Short Biography
I was born, raised, and educated in New Orleans, La, receiving my BS from Loyola University in 1961. In 1965 I got a PhD from LSU and began my career as a mathematician at Indiana University where I remained until I accepted the job here as head of the department in 1990. I spent my first sabbatical in 1972 at the Free University of Amsterdam, and I have spent summers at Berkeley (1968) and the University of Grenoble (1981). I have had 19 PhD students. Here are some photos of me and my students taken at the SEAM 2000 at the University of Virginia.
Books
I have written a new book, A Course in Operator Theory , published by the American Mathematical Society in its Graduate Studies in Mathematics series. This book assumes familiarity with basic functional analysis through Banach algebras. Here is an AMS-TeX file with the Table of Contents

John H Conway 's father was a chemistry laboratory assistant. John became interested in mathematics at a very early age and his mother recalled that he could recite the powers of two when aged four years. John's young years were difficult for he grew up in Britain at a time of wartime shortages. At primary school John was outstanding and he topped almost every class. Despite not having any clear idea of what mathematics was when he was at primary school, John Conway must have had it firmly fixed in his mind that he would become a mathematician. When he went to be interviewed at age eleven before entering secondary school he was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up and he replied that he wanted to be a mathematician at Cambridge. He excelled at secondary school, not in all his subjects but certainly his performance in mathematics was by far the best of any of the pupils. Mathematics was not the only subject which interested him, however, for he also had spells of deep interest in astronomy and at other times in fossils. The interest in astronomy has remained with him and he lists it as one of his interests today. After leaving seconday school, Conway entered Gonville and Caius College Cambridge to study mathematics. He was awarded his BA in 1959 and began to undertake research in

Guestbook John Conway John Conway John Conway Father John Conway was born in Manhattan, New York City, on May 13, 1930, to Edmund and Mary Gaine Conway. His early education was at St. Bernard's High School and St. Joseph's Juniorate. He entered the Christian Brothers in 1948 and had graduate education at Catholic University and Manhattan College. As a Christian Brother, he taught High School from 1953 until 1969. He entered Maryknoll at the Hingham Novitiate in September 1970. Having already completed extensive theological studies as a Christian Brother, he served a three-year probation period consisting of a year at the Hingham novitiate and two years in an Overseas Training Program in Tanzania, where he had previously worked as a Christian Brother for six years. He was ordained a Maryknoll priest at Maryknoll, New York, on May 19, 1973. In July 1973, Father Conway took up his mission work in the Maryknoll Africa Region. In 1975, he was assigned to the Maryknoll Society team for work with the National Pastoral and Catechetical Institute in Juba, Sudan. In March 1978, he was assigned to the Samoa Mission Unit where he served as Rector and teacher at Moamoa Theological College, a diocesan formation institute for seminarians, sisters and catechists in Western Samoa.

John H. Conway Receives Nemmers Prize
John H. Conway, von Neumann Professor of Mathematics at Princeton University, has been awarded the 1997-98 Frederic Esser Nemmers Prize in Mathematics from Northwestern University.
The Nemmers Prize in Mathematics is awarded to scholars who display "outstanding achievement in their discipline as demonstrated by major contributions to new knowledge or the development of significant new modes of analysis." The prize carries a $100,000 stipend and is presented every other year to a scholar who displays work of lasting significance in mathematics.
Conway, one of the preeminent theorists in the study of finite groups and one of the world’s foremost knot theorists, is the author of more than 10 books and more than 130 journal articles on a wide variety of mathematical subjects. He has also done important work in number theory, game theory, coding theory, tiling, and the

