is the most prominent mathematician of antiquity best known for his treatise on geometry The Elements . The long lasting nature of The Elements must make Euclid the leading mathematics teacher of all time. Little is known of Euclid's life except that he taught at Alexandria in Egypt. Euclid's most famous work is his treatise on geometry The Elements . The book was a compilation of geometrical knowledge that became the centre of mathematical teaching for 2000 years. Probably no results in The Elements were first proved by Euclid but the organization of the material and its exposition are certainly due to him. The Elements begins with definitions and axioms, including the famous fifth, or parallel, postulate that one and only one line can be drawn through a point parallel to a given line. Euclid's decision to make this an axiom led to Euclidean geometry. It was not until the 19th century that this axiom was dropped and non-euclidean geometries were studied.

Euclid of Alexandria 325 BC - 265 BC
Alexandria, Egypt
Euclid is possibly the most famous and most studied mathematican of all time. However, Euclid might not been a real person. There are three theories. First is that he was a true historical character who wrote the Elements. Second, Euclid was the leader of a team of mathematicians. Third, Euclid was not a historical character and didn't write the Elements. One author thought Euclid was the son of Naucrates and was born in Tyre, but it is fictitious. Euclid received his education at Plato's Academy in Athens, and later taught at the school in Alexandria now known as the Museum. There Euclid studied geometry, numbers, and number systems. He is a Greek mathematician. One of Eucild's biggest achievements is writing thirteen or more books. One of the books was The Elements, which many mathematicians read, including Archimedes and Pascal . There is no other book than the Bible which has been so widely translated and circulated.
The Elements - Basic Facts - written about 2300 years ago - no copies extant - a few potsherds dating from 225 BC contain notes about some propositions - many new editions were issued - earliest copy dates from 888 AD - in Oxford - it's all theroems and their proofs
The Elements - Structure: Thirteen Books - Books 1-6 - plane geometry - Books 7-9 - theory of numbers - Book 10 - incommensurables - Books 11-13 - soLId geometry Another achievement that Euclid did is Euclidian Geometry. Euclidian geometry is one of the best known types of geometry. Euclid's geometry is made up of his theories about geometry.

Hellenism and Multiculturalism
G reek was the official language of Ptolemaic Egypt and though Egyptians continued to form the overwhelming majority of the population of the countryside, Alexandria was different. Peoples from many lands settled there and most newcomers eventually adopted Greek, the lingua franca of the whole eastern Mediterranean and beyond. Even those groups known for the conservative retention of other aspects of their culture, notably the Jews, forgot their native tongues and learned Greek.
A t the Great Library Greek translations were commissioned as a matter of course. Aristeas, writing one hundred years after the Library's inception, records that Ptolemy I Soter handed over to Demetrius of Phaleron, a former pupil of Aristotle, the job of gathering books and scrolls, as well as letting him supervise a massive effort to translate the most important works of other cultures into Greek. This process began with the translation of Old Testament, for which project the library hired and housed seventy-two rabbis to produce its famous namesake, the Septuagint.

Biography
Little is known of Euclid's life except that he taught at Alexandria in Egypt. Most information given on Euclid is not thought to be reliable. Euclid was a very common name around this period, so much of the material that is associated with Euclid of Alexandria is fictitious because there are many references to a man named Euclid. There are three hypotheses surrounding Euclid's life. 1. Euclid was a historical character who wrote the Elements and the other works attributed to him. 2. Euclid was a member of a group of mathematicians working at Alexandria. Each one contributed to writing the 'complete works of Euclid', with the group writing books under Euclid's name even after his death. 3. Euclid of Megara lived about 100 years before Euclid of Alexandria. Euclid of Alexandria didn't exist at all. A group of mathematicians wrote The 'complete works of Euclid and took the name Euclid from Euclid of Megara. The evidence surrounding the first hypothesis is substantial. Little evidence exists which contradicts this hypothesis because it was accepted without question by everyone for over 2000 years. Even though some of the books of the Elements, many authors vary their style. Besides, Euclid undoubtedly based the Elements of previous works, so it is quite feasible as to why the book are written in different styles.

Historical Setting
Euclid of Alexandria is believed to have lived during the reign of Ptolemy I (306-283 B.C.). Alexander the Great ruled a great part of the known world for twelve years until his death in 323 B.C. at the age of 33. At Alexander's death, His leading general, Ptolemy, became governor of Egypt and completed the city of Alexandria, Alexander's great monument in Egypt. Ptolemy devoted himself to making Alexandria the center for intellectual learning. Ptolemy set up the Museum in Alexandria for teaching and research. At the Museum, students pursued their studies with access to the finest libraries. In return for regular lectures, the members of the Museum received free board, exemption from taxes, and salary stipends. The lived in very luxurious conditions and ate their meals together in a vast dining hall. The Museum became a milestone in the history of science. The Museum was forever lost in 641 A.D., but Euclid was believed to have been one of its many gifted scholars. Elizabeth Dietz

