Professor David Crighton, head of the department of applied mathematics and theoretical physics (DAMTP) at Cambridge University, and master of Jesus College, who has died of cancer aged 57, was for the last decade the undisputed leader of the applied mathematics community in Britain. He was a major figure in the theory of aeroacoustics (aircraft and engine noise and how to control it), linear and nonlinear waves, and structural vibrations; he pioneered research council initiatives for the funding of research in applied nonlinear mathematics; he was instrumental in bringing together all the mathematical organisations in the country so that they could speak with one voice; he initiated a campaign with mathematical educationalists to improve the image of mathematics in schools (the highlight was the "Pop Maths Roadshow"); and he led his department and college with immense energy and vision.

David Crighton Medal
Call for Nominations for David Crighton Medal 2003 In order to pay tribute to the memory of Professor David George Crighton FRS., the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and the London Mathematical Society have resolved to institute jointly an award. The silver gilt medal will be awarded to an eminent mathematician for services both to mathematics and to the mathematical community, who is normally resident in the mathematical community represented by the two organisations on the 1st January of the year of the award. The award will be considered triennially by the Councils of the Institute and the Society, with the first medal being awarded in 2003. The medal-winner will normally be presented with the award at a joint meeting of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and the London Mathematical Society, and will be invited to give a lecture. A David Crighton Medal Committee is being established, comprising three members from the LMS and three from the IMA. The Society’s representatives will be Peter Goddard, Tony Scholl and Marcus Du Sautoy. The Institute members are Professor John McWhirter (IMA President), Professor Tim Pedley and Professor Steve Reid. Members of the Society or Institute are invited to submit their views confidentially in writing to members of the Committee by 1 February 2003. LMS Members:

ADDRESS GIVEN BY J E FFOWCS WILLIAMS AT DAVID CRIGHTON'S MEMORIAL SERVICE, GREAT ST MARY'S CHURCH, CAMBRIDGE
JUNE 3rd, 2000
David George Crighton, whose year-long battle with cancer was lost on 12th April this year, was Master of Jesus College and one of the country's most influential applied mathematicians. He passionately believed that mathematics provided the best way of understanding complex systems and that a good mathematical education was the best route for enabling the most able people to address really important practical problems. He also believed, and amply demonstrated throughout his career, that the practical problems provided one of the best incentives for developing the subject - a subject he really cared about and enjoyed. It was fun to do mathematics with Crighton.
What made David remarkable was the consistency with which he applied a very good memory and a great natural intelligence to very hard work without ever appearing stressed. He had the highest standards of intellectual integrity and a natural humility: qualities that made him approachable and warm and very easy to like and to trust. He rose to the top of his profession and was greatly admired.
His parents saw little in David's background that pointed to mathematical brilliance. Their natural courtesy and charm, which David certainly inherited, made it difficult to be certain that they weren't being modest. He insisted that being born in Wales during wartime did not make him Welsh - I thought him overly-modest on that point.

David George Crighton

November 15, 1942 - April 12, 2000 David George Crighton was born on 15 November 1942 at Llandudno, North Wales. Where his parents had been evacuated to avoid German bombing during WWII. At school he was a brilliant student, showing great talent in Greek, Latin, and ancient history. He then followed a different interest, entering St. John's College in 1961 and graduating in 1964 with Firsts in Parts I and II of the Mathematical Tripos.
David Crighton's scientific interests were diverse as they were penetrating, notably in the areas of aeroacoustics and fluid mechanics. He was particularly talented at developing power methods of analysis for the solution of complicated wave problems, with major contributions made to the quieting of Concorde and to the reduction of sound from submarines. His expertise on asymptotic methods of analysis heavily influenced the field of applied mathematics worldwide. In 1993 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society, and he received numerous honors for his distinguished work, including the Rayleigh Medal of the Institute of Acoustics, the Per Bruel Gold Medal of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Otto Laporte Award of the American Physical Society.
In addition to his major influence in applied mathematics, David Crighton made important contributions to mathematical education in the U.K. With characteristic flair, he introduced two initiatives: One was the idea of a traveling mathematics exhibition; the so-called "Pop Maths Roadshow", which toured around with UK, creating remarkable interest in a topic which is not renowned as part of popular culture. The second was the instigation of a biennial conference concerned with all aspects of teaching mathematics; the first of which was known as the British Congress of Mathematics.

  • Public Orator, Dr David Green and Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Wallace, presented the award to Professor Crighton in Cambridge as he was unable to attend the Degree Congregation on afternoon of Tuesday 8 July 1999.
In 1940 the eminent but eccentric Cambridge mathematician G H Hardy wrote: "the ‘real’ mathematics of the ‘real’ mathematicians … is almost wholly useless." Lest many of our new graduates tear up their certificates and their parents demand their money back we hasten to add that this is not Professor David George Crighton is one of those great applied mathematicians who have contributed to the ongoing technological revolution. He is distinguished for his work on sound waves, developing the mathematics which describes the way they are generated and propagate in gases, liquids and solids. In particular he has extended our understanding of waves generated by large-scale turbulence and the propagation of shock waves, findings particularly important to the aircraft industry. Professor Crighton's scientific interests have resulted in over 120 published papers, and he has given around 450 papers and talks at conferences, seminars etc. and has supervised 25 Ph.D. students to completion with another half-dozen in progress.

Obituary: David Crighton
By John Brindley
It is with the greatest sadness and sense of personal loss that we record the untimely death of David Crighton, at the age of 57, on April 12th. David's contributions to the development of "nonlinear mathematics", and especially of its ubiquitous importance in modern applied mathematics, where, in many situations the essential qualitative character of system behaviour is nonlinear, and not amenable to linear approximations.. His energy and perception led a group of us in Leeds to form in 1984, a Centre for Nonlinear Studies, (CNLS) of which he was properly the first Director. I had the task of succeeding him in 1986 on his departure to Cambridge, but by then the foundations had been laid and momentum generated. David's pressure within the then SERC was important in securing the Nonlinear Science (NLS) Initiative in the next 5 years, and even more so in securing its successor, Applied Nonlinear Mathematics (ANM), whose Scientific Committee I had the privilege of chairing from 1993-96.
