David Gregory was a nephew of James Gregory . He studied at Marischal College, part of the University of Aberdeen, between 1671 and 1675. Notice that he started his university education at the age of 12 years. There is however, no evidence that he took his degree. After his university studies David, still only 16 years old, visited several countries on the continent and did not return to Scotland until 1683. At the age of 24 he was appointed Professor of mathematics at the University of Edinburgh. At Edinburgh David Gregory taught Newtonian theories. He is famed for this since he was the first university teacher to teach the 'modern' theories at a time when even Cambridge was still teaching Greek natural philosophy. Gregory's lecture notes at Edinburgh were to form the basis of Maclaurin 's Treatise of Practical Geometry which was published in 1745. Gregory himself published

58. Hartford History: Structures And Styles
Article on a book, written by gregory Andrews and david Ransom, that guides readers on neighborhoodby-neighborhood walking tours of Hartford architecture. By Kevin Flood, published in the Journal Inquirer on April 14, 1989.
http://www.HartfordHistory.net/structures.html
Hartford History
'Structures and Styles' of Hartford Architecture
This article, by Kevin Flood, first appeared in the Journal Inquirer on April 14, 1989. So you think you know every square inch of Hartford. All right, where's Little Hollywood? Hint: It's in the west end off Farmington Avenue. Give up? It's a row of brick apartment buildings along Owen Street, supposedly given its nickname as a tribute to the beautiful young women who moved in there when it opened in the 1920s. Stop to look at the buildings some day, and you'll notice their unusual mix of architectural styles - one has a slightly Moorish design while another echoes the Tudor Revival. Gregory E. Andrews and David F. Ransom throw the spotlight on Little Hollywood and 500 other examples of Hartford architecture in their book, "Structures and Styles: Guided Tours of Hartford Architecture." Published by the Connecticut Historical Society and the Connecticut Architecture Foundation, "Structures and Styles" highlights everything from downtown's Old State House to the trendy Comet Diner on Farmington Avenue, from pressed brick apartment buildings in the South End to Gothic churches in the North End. While the book covers all of the expected landmarks, like the Colt Armory and the Travelers tower, its ultimate value lies in the attention it lavishes on dozens of lesser-known and even obscure buildings.

Biographical Information Occupation, Sphere of Activity David Gregory, nephew of the famous St Andrews mathematician James Gregorie ( ), was born in Upper Kirkgate, Aberdeen, on 03 June, 1659 . He was educated for a while at nearby Marischal College, was endowed financially by the murder of his older brother, and was set loose to pursue his private interests in maths, physics, and astronomy. Without graduating from Marischal, he unhorsed the mathematics chairman at Edinburgh University in a broadsheet debate in and took his job. He was given a hasty MA from Edinburgh for decorum's sake, and he taught mathematics for seven years, and also optics, mechanics, hydrostatics, and even anatomy. Town-gown quarrels arose in , turned gradually libellous, and eventually attracted the Hanoverian committee of visitation then scouring Scottish universities for Cartesians and other treasoners. Not holding any truly radical views on anything, Gregory nevertheless saw fit by to take a fresh appointment comfortably far away, in Oxford. This was the Savilian chair of astronomy, in which he spent the rest of his professional life. With his new post he was given another MA and a desultory MD, along with a non-fellow 'MA commoner' appointment in Balliol College and membership in the Royal Society. He took a quick trip to Flanders in 1693, then settled into productive teaching and publishing until
