Um 4.30 Uhr morgens brach dann der kleinste Besanmast etwas in der Mitte durch, und gegen acht stürzte auch der große Mast in die stürmische See und riß die Segelstange des großen Toppsegels mit sich. D S ie machten in Hafen von Brest fest,um ihre Havarien zu reparieren; Bougainville war über seine Situation nicht gerade begeistert. Er schrieb in sein Bordtagebuch: "Unsere Masten sind viel zu hoch für eine Reise, wie wir sie vorhaben. Die Form des Schiffs selbst läßt zu wenig weite für den Winkel zu, den die Wanten mit den Masten bilden, die obendrein selbst nicht gut genug befestigt sind. Dieser Mangel wird noch durch die Art unserer Ladung (eine große Menge Lebensmittel) erschwert, die ein beträchtliches Gewicht darstellt und tief unter dem Schwerpunkt des Schiffs liegt, wodurch das Mastwerk auch beim geringsten Schlingern in Gefahr ist."

The notion of the "Noble savage" had some of its roots in the reports given by members of Bougainville's expedition of their short time on the island of Tahiti. Born in Paris in 1729, he started the first settlement in the Iles Malouines (Falkland Islands); he led a voyage around the world in the 1760s; he fought in the American War of Independence; he wrote mathematical treatises and was elected to scientific academies; and he survived a duel and the French Revoloution to become a friend of Napoleon and grow roses. After his death in 1811 he had islands, mountains and plants named after him. It is thought that the Bougainvilles originally came from the Picardy region of France, north of Paris, though when the family moved to Paris is uncertain. A small village a few kilometres east of Amiens is called Bougainville. The family lived at 21 Rue de la Barre du Bec (it later became part of the Rue du Temple) near the Chatelet where Pierre-Yves was a notary. Their first child was Jean-Pierre, born on 1 December 1722 and he was followed in 1727 by the only daughter, Marie-Francoise, named after her mother.

Hordern House BOUGAINVILLE, Louis Antoine de Together three volumes, octavo, the 'Voyage' in two volumes, with 24 maps and plates; half-titles in all three volumes; in fine contemporary French bindings of mottled calf, spines gilt, gilt arms on covers. The first French account of Cook's first voyage and the revised edition of Bougainville's narrative: a beautiful set in original French bindings with uniform provenance from a noble European library. The two works in three volumes were published as a coherent set, and the three volumes here have clearly always formed a set, with matching library labels showing continuous numbering, and matching coats-of-arms in gilt on their covers. Their bindings are complementary though not precisely uniform: exactly the same spine tools are used for the third volume, though in a sightly different pattern, while the edges of the third volume are stained red unlike the sprinkled blue edges of the first two. The first two volumes of the set contain the revised and augmented version of Bougainville's narrative of his circumnavigation, which had been published in its quarto format in 1771 (see previous entry). Often considered to be the "best" edition, this second version adds a 'Discours préliminaire' on discoveries in the Pacific since Magellan which takes Cook's First Voyage (1768-71) into account. This copy corresponds to the first of the two distinct settings identified by Du Rietz in the Kroepelien catalogue. The third volume or Supplément contains the first French edition of the earliest published account of Cook's first voyage, the anonymous work nowadays attributed to the midshipman James Magra; the French edition adds an extensive 'Lettre de M. de Commerson à M. de La Lande. De l'île de Bourbon, le 18 avril 1771'. As Du Rietz points out in the Kroepelien catalogue, while there were two issues of this publication, one (as here) describing itself as the supplement to Bougainville's account, there is no evident priority between the two which should rather be seen as simultaneous issues.
