Life and Times
At 16, Galois took the examinations to enter the prestigious Poly technique and failed. Years later Terquem remarked, "A candidate of superior intelligence is lost with an examiner of inferior intelligence." However, Galois found a mathematics teacher, Louis Richard, and really started studying and doing mathematics. His first paper, on continued fractions, was published when he was 17. At 18, Galois reapplied to the Poly technique, and again the examination went badly. Finally, during the oral part of the exam, he lost patience with one of the examiners and threw the eraser at him. It was a hit, but Galois could never apply there again. At 19, Galois attended the university and wrote three original papers on the theory of algebraic equations. He submitted them to the Academy of Sciences for the competition in mathematics. The Secretary of the Academy took them home to read, but then died before writing a report about them and the papers were never found. Galois was understandably upset: "Genius is condemned by a malicious social organization to an eternal denial of justice in favor of fawning mediocrity." In 1830 the French masses revolted, and Galois was a staunch supporter. The director of the school locked the students in the school during the fighting and then expelled Galois for a public letter he wrote condemning the director. Galois tried to start his own school of mathematics, but got no students, so he joined the National Guard "If a carcass is needed to stir up the people, I will donate mine." Galois was jailed for supposedly threatening the King, but was found 'not guilty' by a jury. Finally he was convicted and sentenced to 6 months in jail for "illegally wearing a uniform."

Evariste Galois (1811 - 1832)
Galois is one of the most tragic and romantic figures of mathematics. The son of the mayor of a small town outside Paris, he undoubtedly had the potential to become one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. Galois proved that no polynomial of degree greater than five could be solved analyticaly, a great outsanding problem of the day. In the course of doing this he singlehandedly laid the foundations of a whole new area of mathematics called Group Theory, he is remembered in the title of the subject Galois Theory. He did all of this before the age of 21. Galois' early schooling was at the infamous lycee of Louis Grande in Paris. This school was notorious for beatings and severe punishments of the students. The treatment of pupils was so bad that the students staged a rebellion, demanding better conditions. The rebellion was put down and Galois returned to the torture of lycee Louis Grande. At the age of 16 he recognised his mathematical genius and applied to the prestigous Ecole Polytechnique. However so sure was he of acceptance that he did not bother to study for the entrance exams, his lack of formal qualifications and a less than scintillating acedemic record in areas outside mathematics also counted against him, he was turned down. In the Ecole Normal he disregarded his regular schooling and investigated the further reaches of higher mathematics. He was fascinated by Legendre's (1752 - 1830) work on solutions to polynomial equations. In 1828 Galois came under the wing of Louis Paul Emile Richard, who was noted for fostering young mathematical talent, at last it seemed that things were going Galois' way. Galois secured a promise from Cauchy (1789 - 1857) to review his first paper for submission to a

The life of Evariste Galois, and how 60 pages of work became abstract algebra
ABSTRACT
What does it take to make a famous mathematician? A volume of work published, a lifetime of accomplishments? Not so in the case of Évariste Galois. Born in 1811 and dying just 20 years later in a duel, Galois had no time for years of contemplation or long tomes on mathematics during his career. The whole of his work spans just 60 pages, all of it written frantically the night before the duel that would end his life. But this work, this short treatise with “I have not time” scrawled repeatedly in the margins, develops an entirely new algebra, a modern system of groups and fields, enough material for perhaps five college courses on the subject. Because Galois’ work can be taken and expanded, it is possible to prove dozens of properties of group theory from three basic postulates. “In all the history of science, there is no completer example of the triumph of crass stupidity over untamable genius than is afforded by the all too brief life of Évariste Galois.” • E.T. Bell, “Genius and Stupidity: Galois,” from Men of Mathematics

Brilliance in a Short and Tragic Life
variste Galois was born in the village of Bourg-la-Reine near Paris on October 25, 1811 to Nicholas Gabriel Galois and Adelaide Marie Galois Demante. Both of his parents were intelligent and well educated in philosophy, classical literature and religion. However, there is no indication of any special mathematical ability in any members of Galois' family. His mother was his sole teacher until he was 12 years old, teaching him subjects such as Greek, Latin and religion, where she imparted her own skepticism to her son. Galois' father was an influential member of the community and in 1815, he was elected mayor of the village.
Galois enrolled at the Lycée of Louis-le-Grand in Paris as a boarding student in October, 1823. During 1824-25, his school record was good and he received several prizes. However in 1826, Galois was asked to repeat the year because his work in rhetoric was not up to the required standard.
February, 1827, was a turning point in Galois' life. He enrolled in his first mathematics class, the class of M. Vernier. He quickly became absorbed in mathematics and his director of studies wrote:

Date on Earth: June 5, 1832
It is our honor and privilege to announce the arrival of a new spirit, the mathematician Evariste Galois. While humans on Earth have yet to
discover the meaning and importance of his theories, rumor has it that his work will change the course of the human study of mathematics. He developed what we have chosen to call the Galois group, Galois field, and Galois theory. To gain some insight on the life of this extraordinary being, the Heaven Gazette has interviewed Galois shortly after his arrival to Heaven.
Algebraist and Group Theorist HG: Welcome to Heaven, monsieur Galois! How long have you been among us?
Galois: Only a short while. I left Earth on May 31, but I seem to have left my sense of time behind. Time in Heaven apparently does not coordinate with time on Earth.
HG: That is true. According to the Official Record, you left Earth when you were only 21 years old. How is it that you have become so knowledgeable in the subject of mathematics in such a short period of time? You must have begun studying it at a very early age.
Galois: Actually, I didn't take my first mathematics course until I was around 16. My mother taught me at home until I was 12, and although both my parents were very intelligent people neither had backgrounds in mathematics to guide me in that direction. It is a good thing I discovered Professor Vernier and mathematics, as my performance in rhetoric and literature were less than stellar...

Foros Chat Top 10 ...
