"Where do we come from? How did the universe begin? Why is the universe the way it is? How will it end? "All my life, I have been fascinated by the big questions that face us, and have tried to find scientific answers to them. If, like me, you have looked at the stars, and tried to make sense of what you see, you too have started to wonder what makes the universe exist. The questions are clear, and deceptively simple. But the answers have always seemed well beyond our reach. Until now. "The ideas which had grown over two thousand years of observation have had to be radically revised. In less than a hundred years, we have found a new way to think of ourselves. From sitting at the center of the universe, we now find ourselves orbiting an average-sized sun, which is just one of millions of stars in our own Milky Way galaxy. And our galaxy itself is just one of billions of galaxies, in a universe that is infinite and expanding. But this is far from the end of a long history of inquiry. Huge questions remain to be answered, before we can hope to have a complete picture of the universe we live in. "I want you to share my excitement at the discoveries, past and present, which have revolutionized the way we think. From the Big Bang to black holes, from dark matter to a possible Big Crunch, our image of the universe today is full of strange sounding ideas, and remarkable truths. The story of how we arrived at this picture is the story of learning to understand what we see."

While there are dozens of other sites on the web devoted to Stephen Hawking's scientific achievements, I am unaware of a single site (aside from this one) devoted to his career as a lyrical terrorist. Despite three critically acclaimed albums and nearly ten years on the mic, Stephen Hawking remains virtually unknown as a musician. Well to hell with that noize, this is a new millenium and my boy MC Hawking is gonna be crazy large! So check out the crib.
[Inhalt] [Seite: Seite 4

Stephen Hawking rettet die Menschheit
Goedart Palm

Stephen Hawking on black holes, unified field theory, and Marilyn Monroe.

Stephen Hawking seemed slightly worse, as always. It is a miracle that he has clung to life for over 20 years with Lou Gehrig’s disease. Each time I see him I feel that this will be the last, that he cannot hold on to such a thin thread for much longer. Hawking turned 60 in January. Over the course of his brilliant career, he has worked out many of the basics of black hole physics, including, most strikingly, his prediction that black holes aren’t entirely black. Instead, if they have masses equivalent to a mountain’s, they radiate particles of all kinds. Smaller holes would disappear in a fizz of radiation a signature that astronomers have searched for but so far not found. The enormous success of Hawking’s 1988 book, A Brief History of Time , has made him a curious kind of cultural icon. He wonders how many of the starlets and rock stars who mentioned the book on talk shows actually read it. With his latest book

Dear friends,
HAPPY NEW YEAR
Following is an email to Dr. Stephen Hawking mentioning what he and Albert einstein missed in postulating a unified theory with an equation that predicts observations.
Despite being complete in itself Albert einstein';s present formula is just half (not a total one in terms of solving unsolved questions of cosmology) of a total formula.Only the first and the other half togather will describe a unified theory.
With respect to both the geniuses we here exactly know what hindred and obsructed Mr. Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein to posulate unified theory and equate its formula (the other half, other part, concluding part).
THE OTHER HALF
Respected sir,
We are a group of academicians with science background involved in understanding cosmology.we wish to express our feelings about.
We found it to our amazement that having scrutinized and made a comparative study of all the partial theories you have almost postulated the unified theory but could not (or didn’t) postulate and declare it.As you have said:"I will have succeeded in my ambitions to discover how the Universe began; but I won't know why."
We can see two reasons to it.

31. Stephen Hawking's Universe

A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME
Stephen W. Hawking Our Picture of the Universe

Any physical theory is always provisional, in the sense that it is only a hypothesis: you can never prove it. No matter how many times the results of experiments agree with some theory, you can never be sure that the next time the result will not contradict the theory. On the other hand, you can disprove a theory by finding even a single observation that disagrees with the predictions of the theory... Each time new experiments are observed to agree with the predictions the theory survives, and our confidence in it is increased; but if ever a new observation is found to disagree, we have to abandon or modify the theory.
Today scientists describe the universe in terms of two basic partial theories - the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics... The general theory of relativity describes the force of gravity and the large-scale structure of the universe, that is, the structure on scales from only a few miles to as large as a million million million million (1 with twenty-four zeros after it) miles, the size of the observable universe. Quantum mechanics, on the other hands, deals with phenomena on extremely small scales, such as a millionth of a millionth of an inch. Unfortunately, however, these two theories are known to be inconsistent with each other - they cannot both be correct.
The discovery of a complete unified theory, therefore, may not aid the survival of our species. It may not even affect our life-style. But ever since the dawn of civilization, people have not been content to see events as unconnected and inexplicable. They have craved an understanding of the underlying order in the world. Today we still yearn to know why we are here and where we came from. Humanity's deepest desire for knowledge is justification enough for our continuing quest. And our goal is nothing less than a complete description of the universe we live in.

Quantum cosmology and eternal inflation
Author: Alexander Vilenkin
Comments: To appear in "The Future of Theoretical Physics and Cosmology", proceedings of the conference in honor of Stephen Hawking's 60'th birthday
This contribution consists of two parts. In the first part, I review the tunneling approach to quantum cosmology and comment on the alternative approaches. In the second part, I discuss the relation between quantum cosmology and eternal inflation. In particular, I discuss whether or not we need quantum cosmology in the light of eternal inflation, and whether or not quantum cosmology makes any testable predictions.

Quantum mechanically, black holes radiate, with a radiation known as Hawking radiation, after the British physicist Stephen Hawking who first proposed it. The animation at top left cartoons the Hawking radiation from a black hole of the size shown at bottom left. The blobs are supposed to be individual photons. Notice, first, that the photons have `sizes' (wavelengths) comparable to the size of the black hole, and, second, that the Hawking radiation is not very bright - the black hole emits roughly one photon every light crossing time of the black hole. So a black hole observed by its Hawking radiation looks fuzzy, a quantum mechanical object. This is one animation that I did not compute mathematically. How do you draw a quantum mechanical object, whose appearance depends not only on the object but also on the way the observer chooses to observe it? I figured my impressionism was good enough here. Hawking radiation has a blackbody (Planck) spectrum with a temperature T given by kT g c c r s where k is Boltzmann's constant , hbar = h , and g r s is the surface gravity at the horizon, the

Astrophysicist Stephen Hawking Astrophysicist Stephen Hawking is considered the "Einstein of our time" by many scientists. His contributions to understanding the universe have been incredible. Much of what we now know about black holes and white dwarfs stems from the mathematics of Hawking. For those interested in Hawking's work in theoretical physics and astronomy, he has written about his search for scientific truth in his book, A Brief History of Time
According to press reports, on the topic of human cloning, he had this to say: The fuss about cloning is rather silly, I can't see any essential distinction between cloning and producing brothers and sisters in the time-honored way ." - Stephen Hawking Register with the Human Cloning Foundation!

06:03 PM May. 21, 1997 PT Earlier this week, Hawking and some colleagues at Cambridge University in the UK unveiled the world's first supercomputer dedicated exclusively to cosmological research. COSMOS, a Silicon Graphics Origin2000 symmetrical multiprocessor computer, employs 32 RS10000 processors and 8 GB of main memory. Hawking said the high-powered supercomputer was needed because advances in cosmological theory are so complex.

"The calculations involved are so enormous they require a state-of-the-art machine," Hawking said, and questioned whether the supercomputer would one day eliminate theoretical physics by solving all the complex problems that face the field today. COSMOS will be used by Hawking and astrophysicists at the universities of Cardiff, Durham, Oxford, and Sussex, as well as those at the Imperial College in London and the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh.