EUCLID (325 BC- 265 BC)
Euclid of Alexandria is the most prominent mathematician of antiquity best known for his treatise on mathematics The Elements . The long lasting nature of The Elements must make Euclid the leading mathematics teacher of all time. For his work in the field, he is known as the father of geometry and is considered one of the great Greek mathematicians. Very little is known about the life of Euclid. Both the dates and places of his birth and death are unknown. It is believed that he was educated at Plato's academy in Athens and stayed there until he was invited by Ptolemy I to teach at his newly founded university in Alexandria. There, Euclid founded the school of mathematics and remained there for the rest of his life. As a teacher, he was probably one of the mentors to Archimedes Little is known of Euclid's life except that he taught at Alexandria in Egypt. According to Proclus (410-485 A.D.) in his Commentary on the First Book of Euclid's Elements , Euclid came after the first pupils of Plato and lived during the reign of Ptolemy I (306-283 B.C.). Pappus of Alexandria (fl. c. 320 A.D.) in his Collection states that Apollonius of Perga (262-190 B.C.) studied for a long while in that city under the pupils of Euclid. Thus it is generally accepted that Euclid flourished at Alexandria in around 300 B.C. and established a mathematical school there. Proclus also says that Euclid "belonged to the persuasion of Plato,'' but there exists some doubt as to whether Euclid could truly be called a Platonist. During the middle ages, Euclid was often identified as Euclid of Megara, due to a confusion with the Socratic philosopher of around 400 B.C.

Euclides (Efklides in Greek) ca.325 - 265 BC
Euclid of Alexandria is the most prominent mathematician of antiquity best known for his treatise on mathematics "The Elements" . The long lasting nature of "The Elements" must make Euclid the leading mathematics teacher of all time. However little is known of Euclid's life except that he taught at Alexandria in Egypt. There is information that he was born in Megara, close to Athens. Euclid's most famous work is his treatise on mathematics "The Elements". The book was a compilation of knowledge that became the centre of mathematical teaching for 2000 years. Probably no results in "The Elements" were first proved by Euclid but the organisation of the material and its exposition are certainly due to him. In fact there is ample evidence that Euclid is using earlier textbooks as he writes the Elements since he introduces quite a number of definitions which are never used such as that of an oblong, a rhombus, and a rhomboid. Euclid also wrote the following books which have survived: "Data" (with 94 propositions), which looks at what properties of figures can be deduced when other properties are given; On "Divisions" which looks at constructions to divide a figure into two parts with areas of given ratio; "Optics" which is the first Greek work on perspective; and "Phaenomena" which is an elementary introduction to mathematical astronomy and gives results on the times stars in certain positions will rise and set. Euclid may not have been a first class mathematician but the long lasting nature of "The Elements" must make him the leading mathematics teacher of antiquity or perhaps of all time.

Back to KISH Home Page Euclid of Alexandria Euclid of Alexandria was born about 325 BC and he died about 265 BC He is called the Father of Geometry, and is best known for his treatise on mathematics, The Elements . It is said that this treatise may make Euclid the leading mathematics teacher of all time. Euclid most likely came from a rich family, because as a young child, he went to Plato’s school in ancient Greece, where only the rich were educated. After he finished school he went to Alexandria, where he discovered and wrote his theories on geometry. Euclid of Alexandria is often confused with Euclid of Meguro, who was also a leading mathematician. Euclid was a popular name at that time, but The Elements set Euclid of Alexandria apart from all the others. The Elements consists of 13 Volumes that summarize, describe, and explain all of the rules of geometry that we use today: Volumes 1-6: Plane Geometry; Volumes 7-9: Number Theory; Volume 10: Exodus’ Theory of Irrational Numbers; Volumes 11-13: Solid Geometry. The first edition of The Elements was printed in 1492, and millions of copies have been sold since then. It was pulled out of schools in 1901, but the theories and principles remained the same, simply rewritten in a modern form.

If you use material from this paper, please acknowledge it. Euclidean Geometry Ever wondered where the geometry you studied in high school came from? Well, most beginning courses in geometry derive their origins from the works of Euclid, a Greek mathematician who lived around 300 B.C.E. Euclid developed his form of geometry, referred to as Euclidean geometry, in Alexandria Egypt. This paper we will shed a little more light on Euclid and his works. First, we will learn a little about the man know as Euclid of Alexandria and the development behind his works. Then we will explore what Euclid is most well known for, his thirteen books or Euclid’s Elements Within these books are the famous five postulates. Next, we will explore some of his other missing and debatable works. Finally, we will look at the challenges to Euclidean geometry such as Non-Euclidean and Hyperbolic geometry. Euclid of Alexandria First, let’s explore Euclid the man. Little is know about the origin of Euclid, better know as Euclid of Alexandria.
