A History of Modern Mexico, 1810-1996

By Enrique Krauze Chapter One: The Children of Cuauhtemoc Raised high on the pedestal of the monument, the statue of Cuauhtemoc, with its haughty expression, exemplified the neo-Aztec fashion in academic art, a style that had been growing steadily more popular since the victory of the Liberals. Paintings and sculptures would portray Indians with Apache faces and Apollonian bodies draped in Roman togas, participating in idealized scenes of "the ancient world." The Aztec past had such ornamental appeal that the first Mexican brewery, which opened in the industrial city of Monterrey in 1890, was named Cerveceria Cuauhtemoc. It used a drawing of the statue as its trademark. Ideological manipulation of the ancient past was an old Mexican custom. When they consolidated their empire, the Aztec emperors took the codices recording their true nomadic origins and had them burned. Then they had history rewritten to link them directly with the Toltecsthe great classical civilization of Mesoamericaand the mythical founder of that culture, Quetzalcoatl. They were familiar with the abandoned cities of Teotihuacan and Tula, "coming from a time that no one now can describe." They called the Toltec culture "our possession, that which we must preserve." The Porfiristas, conscious of the power of history as a source of legitimacy, had taken the same route as the Aztecs. Crossing out their Catholic and Spanish origins, they were stretching a bridge toward the Aztec world.

http://codesign.scu.edu/anthroweb2/010/PAGES/EVENTDATE2.HTM
The first major period in archaeology is the Speculative Period, which was in the 16th and 17th centuries. It primarily concentrated on Latin America. The first trend of this period was composed of stories and chronicles of people (mainly priests and other administrators) who had traveled with the Spanish conquistadors. These chronicles were narratives in story form and were generally non-scientific in nature. The second trend was in the 18th and 19th centuries and like the first trend consisted of the narratives of explorers and travelers, yet differs from the last pattern in that it went beyond simply the description of observations. Later in this period, archaeology became not only a side concern of travelers, but the main purpose of their effort. (http://emuseum.mnsu.edu/prehistory/latinamerica/topics/history.html) The first organized excavations of Teotihuacan took place around 1675 by a man named Carlos de Siguenza y Gongora. He focused largely on the Moon Pyramid. (http://studentweb.tulane.edu/~averlan/main.htm) Siguenza y Gongora's approach is delineated by Bernal into three patterns. First of all, he attempted to use a monument, in this case the Pyramid of the Moon, to interpret a problem in history. (Yet much of what he may have written up has not been preserved for inquiry today.)

    Ralph Bauer
Not yet published - available from August 2003 Ralph Bauer presents a comparative investigation of colonial prose narratives in Spanish and British America from 1542 to 1800. He discusses narratives of shipwreck, captivity, and travel, as well as imperial and natural histories of the New World in the context of transformative early modern scientific ideologies and investigates the inter-connectedness of literary evolutions in various places of the early modern Atlantic world. Bauer positions the narrative models promoted by the ‘New Sciences’ during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries within the context of the geopolitical question of how knowledge can be centrally controlled in outwardly expanding empires. He brings into conversation with one another writers from various parts of the early modern Atlantic world including Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdes, Samuel Purchas, William Strachey, Mary Rowlandson, Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora, William Byrd, and Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur.
