He taught himself calculus at the age of 12 years. His secondary schooling was at Boston Latin School from which he graduated, entering Harvard University. There he worked under Saunders MacLane and became interested in finite groups , the subject he would return to after a few years studying algebraic geometry to make it his life's major work. Gorenstein graduated in 1943 and, to contribute to the war effort, he accepted a teaching position at Harvard to teach mathematics to army personnel. At the end of World War II, Gorenstein returned to Harvard, this time to undertake graduate work with Zariski . This work led to a thesis on algebraic geometry in which he introduced rings which are now named after him. After the award of his doctorate in 1950 Gorenstein accepted a post at Clark University in 1951. He remained there, except for the year 1958-59 which he spent as a visiting professor at Cornell, until he moved to North Eastern University in 1964. In 1968-69 he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. After five years at North Eastern, Gorenstein accepted a professorship at Rutgers University where he remained until his death.

Lecturas Matemáticas Obituario matemático 1992 - 1994, Parte I Daniel Gorenstein, 1923 - 1992 Su estrategia de clasificación de los grupos finitos simples fue cristalizada exitosamente a comienzos de los ochenta, poniendo fin a la, por él denominada, 'Guerra de los Treinta años' En agosto de 1992 fuimos sorprendidos por la infausta noticia del fallecimiento del matemático norteamericano D ANIEL G ORENSTEIN. Sorprendidos, digo, pues bien sabíamos que G ORENSTEIN se encontraba en ese momento en la plenitud de sus capacidades intelectuales. Graduado en Harvard bajo la tutela de O SCAR Z ARISKI, su primer interés matemático fue la geometría algebraica, campo en el cual escribió su tesis, pero que no cultivó. Sin embargo, ya en esa tesis hay muestras de su asombrosa visión matemática. Los anillos de G ORENSTEIN, por ejemplo, herencia de ella, son un instrumento muy apreciado por los geómetras de hoy día. Fue, no obstante, la teoría de grupos finitos a la cual dedicó sus mayores esfuerzos y su enorme talento. (pronounced GAL-wah) was born on October 25, 1811, near Paris. He took his first mathematics course when he was 15 and quickly mastered the works of Legendre and Lagrange . At 18, Galois wrote his important research on the theory of equations and submitted it to the French Academy of Sciences for publication. The paper was given to Cauchy for refereeing. Cauchy, impressed by the paper, agreed to present it to the academy, but never did. At the age of 19, Galois entered a paper of the highest quality in the competition for the Grand Prize in Mathematics, given by the French Academy of Sciences. The paper was given to Fourier, who died shortly thereafter. Galois's paper was never seen again. Galois twice failed his entrance examination to l'Ecole Polytechnique. He did not know some basic mathematics, and he did mathematics almost entirely in his head, to the annoyance of the examiner. Legend has it that Galois became so enraged at the stupidity of the examiner that he threw an eraser at him. Galois spent most of the last year and a half of his life in prison for revolutionary political offenses. While in prison, he attempted suicide, and prophesied his death in a duel. On May 30, 1832, Galois was shot in a duel and died the next day at the age of 20. The life and death of Galois have long been a source of fascination and speculation for mathematics historians. One article argues convinvingly that three of the most widely read accounts of Galois's life are highly fictitious.
