Fields Medal
Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

    2. Alexander Grothendieck, arguably the most influential mathematician of the second half of the twentieth century, is the German-born son of a Russian Jewish father and a German-Jewish mother. This is according to a recent memoir in the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society (Vol. 38, No. 4, 2001, pp. 389-408) written by his close acquaintance, the mathematician Pierre Cartier. (See http://modular.fas.harvard.edu/sga/from_grothendieck.pdf .) Cartier's account is in substantial agreement with Thomas Drucker's earlier account in Notable Twentieth-Century Scientists, edited by Emily McMurray (Gale Research, Detroit, 1995, pp.821-823). Following the rise of Hitler, the family fled from Germany to France. Although Grothendieck's father, whose name was Morris (or, in some accounts, Alexander) Shapiro, was deported and murdered at Auschwitz, Grothendieck and his mother found refuge in the mountains of south-central France, where he was one of several thousand Jewish children sheltered by the French Protestants of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon. (According to Cartier, Grothendieck's mother's maiden name was Hanka Grothendieck. But according to the second reference cited above, "Grothendieck" was the name of a governess who cared for Alexander between 1929 and 1939. Both references cite Grothendieck as the source of their accounts.)

    30. Reminiscências Pessoais De Minha Atuação Enquanto Presidente
Translate this page Na Matemática, tínhamos muitos visitantes.

In stock Dessins d’Enfants are combinatorial objects, namely drawings with vertices and edges on topological surfaces. Their interest lies in their relation with the set of algebraic curves defined over the closure of the rationals, and the corresponding action of the absolute Galois group on them. The study of this group via such realted combinatorial methods as its action on the Dessins and on certain fundamental groups of moduli spaces was initiated by Alexander Grothendieck in his unpublished Esquisse d’un Programme, and developed by many of the mathematicians who have contributed to this volume. The various articles here unite all of the basics of the subject as well as the most recent advances. Researchers in number theory, algebraic geometry or related areas of group theory will find much of interest in this book.

    Volume 1 , Around Grothendieck’s Esquisse d’un Programme
Edited by Leila Schneps, Pierre Lochak
In stock The first of two companion volumes on anabelian algebraic geometry, this book contains the famous, but hitherto unpublished manuscript ‘Esquisse d’un Programme’ (Sketch of a Program) by Alexander Grothendieck. This work, written in 1984, fourteen years after his retirement from public life in mathematics, together with the closely connected letter to Gerd Faltings, dating from 1983 and also published for the first time in this volume, describe a powerful program of future mathematics, unifying aspects of geometry and arithmetic via the central point of moduli spaces of curves; it is written in an artistic and informal style. The book also contains several articles on subjects directly related to the ideas explored in the manuscripts; these are surveys of mathematics due to Grothendieck, explanations of points raised in the Esquisse, and surveys on progress in the domains described there.
