The Life of Charles Coulomb Charles Augustin de Coulomb was born on June 14, 1736 in Angouleme, France. At the age of 25 he graduated from Ecole du Genie at Mezieres and went on to serve as a military engineer in the West Indies. During the French Revolution he retired to Blois to further research magnetism, friction, and electricity. He served as "Engineer to the King" in Paris, helping to design and construct many Parisian structures. He was admitted to the Academy of Science as a reward for appying newly discovered calculus in this work. Coulomb died on August 23, 1806 in Paris. To the top Coulomb's Contributions While living in Paris, Coulomb researched the friction of machinery, windmills, and the elasticity of metal and silk fibers. He developed his theories while attempting to investigate the law of electrical repulsions. It was then that he discovered what is now known as Coulomb's Law, which states:

Charles-Augustin Coulomb Physicien français né le 14 juin 1736 à Angoulême en 1736, mort le 23 août à Paris en 1806. Son père Henry Coulomb est alors inspecteur des Domaines du Roy. Très jeune il fait preuve de réelles dispositions pour les mathématiques ce qui lui vaudra d'entrer en conflit avec sa mère qui voulait faire de lui un médecin et qui lui refusera par la suite toute aide financière. Il entre dans l'armée du Corps Royal et Militaire du Génie et en 1760 est promu lieutenant en second à l'Ecole de Mézières puis reçu Ingénieur ordinaire du Roy le 12 novembre 1761 (Louis XV qui règnera de 1723 à 1774). Avide d'action il demande à être envoyé en Amérique et en février 1764, il débarque à la Martinique du vaisseau "Le Brillant". On lui confie de nombreuses constructions dont celle du Fort-Bourbon. Il s'intéresse aux moyens de construire sous eau des ouvrages et publie en 1776 un mémoire sur la statique des voûtes. Mais le climat difficile de la Martinique l'oblige à rentrer en France où sa santé ne se rétablira jamais complètement. En 1779, il partage avec Van Swinden un prix de l'Académie des Sciences pour ses travaux sur la meilleure manière de fabriquer des aiguilles aimantées.

Charles Augustin COULOMB (1736 - 1806) Charles Coulomb, el más grande físico francés en cuyo honor la C unidad de carga eléctrica se denomina coulomb, nació en Angoulême en 1736. Fue educado en la École du Génie en Mézieres y se graduó en 1761 como ingeniero militar con el grado de primer teniente. Coulomb sirvió en las Indias Occidentales durante nueve años, donde supervisó la construcción de fortificaciones en la Martinica. En 1774, Coulomb se convirtió en un corresponsal de la Academia de Ciencias de París. Compartió el primer premio de la Academia por su artículo sobre las brújulas magnéticas y recibió también el primer premio por su trabajo clásico acerca de la fricción, un estudio que no fue superado durante 150 años. Durante los siguientes 25 años, presentó 25 artículos a la Academia sobre electricidad, magnetismo, torsión y aplicaciones de la balanza de torsión, así como varios cientos de informes sobre ingeniería y proyectos civiles. Coulomb aprovechó plenamente los diferentes puestos que tuvo durante su vida. Por ejemplo, su experiencia como ingeniero lo llevó a investigar la resistencia de materiales y a determinar las fuerzas que afectan a objetos sobre vigas, contribuyendo de esa manera al campo de la mecánica estructural.
