    Modern Developments

    1. Introduction The development of perspective had fundamental consequences for science, art, the environment and the imagination. Each of these domains will be considered in turn in the chapters that follow. 2. Astronomy Ever since the Babylonians, there had been observation of the heavens and, already in Antiquity, there were instruments to observe the apparent motions of the planets and stars. Yet the focus of attention was on finding a pattern for phenomena such as eclipses of the sun and moon. Since the heavens were assumed to be unchanging, astronomy became primarily a conceptual problem of accounting for a set of recurring events. Indeed, once a basic catalogue of stars visible to the naked eye had been made, there was little incentive to look more closely. Hence, paradoxically, although ancient astronomy produced various instruments for observation of the heavens, it remained in many ways unvisual: a question of deceptive appearances1 rather than of visual truth. The development of the planisphere and astrolabe2 imposed a deductive grid on the heavens, not unlike that of Ptolemy's projection in his

De pictura are without illustrations). Alberti's text has given rise to at least three different interpretations. By reconstructing these three different versions of the same text, it is possible to see and assess their relative merits. De prospectiva pingendi offers a case in point. When Piero described the construction of a foreshortened octagon he relied on the presence of a static diagram and thus drew a series of lines the significance of which remained unclear until the diagram was nearly complete. Using a computer one can retrace these steps precisely. In addition, with the aid of coloured lines one can use a different sequence of steps in order to make visible Piero's method in a new way. de ludo geometrico ), which again involves a surprisingly small number of basic forms combined in various ways. Using a computer one can reconstruct these shapes, see their equivalences both visually in terms of geometry and mathematically in terms of computed areas. Moreover one can see which subset of potential combinations he actually studied. A computer thus permits more than a simple recreation of the activities of historical individuals: it enables us to picture their horizons and the limitations thereof.

    Scientific Propositions in a Landscape
There is a genre in the illustration of books where scientific propositions are explained diagramatically but also set within a recognisable landscape. The fusion doesn't have to be between realism and the geometric. Bernard Picart, illustration to from The Works of Fontenelle click for enlargement In cartography, there is often a combination of the Illusionistic and the Diagrammatic. In P.J.Garidel's Histoire des Plantes... Aix and Paris, 1719, the illustrations site the specimens above the landscape in a most interesting way. A calendar is an instrument of society. Frequently offering guidance on weather and agricultural regimes, a calendar determines or influences the timing of religious festivals, civil and personal celebrations, the term of loans and contracts - anything, in fact, which is repeated cyclically or is set to occur or expire at some particular moment in the future. Apart from the day, a fundamental unit of human existence, a calendar may be constructed with regard to almost any combination of natural and artificial periods: weeks, lunar months, calendar months, solar and sidereal years, etc. Much astronomical work has been motivated by the need to maintain an existing calendar or establish the basis of a new one. In particular, astronomers have served calendrics through observations of the occurrences of particular phenomena (equinoxes, solstices, new moons, heliacal star risings) and the determination of the astronomical units of time and the relationship between them.

Of course it is unreasonable to put together a list of the 100 most important books of the century. On the other hand, it is a lot of fun for a scientific bibliophile like me to think and argue about what ought to be on such a list. I think that the Morrisons may have given a few of the good books a status of excellence they probably don't deserve, but I was also delighted to see that some of my favorites (Gamov's "One Two Three ... Infinity" and Monod's "Chance and Necessity") are included. On the other hand, I would have put in Eigen and Winkler's "The Laws of the Game" and Hofstadter's "Godel, Escher, and Bach". The book list is accompanied by an article "Forced to Choose" (p. 545), in which a number of notable authors (including Roald Hoffman, John McPhee, E. O. Wilson, Berndt Heinrich, Kurt Vonnegut, and Carl Djerassi) express their opinions.
