Augustus De Morgan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Augustus De Morgan June 27 March 18 ) was an Indian-born British mathematician and logician . He proved an important result that intersection and union of sets were dual under complementation
ie: complement( S intersect T ) == complement(S) union complement(T) and complement( S union T ) == complement(S) intersect complement(T)
These are known as De Morgan's Laws

Essay on Probabilities, Elements of Algebra, Formal Logic, or the Calculus of Inference Necessary and Probable,
and Differential and Integral Calculus, are among the works which made him distinguished, but which show but a small part of his intellectual activity. He was a constant contributor to various periodicals, to the from 1840; and by no means on mathematical subjects alone. His contributions to Knight's are a considerable proportion of the entire work. "He passed for diversion's sake from one arduous study to another"; but found time to acquire a good degree of proficiency as an instrumental performer, and was a habitual and eager reader of novels, especially of humorous novels. As a mathematician he had the rare merit of not overestimating his favorite science, though he proved by his Formal Logic that it was not incompatible for a mathematician to be also a logician; and he was accordingly one of the weightiest adherents that Spiritualism has ever won over. A treatise of his on these manifestations, entitled From Matter to Spirit

Sir W. R. Hamilton
By Augustus De Morgan
An obituary published in the Gentleman's Magazine and Historical Review , vol. I. (new series) (1866), pp. 128-134. Sept. 2, 1865. At Dublin, aged 60, Sir William Rowan Hamilton, Astronomer-Royal for Ireland. An old article in a review , written on the subject of this memoir, reminds its readers that each of the three kingdoms has its Sir William Hamilton. The Englishman was noted for his patronage of art; the Scotchman was among the first in philosophy; and the Irishman was among the first in mathematics. In this race it is clear that England, if placed at all, comes in a bad third. Her representative is sufficiently described in the view quoted, as ``holding a distinguished place among the virtuosos of his time.'' But Scotland and Ireland have added each a great man to the rolls of fame, and each honours the memory of one of those who make lasting marks upon the subjects which they studied. Those subjects are so different that no comparison can be made. William Rowan Hamilton belonged to a branch of the Scotch family, which settled in the North of Ireland in the time of James I. He was born August 4, 1805

Augustus De Morgan (1806 - 1871)
