Peter Gustav Lejeune-Dirichlet

Description
Dirichlet (1805-1859) is well known for his significant contributions to several branches of mathematics. In number theory, for instance, he proved the conjecture by Gauss that there are infinitely many primes in any arithmetic progression such that the first term and the relative difference are relatively prime. He introduced Dirichlet series to analytic number theory, a tool which continues to be important today. In analysis, he is remembered for his work in potential theory, especially his study of harmonic functions with prescribed boundary values, now known as the Dirichlet problem. He is also known for his work on trigonometric series, in particular his rigorous proofs of conditions for their convergence which settled Cauchy's objections to Fourier's earlier work. He also made contributions to the theory of ideals. The two volumes of Dirichlet's Collected Works are published here in a single volume. Certain handwritten manuscripts from Dirichlet's Nachlass have been included by the editors: Kronecker and Fuchs. They have also included some of the mathematical correspondence that Dirichlet had with Gauss and Kronecker.

    Peter Gustav
    allemand, 1805-1859

Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet (1805-1859) Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet was born in Düren, then in the French Empire, but now in western Germany, on 13 February 1805 and was educated at the University of Göttingen, where Carl Friedrich Gauss was one of his mentors. He was fluent in both French and German and as such was often involved in communicating ideas between French and Geman mathematicians. He made major contributions in the fields of number theory, analysis and mechanics, and taught in the Universities of Breslau (1827) and Berlin (1828-1855) before succeeding Gauss at the University of Göttingen. It was Dirichlet who proposed (in 1837) the Theorem in his name which states the exisence of an infinite number of primes in any arithmetic series a b b b na b , in which neither of a nor b are divisible by the other. For example, 5, 11, 17, 23 and 29 are among the primes of the form 6 n Independently, he and Legendre independently proved Fermat's Last Theorem for the case n =5, reportedly using an idea suggested by Sophie Germain. Actually, Dirichlet's proof was published in 1825 and reportedly had an error which was corrected by Legendre. He developed the theory of units in algebraic number theory and made major contributions to the theory of ideals.

Dirichlet, Johan Peter Gastav Lejeune (18051859) Dirichlet was a German mathematician who studied at a Jesuit college and then at the Collège de France. He became a tutor for the royalty of France and met many famous mathematicians. Although Dirichlet's main interest was in number theory, he also contributed in calculus and physics. Dirichlet returned to Germany in 1826 and taught at the military academy and the University of Berlin. He was good friends with colleague Carl Jacobi Dirichlet investigated the solution and equilibrium of systems of differential equations and discovered many results on the convergence of series In 1855, Dirichlet succeeded Gauss as the professor of mathematics at Göttingen.
