The majority of information contained on this page represents a summary of Gulf explorations as described by Galtsoff (1954a), and Darnell and Defenbaugh (1990). Works cited within these documents are noted as appropriate.
Columbus' second voyage takes him to the western end of Cuba, but he does not enter the Gulf of Mexico. Amerigo Vespucci finds safe harbor in Campeche Bay, north of Tabasco. Some sources claim he reached as far north as Tampico (Thacher, 1896). Map of the new discoveries by Juan de la Cosa, 1500. First map showing the Gulf of Mexico . Juan de la Cosa utilizes information from the voyages of Columbus (1492, 1493, 1498), Vespucci (1497, 1498), and Cabot (1497, 1498) to create this map of the new world. The Gulf of Mexico is clearly visible on this chart although it is not named and is partially covered by an inset drawing. Alberto Cantino produces a map of the world. The western portion of the map shows for the first time the west coast of Florida and the adjacent part of the Gulf.

87. Mystery Of The Lady In Blue
Now, give a listen to Father Damian Massanet, as he writes to Don Carlos deSiguenza y gongora, a highranking Spanish official in Mexico, in 1690.
http://www.texfiles.com/eckhardt/ladyinblue.htm
The Mystery
of the Lady in Blue by C.F. Eckhardt The American southwest owes much of its Spanish exploration and settlement to a woman. Texas owes the entire Spanish mission effort to her. That woman, in her entire life, never left Spain.
At least, she never left it physically H Sister Maria was a mystic and a writer, and her works which still survive include books called The Mystical City Of God and Divine History Of The Virgin Mother Of God . Both books were written from repeated visions the abbess had. She died in Agreda on May 24, 1665, at the age of 63. Thus far we have seen the life of a not-particularly remarkable Spanish nun. Now, give a listen to Father Damian Massanet, as he writes to Don Carlos de Siguenza y Gongora, a high-ranking Spanish official in Mexico, in 1690. But who was this mysterious woman in blue? "She came down from the heights to us, she taught us the new religion, she stayed among us for a time, she told us you would come and to make you welcome, and then she went away. That’s all we know." And that’s all the Spanish could get from them. "Is this your woman in blue?" he asked.

89. Graves
Many early chroniclers in Mexico, among these; Garcia, Becerra Tanco, and Siguenzay gongora, believed that the Apostle St. Thomas was the original Topiltzin.
http://muweb.millersville.edu/~columbus/papers/graves.html
Troy Graves November 4, 1997 Dr. Tirado History 392.01 Aztec Mythology: Quetzalcoatl
The translation of Quetzalcoatl means literally Plumed Serpent. A more understandable translation would be feathered serpent. This point is interesting in that he very rarely appears in this form. He is more often depicted in many of his other roles, specifically as Topiltzin the high priest (Brundage 102-03). The significance of this will appear later in the paper, but suffice it to say the name is in itself misleading when referring to this complex deity of the Aztecs.
Another manifestation of Quetzalcoatl is that of the wind. The wind that blows before the storm is traditionally associated with this complex deity. The wind is a powerful force of nature; it can be playful or be one of nature’s most destructive forces. Quetzalcoatl as the wind is called nine wind. In this guise he is associated often with the air in general not so much as a helpful or harmful force. The Aztec name for a tornado or thunderstorm wind was ehecacoatl or roughly translated "wind snake" (Brundage 106). It is easy to see how a society could attribute the characteristics of a snake to the wind. The wind swirls and moves with effortless grace, just as a snake glides along the ground. Brundage goes on to say that this "shows the ease with which the Aztec mind accepted the reptilian nature of the wind" (Brundage 106-07).
All the previous versions of Quetzalcoatl are major ways the Aztecs expressed the powers that related to this deity, however the most famous, and for the purposes of this paper the most relevant expression is that of the high priest Topiltzin. This form is the only one in which he is truly human and it is from this form that he is said to have transformed into all the other manifestations that were previously discussed. The Aztecs saw Topiltzin as man-god, almost in the manner of a Hercules, not quite a god but much more than a man. He is often depicted wearing a copal bag, a conical headdress and at the front of his garments were in the shape of seashells. He is also depicted as being fair skinned and having a beard, supposedly to enhance his appearance of wisdom and age (Berdan 129).

Given the sociopolitical status under which Latin American countries developed during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, criollos were thought to be victims of a form of -capitis diminutio- which was manifested in all their endeavors and colored their thinking (Sanchez, Luis Alberto. -El doctor Oceano: Estudios sobre Don Pedro de Peralta Barnuevo.- Lima: Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, 1967, p. 215).
