Philip Hall 's father was George Hall and his mother was Mary Laura Sayers. They were not married and George left without making any provision for Laura or their newly born son Philip. Laura called herself Mrs Hall and she brought Philip up in her parents home in Hampstead, London until he was seven years old. At the time Philip was born Laura was employed as dressmaker as was her twin sister Lois, and also her two elder sisters, who were also twins, Ada and Ethel. In 1909, while living in his grandfather Joseph Sayers' house, Philip entered New End Primary School. In 1910 Laura, along with her three sisters, bought a house in Well Walk which they ran as a boarding house. Philip attended Sunday School and was baptised in 1911. He excelled at his Primary School and in 1915 he won a scholarship to Christ's Hospital West Horsham. This was a boarding school for children of ability whose parents were not able to afford the normal boarding school fees. Hall entered Christ's Hospital in May 1915 at age eleven. Although these were the years of World War I, Hall was too young to be affected by the war, other than serving in the Officer's Training Corps. It was at Christ's Hospital that Hall came to love mathematics. He was fortunate to have teachers who were both accomplished mathematicians and also able to transmit their enjoyment of the subject. It was not only mathematics in which he excelled, winning the Gold Medal in his final year, but also in English winning a medal for the best English essay. Hall was House Captain in 1921-22, his final year at Christ's Hospital, and his popularity says much about his character [3]:-

http://www.newcriterion.com/archive/04/feb86/philip.html
Philip Larkin 1922-1985
by Donald Hall U Times Literary Supplement almost a decade ago. It begins: I work all day, and get half drunk at night.
Waking at four to soundless dark, I stare.
In time the curtain-edges will grow light.
Unresting death, a whole day nearer now,
Making all thought impossible but how
And where and when I shall myself die.
The Less Deceived announced Philip Larkin in 1955. As a young man he had published The North Ship , poems lyrical and Yeatsian and not yet Larkinesque. The early work resembled other young Englishmen: neo-Romantic, even a bit wet Lucky Jim The Less Deceived was a small-press book—published by George Hartley who ran the Marvell Press and edited Listen , the best literary magazine in its time—it was published with a list of subscribers which included almost all English poets under forty: Amis, Bergonzi, Boyars, Brownjohn, Conquest, Davie, Enright, Hamburger, Hill, Jennings, MacBeth, Murphy, Thwaite, Tomlinson, Wain. (Thom Gunn was in California; Ted Hughes was not yet Ted Hughes.) And there were dons: Bateson, Dobree, Dodsworth, Fraser, Kermode, Leishmann. It was not long before Larkin became a popular poet in England, second only to Betjeman in public affection. When a good poet becomes popular there is always some silly reason as well as recognition of excellence. Dylan Thomas became a bestseller in this country—surely the obscurest poet ever to sell ten thousand copies—because tales of drunkenness and irreverence sold copies. With Robert Frost, the carefully cultivated rural manner—gussied up by the Luce publications until he resembled Scattergood Baines—sold copies and had little to do with the real man.

Philip A. Hall
(click on thumbnails to enlarge) Date of birth:
Wicket keeper.
History: Phillip started his career with local rivals Clitheroe where he was a member of the Youth League winning teams of 1968, 1972 and 1974. In June of 1981 whilst 'keeping for Clitheroe 1st XI, Phillip was hit in the eye, displacing the retina. After a week in hospital he was discharged and returned on the 11th July in the second XI where he took 5 catches and regained his place in the first team. He was a key member of the Clitheroe double winning side of 1986 and Ramsbottom Cup winners in 1987 and 1988 and joined Wanderers in 1990. He has represented the Ribblesdale League at all levels and took the Senior League wicket-keeping awards in 1990 and 1992 Phillip took a break from cricket between 1993 and 1998 to look after his children but was welcomed back to the club in 1999 and has proved to be as reliable and consistent as ever. Phil's main regret is that his father never saw him play for Ribblesdale.
Personal best: 1975 (Lawrenson Cup first round) - Blackburn Northern 113 all out, Clitheroe 13-5 (Opening bat PA Hall not out) - Phillip carried his bat to finish with 53 not out as Clitheroe won the match at 117-9!

Since 1996 Infact has been exposing corporate influence-peddlers like Philip Morris, Columbia/HCA Healthcare, Dow Chemical, Waste Management, and RJR Nabisco In 1996 and 1997 Philip Morris Dow Chemical Waste Management , Columbia/HCA (now HCA) and RJR Nabisco were inducted into Infact's Hall of Shame for exerting undue influence over political decisionmaking and putting public health at risk. The Hall of Shame documents how each of these corporations has disregarded public opinion and manipulated our democratic ideals for private gain, with devastating consequences for public health and well-being. Infact is directly challenging the Hall of Shame corporations and their political allies, widely exposing corporate manipulation of public policy and its harmful consequences, and promoting a democratic standard of corporate and political conduct. We are reaching out to the millions of people who are concerned about the decay of our democracy, calling on you to join Infact to help move corporations out of public policy. Who is with us? In a recent poll conducted for Infact, two-thirds (67%) of the US public believe that the political influence of giant corporations such as tobacco companies weakens our democracy.

Hard Eight
*** 1/2 (R) Sydney: Philip Baker Hall
John: John C. Reilly
Clementine: Gwyneth Paltrow
Jimmy: Samuel L. Jackson Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson . Running time: 93 minutes. Rated R (for strong language, some violence and sexuality). By Roger Ebert The man's face is sad and lined, and he lights cigarettes as if he's been living in casinos for centuries. He has a deep, precise voice: We get a quick impression that he knows what he thinks and says what be believes. His name is Sydney, and he has found an unshaven young bum dozing against the wall of a coffee shop and offered him a cup of coffee and a cigarette. Why? The answer is the engine behind the first half of ``Hard Eight.'' I am not sure it is ever fully answered, or needs to be. Sydney (Philip Baker Hall) is a man who has been gambling for a long time, and knows a lot about the subject, and shares his knowledge with the kid becausewell, maybe just because he has it to share. The kid is named John (John C. Reilly). He needs $6,000 to bury his mother and has lost everything. Step by step, Sydney teaches him some ropes, like how to start with $150 and recycle it through the casino cashier cages until he seems to have spent $2,000 in the casino, and is given a free room. This opening sequence is quietly fascinating: I like movies that show me precisely how to get away with something. At the end of the process, it's funny how John, now that he's in his own room, becomes the genial host. ``Free movies on TV?'' he asks Sydney. ``Drink from the mini-bar?''
