Halley, Edmond
English atronomer who not only identified 1705 the comet that was later to be known by his name, but also compiled a star catalogue, detected the proper motion of stars, using historical records, and began a line of research that - after his death - resulted in a reasonably accurate calculation of the astronomical unit.
Halley calculated that the cometary sightings reported in 1456, 1531, 1607, and 1682 all represented reappearances of the same comet. He reasoned that the comet would follow a parabolic path and announced 1705 that it would reappear 1758.
When it did, public acclaim for the astronomer was such that his name was irrevocably attached to it.
Halley was also a pioneer geophysicist and meteorologist and worked in many other fields, including mathematics. He became the second Astronomer Royal 1720. He was a friend of Isaac Newton, whose Principia he financed.
Halley was born near London and studied at Oxford but left without taking a degree. He spent 1676-78 on the S Atlantic island of St Helena, charting the stars of the southern hemisphere. He became professor of geometry at Oxford 1703.

Edmond Halley's Greatest Discoveries
Explanation:
Sir Edmond Halley was quite a discoverer. Born in 1656, he computed in 1705 that a bright comet was periodic and would make another appearance in 1758. The comet appeared as predicted and is now known as Comet Halley . Unfortunately, Halley died in 1742 and never saw his prediction come true. In 1716 Halley proposed two types of diving bells that would enable people to explore the deep sea. Halley pioneered our understanding of trade winds, tides, cartography, naval navigation, mortality tables, and stellar proper motions. Halley (incorrectly) proposed that the Earth was made of concentric spheres the size of the inner planets each of which might contain life. Perhaps Halley's greatest discovery, however, was that his contemporary Isaac Newton had discovered a powerful mathematical formulation of gravity.

Edmond Halley (October 29, 1656 - January 14, 1742)
Edmond Halley was born in Hagerston, Middlesex, England (near London) as son of a wealthy merchant, salter and soapmaker. His birth date is somewhat uncertain because it is not known if at that time in his village the Gregorian or the julian calendar was in use. There's also some dispute over the year. He got educated at Oxford and studied at Oxford University, Queen's College, 1673-6. He worked with John Flamsteed , the Astronomer Royal in 1675-6 both at Oxford and Greenwich, and observed e.g. the occultation of Mars by the Moon on August 21, 1676. In November 1676, he gave up his studies without final exam, and sailed to St. Helena on the southern hemisphere, in order to compile a catalogue of southern stars. The reasons for this are unknown, but it may be that he wanted to complement Flamsteed's mapping of the northern celestial hemisphere on the southern skies. Anyway, he compiled this catalog, the first of the southern skies which he published on his return to England in 1678, and observed the Mercury transit on November 7, 1677. On his return, Halley was elected to the Royal Society on November 30, 1678, and King Charles II graduated him by mandate in 1679. That year, he was sent to Danzig to visit

Edmond Halley, b. Nov. 8 (Oct. 29, O.S.), 1656, d. Jan. 14, 1742, was an English astronomer who discovered the proper motion of stars and the periodicity of comets. His activities also ranged from studying archaeology to serving as deputy comptroller of the mint at Chester. He was an integral part of the English scientific community at the height of its creativity. A graduate of Oxford, he became a member of the Royal Society at the age of 22. From the island of Saint Helena, he catalogued (1676-78) the positions of about 350 Southern Hemisphere stars and observed a transit of Mercury; he urged that the latter phenomenon and future transits of Venus be used to determine the distance of the Sun. He worked out a theory of cometary orbits, concluded that the comet of 1682 (which still bears his name) was periodic, and correctly predicted that it would return in 76 years. In 1710, comparing current star positions with those listed in Ptolemy's catalog, he deduced that the stars must have a slight motion of their own, and he detected this proper motion in three stars. Halley was appointed Savilian professor of geometry at Oxford in 1704, and in 1720 he succeeded

    Sir Edmond Halley
Sir Edmond Halley (1656 - 1742) was an English astronomer who is best known for his study of comets , and the discovery that certain comets observed many years apart appeared to travel along similar orbits . In particular, he noticed that the comets of 1531, 1607, and 1682 seemed similar and he hypothesized that they were in fact the same comet. He predicted that the comet would return in 1758; when it was observed as predicted, the comet was named Halley's Comet in his honor. Show me a printable version of this page.

    Edmond Halley (1656 - 1742)
The English astronomer and mathematician was the first to calculate the orbit of the comet later named after him. He also played a central role in the publication of Newton's Principia. While at Oxford, Halley was introduced to John Flamsteed, the astronomer royal. The relationship developed and, influenced by Flamsteed's project to compile a catalogue of northern stars, Halley proposed to do the same for the Southern Hemisphere. By the time he returned home in January 1678, he had recorded the celestial longitudes and latitudes of 341 stars and observed a transit of Mercury across the Sun's disk. Halley's star catalogue, published in 1678, was the first to contain telescopically determined locations of southern stars and that year he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. Along with the inventor and microscopist Robert Hooke, Sir Christopher Wren and Sir Isaac Newton, Halley was trying to develop a mechanical explanation for planetary motion. Although progress had been made, Hooke and Halley were not able to deduce a theoretical orbit that would match the observed planetary motions. However, Newton was already there: the orbit would be an ellipse, and Newton expanded his studies on celestial mechanics in his famous work, the Principia. The Royal Society charged Halley with the business of producing the book, which was published in 1687.
