Twilight of a Golden Age
Selected Poems of Abraham Ibn Ezra
Edited and Translated With Introduction and Notes by Leon J. Weinberger Weinberger presents for the first time in an English translation a broad range of Abraham Ibn Ezra's sacred and secular poetry. Abraham Ibn Ezra (1092-1167), the last of an illustrious quintet of Hispanic "Golden Age" poets that included Samuel Ibn Nagrela, Solomon Ibn Gabirol, Moses Ibn Ezra, and Judah Halevi, was a transitional figure. He anticipated the decline of Hispano-Hebrew courtly culture in Spain even as he participated in the newly emerging centers of learning in Italy and France, which he visited and influenced. With Abraham Ibn Ezra's departure from Spain an illustrious chapter of Jewish learning and culture came to an end in the region, even as that culture was to spread its influence throughout the rest of Europe. One of the best-known and admired Jewish figures in the West, Ibn Ezrawhose Pisan Tables was the authoritative astronomical guide for Roger Bacon, Nicolas of Cusa, and Pico della Mirandolais remembered for his pioneering efforts in introducing the mathematics of the Arabs to the Europeans. In Victorian England, Ibn Ezra was the model for Robert Browning's "Rabbi Ben Ezra," whose philosophy reflected "robust hope and cheerfulness." Author of more than 100 books on medicine, astronomy, mathematics, philosophy, poetry, linguistics, and extensive commentaries on the Bible and the Talmud, Ibn Ezra was the model itinerant sageteaching and writing both in his native Spain and in North Africa, Italy, Provence, Northern France, and England.

A History of Rabbi Ishtori HaParhi The first researcher into the land of Israel From the Introduction of his book
CAFOR Ve PERAH
Six centuries ago, long before any of our co-religionists thought to occupy themselves with the study of the land of Israel . A French Jew...set about dispelling the mists surrounding research on this topic. Torah commentators before him had toiled to clarify the borderlines and geography of the land of Israel the best way they could, yet they had never even set foot on the soil of the Holy Land. Thus their estimations did not always match with reality on the ground...even their effort set out only to understand Scriptural verse, not in order to know where these places might be. Only Rabbi lshtori HaParhi, the first of Eretz Israel researchers, concentrated his efforts upon the intimate study of the land of Israel. Four travellers previous to Rabbi Ishtori's time, related matters concerning the land of Israel. They are: Rabbi Benjamin MiTudela Rabbi Petahya of Regensburg, Rabbi Shmuel ben Shimshon and Rabbi Yaakov, emissary of the Paris academy (yeshiva). Yet these cannot be rightfully called "Eretz Israel researchers" since they stuck to the main roads on their journeys, and never took a footpath off the beaten track Thus their accounts ale almost identical and monotonous. What is more, they related only from what they heard of places which they did not see...without checking matters out for themselves. Not so Rabbi Ishtori HaParhi, who toured the length and breadth of the land of Israel.

    INTRODUCTION
    Colloquium IAU 72 is the first IAU-sponsored activity in this country, and it therefore seemed appropriate to include a paper on Astronomy in Israel. With the highly singular history of this nation, the scene will move from Eretz-Israel to Babylon (present day Iraq) and to Europe before returning to this area.
    MEGALITHS
    Prehistoric astronomical activity is represented by a Stonehengelike megalithic circle and "Observatory" at Rujm-el-Hiri , near Yonathan in the Golan, the Westernmost sector of the historical Bashan plateau dating from the IIIrd Millenium BC. Star worship is mentioned in the Old Testament as beeing common among the Canaanites , but the Bashan inhabitants who built that Golan megalithic circle antedate the Canaanites. Very little is known about them and the presumably religous role of their edifice. To the IIIth Century BC Israelitis, they appeared as the work of giants (Refa'im, also Anakim, Emim, Zuzim), and this is probably the source of the legends about races of giants that had lived in Eretz-Israel prior to the Israelite conquest - including the characterization "a remnant of the giants" for Og , King of Bashan, in Deuteronomy and Joshua . Indeed, the Rujm-el-Hiri circle is just one among many megalithic remains in the Bashan, probably at the origin in Greece and England (the "Giant's Dance" = Stonehenge).

RABBI BEN EZRA por Robert Browning
traducido por Armando Roa Vial

el final de la vida, el origen del principio:
y Él dice: "Todo lo he ordenado;
la juventud solo muestra una parte; confiad en Dios:
mirad el todo sin temor". No porque nuestra juventud, recogiendo flores,
suspire: "¿Qué rosa abrazaremos?";
o "¿Cuál de todos los lirios que abandonamos
recordaremos después como el mejor?";

Robert Browning
English Poet
He was born in Camberwell, a suburb of London England. He attended boarding school in the same town and later travelled to Russia and Italy. He attended the University of London, however, Browning opted to resume his education at home instead. He was tutored in foreign languages; he learned Latin, Greek, French, Italian, and music in the comfort of his home. He had a wonderful and warm relationship with his learned parents; and being an avid reader, he acquired a great deal of knowledge for a man his age. He remained at home until he met and married Elizabeth Barret years later at the age of thirty-four. Browning was an active writer for a number of years but his most memorable volume of poetry, "Men And Women" really personifies his love for Italy and how he enjoyed reflecting on the esthetic of the landscapes as well as the romantic energies of the Renaissance era. In 1864, he wrote " Dramatis Personae,"
