KUN B-faculteit KUN - Wiskunde MacTutor Mijn homepage ... Mijn wiskunde-pagina Niels Henrik Abel In de eerste helft van de negentiende eeuw maakte de wiskunde een grote ontwikkeling door. Die tijd heeft dan ook veel grote wiskundigen opgeleverd zoals Gauss, Poisson, Caucy , Jacobi, Dirichlet, Hamilton Liouville en Galois . Ook de Noorse wiskundige Niels Henrik Abel leefde in die tijd. In zijn korte leven heeft hij veel belangrijke wiskundige ontdekkingen gedaan en dat hadden er nog veel meer kunnen zijn als niet bijna alles in zijn leven hem zo tegenzat. Zo leefde hij in Noorwegen, een land dat niet bepaald het Walhalla van de wiskunde was en moest hij Duits en Frans leren voordat hij met de grote wiskundigen uit zijn tijd kon corresponderen. Verder is Abel altijd zeer arm geweest en daarnaast was hij ook nogal schuchter, wat niet in positieve zin aan zijn wiskundige productiviteit heeft bijgedragen. Inmiddels verhuisd naar Gjerstad, genoot Abel de eerste jaren van zijn leven thuis onderwijs, totdat hij op 13-jarige leeftijd werd toegelaten tot de Cathedral School in Kristiania, het tegenwoordige Oslo . Deze school had juist daarvoor veel leraren verloren aan de pas opgerichte universiteit van Oslo. Onder deze omstandigheden presteerde Abel de eerste jaren niet bijster veel. Hier kwam verandering in nadat zijn wiskunde-docent was ontslagen, na een leerling zodanig te hebben gestraft, dat deze aan de gevolgen daarvan overleed.

Niels Henrik Abel Biography Abelprisen Guidelines The Board Arrangement Events Niels Henrik Abel A Short Biography Although when Abel's father died in 1820 the family was left in straitened circumstances, the boy was able to enter the University of Christiania (Oslo) in 1821 because his teacher contributed and raised funds. He obtained a preliminary degree from the university in 1822 and continued his studies independently with further subsidies obtained by his teacher. His first papers, published in 1823 in the new periodical Magazin for Naturvidenskaberne, were on functional equations and integrals, his solution of an integral equation being the first. Abel's friends urged the Norwegian government to grant him a fellowship for study in Germany and France. While waiting for the royal decree to be issued, in 1824 he published at his own expense his proof of the impossibility of solving algebraically the general equation of the fifth degree, which he hoped would bring him recognition. He sent the pamphlet to Gauss, who dismissed it, failing to recognize that the famous problem had indeed been settled. Arriving in Paris in the summer of 1826, he called on the foremost mathematicians and completed a memoir on transcendental functions. This major work presented a theory of integrals of algebraic functions, in particular the result known as Abel's theorem: there is a finite number, or genus, of independent integrals of this nature. This theorem is the basis for the later theory of Abelian integrals and Abelian functions. Abel was accepted with restrained civility in Paris, for his work was still unknown. He submitted his memoir for presentation to the Academy of Sciences, hoping to establish his reputation, but he waited in vain. Before leaving Paris, thinking he had a persistent cold, Abel consulted a physician, who informed him he had tuberculosis.

Niels Henrik Abel (1802-1829), Norwegian mathematician , was born at Findoe on the 25th of August 1802. In 1815 he entered the cathedral school at Christiania (as Oslo was then called), and three years later he gave proof of his mathematical genius by his brilliant solutions of the original problems proposed by Bernt Holmboe. About this time, his father, a poor Protestant minister, died, and the family was left in straitened circumstances; but a small pension from the state allowed Abel to enter Christiania University in 1821. His first notable work was a proof of the impossibility of solving the quintic equation by radicals. (See Abel-Ruffini theorem .)
