An understanding of the influence Hegel had on Marx and Engels, and their opinions of Hegel: Engels wrote in his review of Marx's The Critique of Political Economy "The Hegelian method, on the other hand, was in its existing form quite inapplicable. It was essentially idealist and the main point in this case was the elaboration of a world outlook that was more materialist than any previous one. Give to Collection The Ophthalmoscope and Hermann von Helmholtz Hermann von Helmholtz was born in 1821 in Pottsdam, Germany. He was one of the great scientific minds of the 19th century whose accomplishments were in both medicine and science. In 1850 Helmholtz prepared an experiment for his physiology students to demonstrate the law of conservation of energy. For the experiment Helmholtz constructed a crude instrument made of cardboard, glue and microscope glass plates. This device was the predecessor of the ophthalmoscope used today. Helmholtz had many great accomplishments other than the ophthalmoscope, including his mastery and definition of physiological optics, theory of heat and energy, theories of hearing and the phenomenon of color and accommodation. Helmholtz earned many significant awards for his work, including being awarded the addition of the suffix "von" to his name. This honor, which he received from Kaiser Wilhem I, is similar to that of being knighted and one that can be inherited by descendants. Special thanks for this exhibit go to Spencer E. Sherman, MD.

Hermann von Helmholtz Helmholtzens Forschungsgebiet reichte von der Medizin über die Physik und Mathematik bis zur Psychologie, Musik und Philosophie. Seinc Stoffwechseluntersuchungen führten ihn zur Formulierung des Gesetzes ,,Über die Erhaltung der Kraft". Helmholtz bestimmte als erster die Wellenlängen des ultravioletten Lichtes und errechnete die Leistungsgrenze des Lichtmikroskops. Seine ,,Drei-Komponenten-Farbtheorie" erhielt im Zeitalter des Farbfernsehens eine neue Bedeutung. Bei seinen Arbeiten zur Akustik entstand die Theorie der Luftgeschwindigkeit in offenen Röhren. Richtungweisend waren seine Forschungen zur Hydrodynamik, zur Theorie der Elektrodynamik und zur Thermodynamik (mathematische Formulierung des 1. Hauptsatzes). Hermann von Helmholtz, "der Vollender der klassischen Physik", gilt als maßgebender Vertreter einer Naturwissenschaft, welche Medizin, Physik und Chemie zu einem interdisziplinären Netzwerk verknüpft. Er ist Gründungsvater der modernen Physik in Theorie, Experiment und hochtechnologischer Anwendung. Hermann von Helmholtz starb am 8. September l894 in Berlin-Charlottenburg.
