Jean Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) French deistic philosopher and author; b. at Geneva June 28, 1712; d. at Ermenonville (28 m. n.e. of Paris) July 2, 1778. His mother died at his birth, and his father, a dissipated and violent-tempered man, paid little attention to the son's training, and finally deserted him. The latter developed a passion for reading, with a special fondness for Plutarch's Lives Confessions (Geneva, 1782), may be described as subterranean. He now returned to Paris, where his opera Les Muses galantes failed, copied music, and was secretary of Madame Dupin. Here he came into association with Diderot, Grimm, D'Alembert, Holbach, and Madame d'Epinay, and was admitted as a contributor to the Encyclopedie ; and his gifts of entertainment, reckless manner, and boundless vanity attracted attention. With the Discours sur les sciences et les arts (Paris, 1750), a prize essay in which he set forth the paradox of the superiority of the savage state, he proclaimed his gospel of "back to nature." His operetta Devin du village (1752) met with great success. His second sensational writing appeared

Alembert, Jean Le Rond d' Frenchman d’Alembert was abondoned by his parents as a baby and lived with his adopted parents as a child. He attended the Collège de Quatre-Nations to study the classics, law, and medicine. Later he studied mathematics on his own. He appeared on the scientific scene in 1739, when he sent his first communication to the Académie des sciences. During the next two years he sent the academy five more papers dealing with methods of integrating differential equations and with the motion of bodies in a resisting media. Although he had received little formal scientific education, it is clear that he had become familiar with the works of Newton L’Hospital , and the Bernoullis D’Alembert continued to produce advanced research and published many works on mathematics and mathematical physics. His major work was Trait de dynamique D'Alembert's work made partial differential equations a part of calculus. He considered the derivative as a limit of difference quotients, which put him ahead of his peers in understanding calculus. He also contributed major results in geometry, complex numbers, and probability.

FICHA Nacionalidad: Francia París 1717 - París 1783 Fue hijo no reconocido del general Destouches y de madame de Tencin, quienes lo dejaron en la puerta de la iglesia de Saint-Jean le Rond. Allí, un comisario de policía lo recogió y dio en adopción a la mujer de un vidriero llamado Alembert. Pronto descolló en el conocimiento de las matemáticas, siendo elegido a la temprana edad de veinticuatro años miembro de la Academia de Ciencias de París y, más tarde, de la de Berlín. Su fama de erudito le llevó a recibir invitaciones de Federico II de Prusia y de Catalina la Grande , que sin embargo rechazó. En 1747 comenzó la publicación de la " Enclopedia ", junto con Diderot , escribiendo artículos sobre matemática y literatura, además del "Discurso preliminar". En 1772 se le nombró secretario perpetuo de la Academia Francesa, escribiendo entones los "Elogios", sobre los académicos fallecidos entre 1700 y 1770. Ilustre filósofo, su pensamiento recibe la influencia de Descartes Bacon Newton y Locke . Uno de los máximos exponentes del movimiento ilustrado, concibe las ciencias como un todo integrado y herramienta para el progreso de la Humanidad. Su doctrina la expuso en "Elementos de Filosofía". Como matemático y científico, continuó las obras de Newton y Leibniz y comenzó la investigación sobre las ecuaciones diferenciales con derivadas parciales. También fue el primero en exponer el teorema fundamental del álgebra, más tarde demostrado por Gauss. También realizó estudios en hidrodinámica y mecánica. En este campo formuló el llamado "principio de D´Alembert" que, aplicado al movimiento de la Tierra, permite explicar las variaciones del eje de rotación del globo.
