Ross, Editorial Director BAPTISTS OF TEXAS COMMITTED TO THE BIBLE When can one have a rigid creed or an "unalterable" statement of faith, yet at the same time claim he has "no creed but the Bible" Answer When one is affluent, and is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas Texas entrepreneur and Baptist philanthropist, John F. Baugh of Houston, says he is "neither a theologian nor a scholar" ( The Battle for Baptist Integrity by John Baugh, page viii). And though Mr. Baugh claims no creed but the Bible, he insists on the " unaltered " 1963 Baptist Faith and Message as the definitive source of the " doctrines and tenets " of the Bible for the Baptist General Convention of Texas. In fact, according to the newsletter of Mr. Baugh's "Texas Baptists Committed" associates, one is " not a Baptist " if he does not affirm the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message in contrast to the revised Baptist Faith and Message of 2000 Mr. Baugh, though neither a theologian nor scholar, is a very wealthy man. And to some people, wealth is more significant and influential than either theology or scholarship. Some wonder if among many in the Baptist General Convention of Texas Mr. Baugh's wealth takes precedence over both theology and scholarship combined. Joslyn Art Museum John and Alan McDonald and Herschel Elarth View from the east (with Foster addition to the rightor north) Dedicated to George Joslyn, the building faces downtown, the site of Joslyn's empire. The building is clad with Georgia Pink (Etowah Fleuri) marbleoverlaying brick masonry. Although the original design was a traditional Beaux-Arts classical building, even as the structure was being built, modifications transformed the museum into a "Moderne" style. Many of these changes were in architectural details. Some decoration was eliminated from the original design, other decoration transformed so that the museum is now seen as a classic of American Art Deco. (See the thunderbird capitals below.) Two architects are credited with this change: indirectly, Bertram Goodhue, the influential architect of the Nebraska State Capitol , and directly, Herschel Elarth, the design architect who was responsible for the actual decorative alterations. In addition, the sculptor, John David Brcin, a Serb born in Croatia, designed exterior sculptural decoration following a program conceived by Hartley Burr Alexander.

The reliefs panels, upper corners of the Joslyn Art Museum John David Brcin Brcin had contracted with the architects of the museum for sculpture of various types, in particular, two free-standing monumental equestrian statues for the main entrance, a long relief panel over the main entrance, panels for the east doors (see door panel ), and 8 corner panels, 7 of which are included below. Designs for the equestrian statues and entrance relief panel were rejected, the door designs had to be reworked, and the subjects for the corner relief panels were in part determined by Hartley Burr Alexander, not the sculptor. According to Graham W. J. Beal, the final panels reflect "Alexander's view of cultural development in America[;] the eight panels were divided equally between the Native American and the European contributions" (37). Since panels are located on the corners, the arrangement attempts to coordinate the panels thematically; to some extent, then, the corner panels can be viewed as a pair. However, the arrangement does separate the contributions of white settlers, occupying the panels on the eastern half of the building, from those representing Indian themes on the western half. Dissemination of Intelligence (or Distribution of News) The two panels relating to the career of George Joslyn as a newspaper journalist are located at the two corners of the east or main facade. Standing before a personified Intelligence, seated at the left, are figures holding signs for travela boat, train, and plane. Two other figures hold symbols for the telegraph and radio.

Music was an important part of his upbringing, this became evident when he became a bandboy with the Hanoverian Guards. Later on he was either inducted or a volunteer in the military where he served only briefly. Due to his delicate health he discovered he was unsuited for army life and his father helped him to leave Germany for England in 1757 where he took up residence. Different names were suggested, including his own name, "Herschel". He, however, wanted to call the new planet "Georgium Sidus," after his new patron, George Ill.
