He said that the Chinese government fully supports the holding of the International Conference of Mathematicians (ICM) in Beijing in 2002, and will use this opportunity to push forward China's mathematics study and personnel training. Chern outlined for Jiang the present conditions of international mathematics study and preparations for the ICM to be held in Beijing.

LMS AT ICM 2002 - BEIJING The Society's meeting at Beijing was followed by a reception. The members and guests present included Shiing-Shen Chern (honorary member and honorary President of the International Congress), David Mumford (honorary member), Jacob Palis (retiring President of the IMU), John Ball (former LMS President and incoming President of IMU), Jhi-Ming Ma (organiser of the Congress), Martin Taylor (former LMS President), Ian Sloan (organiser of ICIAM 2003), Jose Luis Fernandez, Carlos Andradas and Carlos Cascuberta (organising the next ICM in Madrid, in 2006), and representatives of most Societies with which we have reciprocal arrangements. The reception was greatly enjoyed: it measured up to the excellent standards set by our Chinese hosts at the opening banquet in the Great Hall of the People and at the memorable Congress party. The Society was represented at the Congress by having an exhibition stand, where participants learnt about the Society’s activities and publications. RECORDS OF PROCEEDINGS AT MEETINGS ORDINARY MEETING held on Friday 23 August 2002 at the Continental Grand Hotel, Beijing, on the occasion of the International Congress of Mathematicians. ³Â Ê¡ Éí Shiing Shen Chern ס Õ¬£º 8336 Kent Court E1 Cerrito, CA 94530 U.S.A Professor Shiing-Shen Chern Professor S S Chen is regarded as the greatest geometer of his generation. For six decades, he has been a leader in the field of differential geometry. Born in October 1911 in China, he obtained his BSc from Nankai University in 1930, MSc from Tsinghua University in 1934 and PhD from the University of Hamburg in 1936. He has worked in Paris and at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, Academia Sinica of China and Chicago University. In 1981, he proposed the establishment of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI), and became its first director until 1984. MSRI quickly became a highly successful institute and many credit Chern as a major factor. During his long career, Chern has been awarded numerous honorary degrees and prizes. He was elected to the US National Academy of Science in 1961, and received the National Medal of Sciences in 1975 and the Wolf Prize in 1983. He is also a foreign member of many societies, including the Royal Society of London, Academie dei Lincei, the French Academy of Sciences and Academia Sinica of China. Chern has been invited three times to address at the International Congress of Mathematicians. The Congress is held every four years and it is already unusual for a mathematician to be invited twice to give a plenary hour address.

The foremost of them is Professor Sir Karl Popper. I started corresponding with him in 1989 when he was already eighty-eight years old. Wanting to understand Lao Tzu in depth, I had inadvertently developed the urge to re-read his Open Society and Its Enemies . I felt that there were many agreements between Lao Tzu and Popper, yet Popper has successfully analyzed these tenets in more convincing modern terms. Later, wanting to understand him more precisely, I further extended my reading to his other book The Logic of Scientific Discovery ,(orig. Logik der Forschung ) which has laid the foundation for Open Society . Through it I realized why and how his claims are so solidly grounded. I have also gained from it some insight of the methodology of his analysis. Popper's own translation of Plato's original work in Open Society, according to Bertrand Russell "A work of first-class importance attack on Plato, while unorthodox, is in my opinion, totally justified." Other British Platonic scholars, including adversaries, also can not find fault in his translation. Popper's other monumental book Conjectures and Refutations: The Growth of Scientific Knowledge especially expounds the tenet that our knowledge is not immutable. In the book he successfully proves that either more evidences or new thinking mode will impel us to eke out new and better theories about us and cosmos. Popper has also laid out guidelines how to determine the superior acceptability of one theory over another.
