"I talk a lot about ape-to-human evolution and all those abrupt climate changes along the way. But mostly I try to extend Darwin's intellectual revolution to brain mechanisms. What sort of darwinian brain wiring allows us, in just a split second, to shape up a better thought?" WILLIAM H. CALVIN, Ph.D., is a theoretical neurobiologist, Affiliate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is the author of 11 books, mostly for general readers, about brains and evolution including The Throwing Madonna The Cerebral Symphony The River That Runs Uphill, The Cerebral Code Conversations with Neil's Brain (with George Ojemann), and How Brains Think . His book with Derek Bickerton, Lingua ex Machina: Reconciling Darwin and Chomsky with the Human Brainwith, is about syntax. The latest, A Brain for All Seasons: Human Evolution and Abrupt Climate Change about paleoanthropology, paleoclimate, and considerations from neurobiology and evolutionary biology. It won the 2002 Phi Beta Kappa book award for science.

William Edge 's parents were both schoolteachers. He was educated at his local school, Stockport Grammar School, and from there he went to Cambridge where he studied mathematics at Trinity College. After graduating, he continued working for his doctorate at Trinity on projective geometry . Cambridge was at that time a centre for geometry research with Baker 's school flourishing there. Edge's fellow students included P du Val and J G Semple but other famous geometers joined the group while Edge was at Cambridge including the slightly younger men H S M Coxeter and J A Todd After holding a fellowship at Trinity he was offered a lectureship at the University of Edinburgh by E T Whittaker which he accepted and took up the post in 1932. Edge was to spend the rest of his career at Edinburgh and David Monk, writing in [1], suggests that the reason that Edge never moved to a chair in another university was because:- ... the Scottish hills and mountains, which he loved, kept him in Edinburgh.

The launch of Sputnik in
1957 forced the United States into the space race. Fighting in the Cold War the Americans needed to show the world that they too could launch a rocket into space - and they had to do it quickly. Less than three months later Explorer 1 was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The man behind it: William Pickering from Wellington, New Zealand.

Here Pickering attended Havelock Primary School, the second school of the greatest New Zealand scientist, Ernest Rutherford The Road to Caltech
After high school Pickering studied engineering at Canterbury University. He completed one year of study before an uncle (who divided his time between living in New Zealand and California), encouraged him to apply to the

In the Georgia Artillery units is William H. Edge. This is William Henry Harrison Edge, son of Simpson Edge and Eveline Penn. I think you have the following information: W.H.H. (Henry) Enlisted in 11th Georgia Artillery Battalion (Sumter Flying Artillery) at Americus, Ga, on July 6, 1861. He served under Major Allen S. Cutts along with his brother-in-law Wm. W. English, who died of disease in camp near Manassas Junction, Va. on 30 Sept. 1861. Henry was wounded at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, and surrendered at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. He was not the substitute for W. L. Edge, his younger brother Warren Lee, who was 15 years old when W.H.H. enlisted. After the war, Henry served as Justice of the Peace and Notary Public in Georgia before moving to Texas in 1876 or 1877.

Frye Art Museum

Seattle, WA, USA
A selection of direct and challenging portraits and landscapes by contemporary artist William Beckman are on view at the Frye in Painting on the Edge: The Art of William Beckman Aug. 2 - October 27.  Beckman paints himself, loved-ones, and the land he has lived upon.  His subjects, whether mother or lover, are delivered to the viewer with gripping details, without embellishment.  His work, whether of a spouse, or parent, partner or friend, is the product of a long-term relationship between artist and subject.  These relationships are what inspire the content on all of Beckmans work and in a room full of work by Beckman, it becomes clear that this content is deeply felt. Beckman creates his figurative art using a unique method.  He applies paint, then shaves off layer after layer from the surface with a razor, repainting and polishing the canvas to create lustrous, absorbing images.  His realism is stripped of sentiment, his un-idealized portraits scrupulously rendered and his expansive tracts of farmland theatrically scaled. Each painting is epic in significance and matter-of-fact at the same time. The exhibition is organized by the Frye Art Museum and includes works with these themes: boxes, couples, landscapes, drawings, portraits, and figures. Works from Beckmans earliest period consist of a series of boxes (from 1967 to 1970) depicting solitary female nudes within imaginary domestic interiors. Later, he created frontal images, primarily of his former wife Diana. In many cases these figures are riveting, the model virtually staring down the viewer.

