George Chrystal
Professor George Chrystal
Mathematician and academic. Born in Old Meldrum and educated at the Grammar School and University in Aberdeen, excelling in both institutions. He studied under James Clerk Maxwell (1831-79) at Cambridge. Appointed to the Regius Chair of Mathematics at St. Andrews, he became a regular contributor to the Encyclopaedia Britannica. In 1879, he accepted the Chair in Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh. Perhaps Chrystal's greatest contribution was in educational reform. He was an enthusiastic contributor to the framing of The Universities (Scotland) Act, 1889 which liberalised University constitutions and curricula. Chrystal was instrumental in the introduction in 1888 of a Leaving Certificate Examination common to all schools. He died in Edinburgh.

George Chrystal 's father, William Chrystal, was first a grain merchant, later a landowner and farmer. His mother, Margaret Burr, was a daughter of James Burr of Mains of Glaik, Aberdeenshire. The family stayed at Mill of Kingoodie, and Chrystal received his early education at the parish school of Old Meldrum, two miles from his home. As a child he was bright intellectually but suffered from lameness, which he afterwards outgrew, but which prevented him from joining in physical games. The family moved to Aberdeen shortly before 1863, the year Chrystal entered Aberdeen Grammar School. In 1866 he was awarded the Williamson Scholarship as the best pupil in the third class and, in his fourth and final class in the Grammar school he won the Silver Medal. In the same year, 1867, entered Aberdeen University. In 1867 Chrystal attended Aberdeen University, graduating (1871) in mathematics and physics. He obtained a scholarship to Cambridge and went to Peterhouse in 1872. While an undergraduate at Cambridge he was influenced by Adams Stokes and Maxwell . He graduated in 1875 with Stokes as one of his examiners and became a lecturer at Corpus Christi College in Cambridge. He was bracketed first with Burnside in the final examination. Chrystal was considered the most widely read among the young mathematicians. Chrystal worked with Maxwell on the experimental verification of Ohm 's Law in the newly opened Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge.

Professor George Chrystal 's close connection with the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) began with his appointment to the chair of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh and continued throughout the rest of his life. He was asked to address the Society in 1879, the year of his appointment to Edinburgh, then he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh at its meeting on Monday, 2 nd February 1880. In November of that year he was elected to the Council of the Society for the first of three terms of office: 1880-3; 1884-7; and 1895-1901. On the death of Professor Tait in 1901, Chrystal succeeded him as General Secretary of the RSE. He showed great loyalty to the Society and most of his original contributions to science appear in its publications. The most important achievement of Chrystal 's time as General Secretary was to acquire for the RSE a permanent site for its offices and library at 22-24 George Street, Edinburgh, accommodation it still occupies today although it has recently acquired the adjacent property in addition. The RSE had occupied for eighty years the building in Princess Street known as the Royal Institution, the west wing of which had been planned for the RSE when the building was erected. The RSE had been one of the bodies to propose this building in 1821 and, since the completion of the building, had shared it with the Society of Antiquaries and the Royal Institution for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts. For those familiar with Edinburgh today and interested in identifying the Royal Institution, we should say that it has been named the Royal Scottish Academy since 1911.
