Administrative/Biographical History
Joseph Bonomi (1796-1878), sculptor and Egyptologist, went to Rome in 1822 to study under Canova (who died before his arrival). In 1824-6 he was part of Robert Hay's expedition to Egypt, and sketched many antiquities. In Cairo in 1827-8 he illustrated James Burton's Excerpta hieroglyphica Nineveh and its palaces , describing the city and its sculptures, reliefs and inscriptions from the artistic and scriptural points of view, which appeared in several editions from 1852. Bonomi invented a machine for measuring the proportions of the body, and wrote a treatise on the proportions of the human figure.
Scope and Content
The collection comprises mostly Joseph Bonomi's correspondence and papers, with some of his brother Ignatius Bonomi and other members of his family, especially his sister-in-law Isabella Mary Martin.

SCOPE:

This compilation provides references to a variety of materials and sources in the collections of the Library of Congress on the history, present status, and uses of lighter-than-air aircraft, also known as balloons, airships, dirigibles, aerostats, and blimps.
A balloon is a vehicle whose flexible bag is inflated with a lighter-than-air gas, such as helium, so that it will rise and float in the atmosphere. The bag can be attached to some sort of carrier for passengers. For free balloons, only their altitude can be controlled, and their direction and speed depends on the wind. Airships, however, are equipped with some means of propelling and steering, so that controlled flight is possible. There are three types of airships: nonrigid, semirigid, and rigid. Lighter-than-air vehicles get their lift from what are called "aerostatic forces," rather than from aerodynamic forces that support a heavier-than-air aircraft. A balloon or airship's lift is derived from its buoyancy, which comes from the difference between the density of the atmosphere and that of the lifting gas that fills it.

introduction
The Manuscripts Collection at Brown University includes archives, papers, artificial collections, and individual manuscripts - over 2,000,000 pieces of paper in all. Archives, typically, are collections of manuscripts, printed materials, and other items that have been generated by an institution or organization in the course of its official activities. Papers are collections of related manuscripts generated by an individual or family. Artificial collections are groups of manuscripts assembled by collectors. The word manuscript literally means "written by hand." In library usage, however, manuscripts can either be handwritten or typed.
access and use
In order to locate all manuscripts relevant to your research, it is advisable to begin by speaking with the Manuscripts staff, who will assist you in using the Manuscripts Catalog, Josiah , and related finding aids and databases. Josiah includes collection-level records for all manuscript collections acquired prior to March, 1996. Consult the Manuscripts Catalog and the collection registers, inventories, and finding aids for more detailed subject and name access to manuscript col lections.

Camille Flammarion at age 36 As noted on the previous page , NASA attributed the woodcut to the twentieth century. This bibliographic trivia raises the intriguing possibility that the original woodcut may not be authentic after all. Yet the NASA caption again, like so many others, gives no specific source. How did the NASA writers know that it originated in 1911, without specifying a source? Did they have one and not tell us? But how did they know the 1911 source was the first to use the woodcut? How can we know when we have found the "first" occurrence of the woodcut? As it turns out, the attribution to an unspecified 1911 source is demonstrably false, for the woodcut appears in black and white in Camille Flammarion, (Paris, 1888), p. 163. This book by the "Carl Sagan of the nineteenth-century" is held in the

  • Book and ephemera sales and consulting is where we are now, but it took a while to fly here. With 60 years of combined flying experience, it was natural to collect in our field. That is how Valhalla started, and has now grown into an international search and development service specializing in all forms of flight . While buying and selling is primary, we work in public and private library and collection development, appraisals, historical consulting writing and publishing, even financial and estate planning. We buy and sell in all aspects of our field, books, manuscripts, ephemera, three dimensional, toys, artifacts, medals, philately...just about anything good. Herein we offer a potpourri of thoughts, bits and pieces, maybe an idea or two.

On the dissecting table
by Bill Casselman
Henry Perigal 1801 - 1898
It is essential to true history that the minor and secondary phenomena of the progress of mind should be more carefully examined ... Augustus De Morgan, in the Introduction to Arithmetical Books Henry Perigal was an amateur mathematician whose life spanned almost the entire nineteenth century and who is now known principally for an elegant cut-and-shift proof - what is now called a dissection proof - of Pythagoras' Theorem. He himself perhaps felt that this was his most important accomplishment - his diagram was carved, presumably at his own request, on his gravestone (right). He discovered a number of other interesting geometrical dissections, however, and both his life and his role in nineteenth century British scientific society are curious.