COMPETING FOR CONSCIOUSNESS: How Subconscious Thoughts Cook on the Backburner
A Talk by William H. Calvin Introduction by
John Brockman
According to theoretical neuroscientist Bill Calvin, treating consciousness solely as awareness or attention greatly underestimates it, ignoring the temporary levels of organization associated with higher intellectual function. "The tasks that require consciousness," he says, "tend to be the ones that demand a lot of resources. Routine tasks can be handled on the back burner but dealing with ambiguity, groping around offline, generating creative choices, and performing precision movements may temporarily require substantial allocations of neocortex." Recently, Calvin has proposed "a specific mechanism (consciousness as the current winner of Darwinian copying competitions in association cortex) that seems capable of encompassing the higher intellectual function aspects of consciousness as well as some of the attentional aspects. It includes features such as a coding space appropriate for analogies and a supervisory Darwinian process that can bias the operation of other Darwinian processes." "Competing for Consciousness", derived in part from Calvin's 1996 book

William Hudson
SNOWY MOUNTAINS ENGINEER
Over 100,000 workers, displaced after World War Two, from more than 30 countries, were brought in during the course of the scheme. The experience of work at Snowy and the sheer migrant numbers moved the Australian population from stolidly British and Anglo-Saxon to determinedly multi-cultural. The man in charge of the scheme, New Zealander William Hudson, told workers when he toured Europe’s displaced persons camps and offered work twenty-four thousand miles away: "You won’t be Balts or Slavs … you will be men of Snowy". Born in Nelson, New Zealand, in 1896, Hudson was educated at Nelson College and studied civil engineering at London University. When Hudson told his father of his decision to study engineering, the response was, "Bill, that's all you're bloody well good for" - an ironic understatement for the man who was to forge one of the world's great engineering feats. When war was declared he enlisted in the British army to fight in World War One. After the war he graduated with first class honours and completed post-graduate study in France before working for a large British engineering firm, Armstrong Whitworth. The Chosen One
In the post-war 1940's Australia's acute needs for water, power, labour and capital were the most important challenges it faced. As demands for agricultural exports increased and the manufacturing sector boomed, irrigation and power became pressing concerns. Despite opposition to the project, these concerns, along with a perceived need to modernise industrially and defend against the communist threat, determined that the scheme must go ahead.

You are visitor to this page! Hi my name is William Chan. I go to North Canyon High school. I enjoy playing real time war strategy games, Rpg (Role Playing Games), and I also like to write. Here in my web page there will be a lot of reviews on games so far I have reviews on "Starcraft", " and "Tekken 3." There will be more writing stuff such as short stories, poems and helpful writing hints in the future. Thanks for Visiting The "Writer's Edge" Here is the format: Name: the Name of the game Publisher: Who published this game Format: What system was it on? i.e. PC, playstation etc. Demo or Full: Tells whether I played a demo of the game or the full version Review: What is the game about and how it plays Opinion: What I though about the game = Best, 2 = Good, 1 = O.K., = Not good, 2 = Horrible, = worthless piece of Cr@P!!!!! Name: Metal Gear Solid Publisher: Konami Format: Playstation Demo or Full?: Demo Metal Gear Solid. The 32 bit playstations version of the old nintendo Metal Gear series. You play as secret agent Solid Snake and you must make your way through secret millitary facilities undetected and alive. The game main focus is on stealth and outwitting opponets. In the demo version I have played you start off with nothing but your hands and must sneak your way past four armed guards to get to an elevator. This is a very difficult task since you have no weapons and the guards are very responsive to noise. In the game were just little water puddles but if you step on them they spash and the noise will alert the guards. I think this is a pretty good game. But I can only give so much information from a demo. I suggest you rent this one at a local video store and give it a try.