Since his retirement from NASA in December 1996, Mr. Conway has served as a management consultant to aerospace and information management companies. In this capacity he has provided expertise with strategic planning, evaluation and development of management and contracting approaches, and proposal development and management. He has contributed significantly to a number of successful proposal efforts resulting in NASA contracts by providing assessment of bid opportunities, proposal management and integration, proposal development, cost strategy development, and participation in and management of proposal management reviews. Mr. Conway also has participated in aerospace technology studies to assist in determining future U.S. marketplace demands, developing NASA’s future operations strategies, serving as a management advisor to resolve customer and organizational management issues, and providing research grant assistance to Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Other Minority Institutions. John Conway holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Florida State University and a Masters in Mathematics from the College of William and Mary. In addition, he has participated in numerous management training programs both as a student and lecturer. He had a continuous record of outstanding performance ratings since being selected for Senior Executive Service in 1979. During his tenure with NASA, he was also awarded NASA's Exceptional Service Medal, three NASA Outstanding Leadership Medals, the 1990 Presidential Meritorious Executive Award, and the 1995 Presidential Distinguished Executive Award.

PRO-DAIRY is a broad-based business management curriculum for all of the players in the New York Dairy Industry. Dairy producers, agriservice (those people in support of the dairy farm business) and most recently, youth bound for careers in either production or agriservice are served directly by the program. PRO-DAIRY has a mandate to embrace and shape change. They have a ten-year legacy of measured, positive economic and social impact on the lives of the industry's people. John brings 20 years of practical dairy management skills to the team, including 16 years as an extension dairy specialist/educator in Wisconsin, New Hampshire and New York and 4 years as a dairy management consultant in south-central Wisconsin. Henry C. Ogle, Sr. was the son of Jesse and Elizabeth Conway Ogle. Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Anna Sutton Conway, Jr. and John, Jr. the son of John and Elizabeth Bridgewater Conway. These letters have proven to be an invaluable resource for genealogists and historians. Most of the letters were written to George Pohlman, Jr. who was married to another Conway descendant. There is, however, a letter written to Dr. Samuel Conway, another great-grandson of John and Elizabeth Conway. Also included, is a letter written by George Pohlman to the Wisconsin State Library summarizing information he had collected from various sources but referring to the letters of Mr. Ogle. The reader is encouraged to read all of the letters in their entirety. Although some of the information may seem repetitive, new facts are frequently added in the different writings. Also, there are some inconsistencies among the letters so a complete reading is necessary to avoid erroneous conclusions. The letters presented were written between 1903 to 1917. Researchers have since been able to clarify facts and add new information.

John Conway says in the preface to this book that he wrote it to tell about the realationships between two of his favorite subjects: theories of transfinite numbers and mathematical games. Many of us have used logic and numbers to explain how to win a game, but mathematician Conway was not about to do something so ordinary. In this book he takes that idea and turns it inside out by showing how games can be used to describe numbers. Just play these games and try to win. As you understand the games and become expert at playing them, you will be building tools for understanding numbers and becoming an expert at playing with them. Describe what you understand about the games. Use words and pictures that make sense to you and your friends.

The Game
The Game of Life is not your typical computer game. It is a 'cellular automaton', and was invented by Cambridge mathematician John Conway. This game became widely known when it was mentioned in an article published by Scientific American in 1970. It consists of a collection of cells which, based on a few mathematical rules, can live, die or multiply. Depending on the initial conditions, the cells form various patterns throughout the course of the game To see John Conway's Game of Life, you need a Java-compatible browser. And of course Java-support has to be turned on. Browsers supporting Java are:
The Rules
For a space that is 'populated':
Each cell with one or no neighbors dies, as if by loneliness.
Each cell with four or more neighbors dies, as if by overpopulation.
Each cell with two or three neighbors survives.
For a space that is 'empty' or 'unpopulated'
Each cell with three neighbors becomes populated.
The Controls
Choose a figure from the pull-down menu or make one yourself by clicking on the cells with a mouse. A new generation of cells (corresponding to one iteration of the rules) is initiated by the 'Next' button. The 'Start' button advances the game by several generations. Game speed is regulated by the Slow-Fast-Hyper pull-down menu.
