephens/Keith Jones - the driver being another competitor from the glory days of road rallying making a return to the sport. Kevin Nunns/Dave Evison were third in their Corolla, with Adrian Higman/Cyril Jones fourth in their Maestro. Higman had contemplated retirement at Petrol, the Maestro having lost virtually all its brakes; however he managed to salvage a set of pads from a similar car at the halfway venue, these allowed him to complete the route.

    57. Pacemaker Rally 1999
However they were only four seconds in front of the MG Maestro of Adrian higman/PaulMiddleton. Second novice were graham Holmes/graham Buckley.
    http://www.welshrallying.co.uk/pace99.htm
    Pacemaker Rally
10th/11th July 1999 - Knighton MC Kevin Hesketh/Andy Moss took their maiden victory on the their home ground, the Shropshire lanes bordering Wales, on the Pacemakers Novices Rally on Saturday night. The well received Knighton MC event based itself at Bishop's Castle and used a 90 mile route with no petrol halt. There were six standard sections, but for the top crews the rally was decided on the 13 mile fourth section. Hesketh/Moss were on the pace all night and duly took fastest time on the decisive section. However they were only four seconds in front of the MG Maestro of Adrian Higman/Paul Middleton. Top seeds Andy Sheppard/Patrick Walsh were third; they'd lost their position as first car on the road after wrong slotting on the first section and were thus delayed by previous runners' dust on the tie decider. Dave Stephens/Keith Jones came home fourth to complete the role of top runners, as the top four crews were three minutes clear of the rest of the field. Fifth place and top Semi-Expert went to the Audi 80 Quattro of Steve Herbert/Nigel Roberts, who were four minutes clear of their nearest class rivals, Howard Dray/Martin Jones, who were tenth. Stephen Davies/Ben Innes would have taken the class win but picked up a fail for booking in early on the second section. The top novices were Glyn Price/Brian Jones, who finished ninth overall. Second novice were Graham Holmes/Graham Buckley. David Allcock/Dap Jones were third novices, like Davies/Inns they could have won their class but they missed a Passage Control and had a fail added to their penalties. Having made the journey from Lampeter Huw James/Aneurin James were sixth overall and took the Standard Production Award in their Ford Fiesta.
