A Presentation By George Dyson
In examining the prospects for artificial intelligence and artificial life Samuel Butler (1835-1902) faced the same mysteries that permeate these two subjects today. "I first asked myself whether life might not, after all, resolve itself into the complexity of arrangement of an inconceivably intricate mechanism," he recalled in 1880, retracing the development of his ideas. "If, then, men were not really alive after all, but were only machines of so complicated a make that it was less trouble to us to cut the difficulty and say that that kind of mechanism was 'being alive,' why should not machines ultimately become as complicated as we are, or at any rate complicated enough to be called living, and to be indeed as living as it was in the nature of anything at all to be? If it was only a case of their becoming more complicated, we were certainly doing our best to make them so." These questions can be distilled into one essential puzzle: the origin of life. "We wanted to know whence came that germ or those germs of life which, if Mr. Darwin was right, were once the world's only inhabitants," asked Butler "They could hardly have come hither from some other world; they could not in their wet, cold, slimy state have traveled through the dry ethereal medium which we call space, and yet remained alive. If they traveled slowly, they would die, if fast, they would catch fire."

NATURAL SELECTIONS George Dyson, the son of scientist Freeman Dyson and brother of computer expert Esther Dyson, is a writer and kayak builder whose innovative book, Darwin Among the Machines , took the computing industry by the horns and shook it into a new shape. His hypothesis takes in forest fires and their relationship with neural networks, the possible evolution or otherwise of the first AI computer, the evolution of the World Wide Web and whether or not it mirrors human evolution. He also posits that Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) was the real thinker in the family, that evolution itself has to be intelligent in order to evolve and that reproduction versus replication is one of the great struggles that science needs to understand. This interview challenges and discusses Dyson's extraordinary viewpoints and is an interesting introduction to this maverick brain.

Darwin - the man and his legacy
Darwin the man and Darwin the legacy cannot be easily separated from one another. To understand his work, it is necessary to know something about his life, and to get a handle on his life without touching on his work would be entirely absurd. To this end, this section of the Evolution Weekend website features a number of articles by Darwin experts and others from a range of fields covering both subjects. the material currently online includes a biographical article by biologist and Darwin expert Dr Adrian Desmond of University College London, an article by the controversial evolution scholar Richard Dawkins, and a Christian response to evolution by vicar and scientist the Reverend Dr Michael Jackson. Don't miss the Real Audio interviews with Randal Keynes, Darwin's great-great-grandson, and with noted American intellectual George Dyson, author of 'Darwin Among the Machines.'

May 22, 2001 - Tuesday - Darwin (Top End), Australia Sunset at the Top End - Darwin, Australia So I am finally at the top end of Australia. I caught the 10:30 bus to the airport and had a chance to say goodbye to Lucy, Jo, and Simon again before I boarded my plane for my uneventful flight. Darwin City is surprisingly small. The streets and gardens are filled with tropical plants - signaling that it will not get cold here and it will not freeze here. It's a good sign. I unpacked and went to tour the city a little bit. There wasn't much going on here and it doesn't look like there's much to do around here. There is a very nice area along the esplanade where you can walk and jog and watch the sunset and that's what I did. One thing I noticed was many people smell here. They stink! Boys and girls, young and old, black and white, all stink. It's like they don't take showers and they never heard of deodorants. May 23, 2001 - Wednesday - Darwin I didn't do much today - I caught a local bus to a huge shopping center to stroll around, but I didn't buy anything. I caught the bus back to Darwin City and decided to book my tour with NTAT (Northern Territory Adventure Tours) again because of their great customer service back at Alice. It was for a 3 day 2 night bus tour. After that's done with, I went back to the hostel and chatted with a very nice and friendly Brit girl name Jean. We talked for a long while and she seemed like a very cool girl to hang out with. She went to the night market and came back to told me that she was talking to a guy there and will be staying with him for a few days for free. His business card says "Bent and Twisted", which was his business, making art shapes out of metallic wires. I thought the name was a little weird and didn't like the sound of it. I composed an email to her right there and asked her to reply to it when she gets it so I know she's OK. I haven't heard from her yet as of May 29th.

May 27, 2001 - Sunday - Darwin, Australia The Mississippi Queen - a train turned into a bar along with a collections of trailers as accommodations - Darwin, Australia I moved into the campervan at the Mississippi Queen today and unpacked and spread my stuff out. I was also able to do laundry and just chilled out a bit. They had pretty good dinner here for only A$9.50, plus it was an open mike night so there were live music from 7 til after 12, which sounded really good. I decided that I really like listening to the live music. There was a girl who sang "Because the Night" and she was really bad. Not many people clapped for her after she sang. May 28, 2001 - Monday - Darwin I didn't do much today, just sat around, updated my web site and vegged out. It's nice not to do much for a change and it's nice to have your own place. I must figure out what's making me homesick lately but since I moved to the Mississippi Queen, it hasn't been bad at all. I narrowly avoided Joerg today while he was walking in the streets. He walked right by me - unintentionally or not, it was good. May 29, 2001 - Tuesday - Darwin

Thomas E. Hart
Erasmus Darwin, the grandfather of Charles , deserves credit for his belief in the possibility of the development of species. George Bernard Shaw, in the preface to Back to Methuselah Collected Plays With Prefaces, (New York, 1960) II, xxi), describes Erasmus Darwin as one of the originators of evolutionary theory, and quotes an excerpt from the following passage: For if we may compare infinities, it would seem to require a greater infinity of power to cause the causes of effects, than to cause the effects themselves. This idea is analogous to to the improving excellence observable in every part of the creation; such as in the prgressive increase of the solid or habitable parts of the earth from water; and in the progressive increase of the wisdom and happiness of its inhabitants; and is consonant to the idea of our present siutation being a state of probation, which by our exertion we may improve, and are consequently responsible for our actions. It was one of those moments that almost cost me my company. In the first few years I was blinded by the passion of my idea, and being an entrepreneur, I thought I could conquer any odds single-handedly.
So I flipped it around. I hired people who were not intrigued by my great salesmanship, who would not be enamored with my style or who were even turned off by it. If I mesmerized them in the interview, they were not a candidate.
Then I learned to turn off the high beams and stop playing the role of the enormously charismatic saleswoman. Instead of selling my own ideas, I sat and listened. I let people say no to me, and I accepted it."

Vale George Brown - Darwin Lord Mayor 1992-2002
George Brown was born on 29 July 1929 in Paddington, New South Wales. He was the first of four children born to a Scotsman from Glasgow and a French Canadian woman with Sioux Indian ancestry. Educated at Burnside Central, Sydney to matriculation level, he later qualified by correspondence at Ryde School of Horticulture in greenkeeping. By all accounts the youth of George Brown was completed in hard times. In a light hearted reflection on his youth George said, “My father brewed his own rum, and rum was cheaper than milk, and my breakfast food, the old biscuits, were soaked in rum rather than milk. I can remember my mother when I was about 12 years old saying, “You were the quietest baby that I’ve ever had or ever seen.” And I said, “For God’s sake mother, I was drunk for the first five years.” The irrepressible character that was George Brown then had a number of colourful occupations including seaman, plant operator, woolpresser, drover’s cook, share farmer, station hand, kangaroo shooter, horse-breaker and butcher. He would often recount many of his life’s experiences based on his time in those differing professions. George Brown arrived in Darwin in 1968. He fell in love with the city and, despite having a public service job back in his home state of New South Wales he sent a note to his then boss saying, “Am not returning.”
