Kurt Gödel and rotating universes
The collected works of Gödel were financed and edited by the mathematical logic community, which was naturally not that interested in his hobby with relativistic cosmology. Although the Gödel chronology does list his intentions to study physics those first 2 years after his arrival at the University of Vienna in 1924 before switching to mathematics, there is no mention in the introductory biography that he learned about rotation in general relativity from Hans Thirring. [The editor-in-chief Solomon Feferman should not be slighted for not knowing this since the editorial note and short bio introducing the reprints of Gödel's 2 relativity papers in General Relativity and Gravitation also did not report this "fact", found by an internet search .] Thirring and Josef Lense had studied the field of a rotating body around 1920, whose classic work on this topic was recently reprinted in English translation [1984]. In an unpublished lecture at the Institute for Advanced Study in 1949 made available in his collected works [vol. 3], Gödel remarks that ``a note by George Gamov in Nature [1946] suggested that the whole universe might be in a state of uniform rotation and that this rotation might explain the observed rotation of the galactic systems," which must have inspired his original work in relativistic cosmology presented a few years later.

Kurt Godel
Kurt Godel, b. Apr. 28, 1906, d. Jan. 14, 1978, was a Czech-born American mathematician and logician. He is best known for his proof of Godel's undecidability theorems, which state that any rigidly logical mathematical system contains questions that cannot be proved or disproved on the basis of the Axioms within the system. These results were an epochal landmark in 20th-century mathematics, indicating that mathematics is not a finished object, as had been believed. His proof first appeared in a German technical journal in 1931. This paper ended nearly a century of attempts to establish axioms that would provide a rigorous basis for all mathematics. Godel became a member of the faculty of the University of Vienna in 1930, where he belonged to the school of logical positivism. In 1940 he emigrated to the United States; he was a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, in Princeton, N.J., from 1953 to his death.

Nonetheless, John Dawson comes as close as possible to understanding what made Godel click. Having catalogued Godel's works and personal papers, Dawson saw aspects of Godel's life that perhaps no one short of his wife had seen. The book is a fascinating jaunt through the through the lives of one of the greatest minds of the 20th century. What is also interesting is Godel's interaction with personalities such as Einstein and Van Neumann. While the mathematics is often abstract, as can be expected, Logical Dilemmas is a mesmerizing read.

    Kurt Godel Kurt Godel
(1906-1978), elected to Academy membership in 1955, was noted for his contributions to the foundations of logic and mathematics. In a celebrated paper published in 1931, Godel first put forward what came to be known simply as "Godel's Theorem": in certain formal systems, there exist propositions that cannot be proved or disproved using the axioms of that system. With this theorm, Godel had effectively demonstrated that soem mathematical propositions are undecidable. Godel's Theorem made a deep impression in the fields of mathematics and logic, and has been called the most significant mathematical truth of the 20th century. Godel was born in Brunn (now Brno), in what is now the Czech Republic. He studied physics in Vienna, and emigrated to the United States in 1939, where he took a position at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study. In addition to other honors, in 1975 he was awarded the National Medal of Science, the US government's highest scientific honor. The National Academies Current Projects Publications Directories ...

GODEL, Kurt (1906-78). In 1931 the mathematician and logician Kurt Godel published what has been called Godel's proof in arithmetic. This proof states that within any rigidly logical mathematical system there are propositions (or statements) that cannot be proved or disproved on the basis of the axioms within that system. It is therefore uncertain that the basic axioms of arithmetic will not give rise to contradictions. This proof has become a hallmark of 20th-century mathematics, and its significance is still debated.

A logical system can not liberate. But that doesn't mean that rules are bad. Rules help create order and understanding. A society based on rules is far better off than a society not based on rules. And Math put a man on the moon. Math gave us the Internet. Math gave us this whole wild global culture. Yea, Math may run with the wind and the free range chickens as long as not the whole Truth is addressed. A system of logic can not cover Truth; Truth can not be expressed in logic. The Grand Unified Theory (GUT, or GUTH as a certain somebody demands) will not be written in Math. This is also the reason why you never hear anyone solemnly swear to tell the Truth, the whole Truth and nothing but the Truth, so help me Mathematics.
Still, she is beautiful. Do thy best old Math, despite thy wrong.
