Paul Epstein was brought up in a Jewish family in Frankfurt where his father was a professor at the Philanthropin Academy. After submitting a thesis on abelian functions , he received his doctorate in 1895 from the University of Strasbourg. The city was German at this time (and called Strassburg) and it had been since it was annexed by Germany during the Franco-German War of 1870-71. From 1895 to 1918 he remained in Strasbourg, teaching at the Technical School and also at the University where he had been appointed a Privatdozent. During World War I he did military service. At the end of the war in 1918, however, the city of Strasbourg reverted to France, and Epstein, being German, was forced to leave Alsace. He returned to his native city of Frankfurt. Epstein was appointed to a non-tenured post at the university and he lectured in Frankfurt from 1919. Later he was appointed professor at Frankfurt. On 30 January 1933, however, Hitler came to power and on 7 April 1933 the Civil Service Law provided the means of removing Jewish teachers from the universities, and of course also to remove those of Jewish descent from other roles. All civil servants who were not of Aryan descent (having one grandparent of the Jewish religion made someone non-Aryan) were to be retired. However, there was an exemption clause which exempted non-Aryans who had fought for Germany in World War I. Epstein certainly qualified under this clause and this allowed him to keep his lecturing post in Frankfurt in 1933.

Hello Paul, I was looking through this web site the other day and saw your name. I hope is well with you and your family. I had talked with Brian Cassie a couple months ago and he mentioned that there was to be reunion the 4th of July. Unfortunately Theresa and I had to be at a wedding in Michigan for the weekend. I saw a note in your guestbook from Anne Petkiewich, She was always such a nice person. It was nice to see that her life appears to be to going well. Theresa's mom told me that David Liben had died. What happened? Well I hope all is well with you. write some day if you get a chance. Best Regards Gary top

Paul McKinnon: no stranger to terrorism
PM

COMPERE: The man who will run the massive Olympic security apparatus in September is no stranger to dealing with terrorism.
Commander Paul McKinnon is a former bomb squad officer who was present after the Hilton bombing.
Today the Olympic security operation formally begins with the police and army searching Olympic venues for bomb threats.
This afternoon Olympic reporter Rafael Epstein spoke to the man in charge of the twelve and a half thousand strong Olympic security force.
RAFAEL EPSTEIN: Paul McKinnon is an astute and analytical policeman and he looks like the sort of cop that if your child was caught shoplifting you'd really like him to be the one to catch them - stern and intimidating but with an understanding of human weakness.
Despite the scandals associated with the Games the criticisms about how much it costs and even in the face of the huge task of looking after the Olympic millions he sees the Games as the property of the people.
PAUL MCKINNON: My personal view is this: That it doesn't really matter how we got it, who built it, who owns it, or who runs it, the ordinary folk of my city, my state and my country at the end of it, they'll make something good of it and I'm extraordinarily confident that they'll say it was fabulous and good for the health of the world. I know that will happen.

Beazley backs Keating attack on foreign policy
The World Today
- Monday, October 4, 1999 12:10
COMPERE: Australian troops on the ground in East Timor might have bipartisan support from our politicians, but the Prime Minister's foreign policies stands towards the region certainly doesn't have bipartisan support in Parliament. The Opposition Leader, Kim Beazley, has backed comments by former Prime Minister Paul Keating, that the Prime Minister's foreign policy on East Timor is being driven by domestic concerns.
Mr Howard has angrily denied Paul Keating's assertion that the troop deployment was motivated by domestic politics. But Mr Beazley says the allegation is proven by the Prime Minister not attending the South Pacific Forum, saying he's more concerned about staying Australia to do radio talk-back interviews.
At the same time the Shadow Foreign Minister, Laurie Brereton, has told both Paul Keating and former Prime Minister - or former Minister Graham Richardson, to butt-out of the current foreign policy debate. This report compiled by Rafael Epstein.
RAFAEL EPSTEIN: Paul Keating named Shadow Minister, Laurie Brereton, as one of his close friends within the Labor Party. But today Laurie Brereton was telling Paul Keating to stay out of politics.

Sir Jacob Epstein
"...If the emphasis Epstein placed on naturalism, character and expression was a traditional one going back to Rodin, Donatello and the great portraitists of the Ancient world - the Egyptians and Sumerians, the portraits themselves broke new ground. During the 1920s most were not commissioned; they were friends, casual acquaintances and people stopped in the street and asked if they were willing to come to the studio. Amongst them were many...American blacks, Africans, Indians, Asians and people of mixed race - people who, if depicted at all, were treated as 'picturesque' or exotic."

Abstract
"Financial mechanisms to secure rational use of Common Pool Resources (CPRs) are rarely addressed. While implementation plans and Governance structures remain difficult issues, funds and incentives may be needed to achieve measures agreed upon in international conventions. "Resources and incentives may be key to securing the participation of economic and political interests in achieving the goals of the conventions on CPRs, such as those on fisheries, forests, wetlands, water and climate. "This session will address the role of incentives, subsidies and funds, as well as the potential sources of taxing common activities, such as levies on air travel, the Internet, carbon emissions and international currency transactions. "Discussion of the financial architecture to support healthy and sustainable development will include the following areas: A) The regulatory framework;
