Grosseteste, Robert (ca. 1168-1253)

English theologian and scholar who fought for the inclusion of more science in the university curriculum. He studied at Oxford and became its first chancellor. He was one of the earliest to introduce Aristotle and the Greek corpus to Europe. He was also the teacher of Roger Bacon . Grosseteste went back to the original Greek to make new translations not suffering from the corruption produced by translating first to Arabic then to Latin. He was particularly interested in optics, using Alhazen as a guide. He experimented with mirrors and lenses and proposed a complicated explanation for the rainbow With experimentation and use of the hypothetico-deductive method, he began the modern scientific tradition. He had a mystic cosmology and cosmogony, in which light was divided into its original divine form ("lux") and its material corrupted form ("lumen"). Bacon (Roger)

Grosseteste, Robert c. 1175 , English prelate. Educated at Oxford and probably also at Paris, he became one of the most learned men of his time. He taught at Oxford and later, as rector, made the university an important center of learning. In 1224 he became lector of the Franciscans there and founded the Oxford Franciscan school, which profoundly influenced medieval thought. His most illustrious pupils, Adam Marsh and Roger Bacon , continued Grosseteste's work at Oxford after he was made (1235) bishop of Lincoln, then the most populous see of England. Grosseteste fought for the maintenance of the Magna Carta. He thwarted efforts of Henry III to control ecclesiastical appointments, and as a member of the baronial council he supported the reforms of Simon de Montfort (1208-65). Grosseteste did not hestitate to censure Pope Innocent IV for his excessive exactions and for appointing foreigners to rich English benefices; he also attacked the Curia for its corruption and indolence. Some historians see in Grosseteste's protests against Rome an influence upon Wyclif and a foreshadowing of the Reformation. Grosseteste was a prolific scholar. He knew Greek and probably Hebrew; his translations of, and commentaries on, Aristotle served as a foundation for the scholasticism of Albertus Magnus and Thomas Aquinas. His prolific writing included treatises on physics, optics, light, motion, color, mathematics, astronomy, psychology, pastoral works, and polemical poems in French for the layman. For 50 years after his death he was venerated in his diocese as a saint. In recent years he has been accounted one of the early practitioners of modern scientific method. Few of his writings are available in English. Three treatises are translated in Richard McKeon

Attitude and Image, or, What Will Simulation Let Us Eliminate?
    A draft by
    Nigel J.T. Thomas
    California State University Los Angeles.
This was originally written and presented at the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar for College Teachers on Folk Psychology vs. Mental Simulation: How Minds Understand Minds , run by Robert Gordon at the University of Missouri - St. Louis , June-July 1999. It has been only lightly revised since, and should be considered a rough draft. Needless to say, the ideas herein owe a lot to what I learned at the seminar from Robert Gordon and the other participants, particularly Jim Garson. However, any errors are my responsibility alone.

Attitude and Image, or, What Will Simulation Let Us Eliminate?
[1] "The set of folk psychological 'platitudes' that people readily recognize and assent to," or [2] "A theory that systematizes the folk psychological platitudes in a perspicuous way." The remainder are examples of what they call "internal accounts", which they explain as construing "folk psychology" as referring to "An internally represented knowledge structure used by the cognitive mechanism underlying our folk psychological capacities". Under this heading they distinguish versions of theory-theory according to how the information embodying the putative theory might be stored: [3] "In a mental model or a connectionist network that maps onto a set of propositions in a unique and well motivated way,"

Some even from your own group will come distorting the truth in order to entice the disciples to follow them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to warn everyone with tears. Had the leaders of the thirteenth century heeded this preacher, many of the disasters of the following three centuries might have been avoided. Robert was a peasant lad from Suffolk, born about 1175. He distinguished himself at Oxford in law, medicine, languages, natural sciences, and theology. He became what is now called Chancellor of Oxford University. In 1235, he was elected Bishop of Lincoln, in area the largest diocese in England. He promptly visited all the churches in the diocese and quickly removed many of the prominent clergy because they were neglectng their pastoral duties. He vigorously opposed the practice by which the Pope appointed Italians as absentee clergy for English churches (collecting salaries from said churches without ever setting foot in the country). He insisted that his priests spend their time in the service of their people, in prayer, and in study. He went on a pilgrimage to Rome, where he spoke out boldly against ecclesiastical abuses. Back in England, he spoke against unlawful usurpations of power by the monarch, and was one of those present at the signing of the Magna Carta. Grosseteste's scholarly writings embraced many fields of learning. He translated into Latin the

For thousands of years, the theme of creation has exerted a powerful fascination on men’s minds. The re-introduction of ancient thought into western Europe during the 12th and 13th centuries inspired new writings on the old themes, designed to meet the needs and answer the questions of a new age. A work of critical importance in this tradition was the Hexaëmeron of Robert Grosseteste, a study of
